Tension in Jammalamadugu after TDP men pelt stones at cops

Tension prevailed in Jammalamadugu town of the district today after Telugu Desam Party (TDP) activists pelted stones at the police after they were stopped near the municipal office.

The police initially baton charged the stonepelting mob and later fired teargas shells to disperse them, a police officer said, adding that the situation continued to be tense, though it was under control.

More trains to Katra: Modi

Inaugurating the rail link to Katra, the base of Vaishno Devi shrine, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said more trains would be introduced from places such as New Delhi, Howrah Ahmedabad, Mumbai and Bangalore to the pilgrim town.

“I am also happy to announce that 3 pairs of train services currently between Jammu to Udhampur will be extended to Katra.

“The Railway has also planned to run 3 pairs of Express trains from New Delhi, Kalka, Ahmedabad, Mumbai and Bangalore,” he said in his address.

TDP, TRS triumphant in AP and Telangana in MPP elections

The ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) today registered significant victories in the Mandal Praja Parishad (MPP) elections in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana respectively.

TDP and TRS, which won the assembly polls in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana respectively in May, bagged substantial number of MPPs in the indirect polls (voted by Mandal Parishad Territorial Constiteuncy), according to information reaching here from the districts.

Nirmala Sitharaman’s husband made AP Communications Advisor

Andhra Pradesh government issued an order today, appointing Parakala Prabhakar as its Advisor (Communications), giving him the rank of a cabinet minister.

Prabhakar is the husband of Union Minister of State for Commerce Nirmala Sitharaman.

Previously, he was in the Congress and the BJP, after which he joined the Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) floated by Telugu movie actor Chiranjeevi.

He quit the PRP ahead of the 2009 elections after differences with Chiranjeevi and his brother-in-law Allu Aravind.

TV star,84, jailed for sex assaults in Britain

An 84-year-old Britain-based entertainer and TV presenter was jailed for five years and nine months after being found guilty of indecently assaulting four girls over nearly 20 years.

Rolf Harris, who is an Australian, was found guilty of 12 assaults, including seven against his daughter’s childhood friend.

The victims included an eight-year-old autograph hunter and the 13-year-old friend of his daughter, the Guardian reported Friday.

Ghaziabad police arrest criminal from hospital

The Ghaziabad police Friday took into custody a criminal who was undergoing treatment in a hospital.

Meerut Range Deputy Inspector General (DIG) K. Satyanarayana said Amit alias Saddam of Baghpat, carrying a reward of Rs.1 lakh on his head, was undergoing treatment for bullet injuries at the Yashoda Hospital in Ghaziabad.

Following an intelligence tip off, a team of Ghaziabad police, comprising Indirapuram inspector Rashid Ali and personnel from the Crime Branch, contacted the hospital administration.

First, was the return of Ayatollah Khomeini to Tehran and the Iranian occupation of the US embassy, a siege which lasted 444 days. The siege began Nov 4.

The Iranian revolution coincided almost exactly with the siege of the Grand Mosque in Mecca Nov 20, 1979. Armed Wahabis charged with the missionary zeal of the Ikhwan ul Muslimeen or a virulent Muslim Brotherhood opposed to the Saudi monarchy occupied the mosque.

Teenager kills mother over affair, burns her body

Upset over his mother’s relations with a man, a teenaged boy in this Punjab city allegedly hacked her to death and later set her body on fire, police said Friday.

The boy, aged 16, used a sharp-edged weapon to commit the crime early Friday at their house near Majithia Road and brought petrol to set her body on fire. He was apprehended by police from the house later.

“He did not run away after committing the crime. We took him into custody from the same house,” a Punjab Police official said.

IWPC demands code of conduct for politicians

Indian Women Press Corps (IWPC) Friday expressed shock at trivialisation of rape and demanded a strong code of conduct for political representatives.

“As an organisation comprising women journalists where professional requirements demand interacting with political representatives, such statements do not inspire confidence,” said a statement from IWPC.

The reaction comes after Trinamool Congress MP Tapas Paul stirred up a controversy when he was caught on a video threatening to gun down his Marxist rivals and “unleash his boys for raping” their women.

President expresses relief over Indian nurses reaching secure area

President Pranab Mukherjee Friday expressed relief and happiness over the news that 46 Indian nurses have reached a secure area in Iraq, on their way back to the country.

“I am happy and relieved that 46 nurses from Tikrit have reached a secure area in Iraq. I look forward to their early and safe return to India,” he said according to an official statement.

All 46 Indian women nurses seized by Sunni insurgents in Iraq were freed Friday after intense diplomatic efforts, and were set to return to Kerala Saturday morning.

Take action against Bhagana rape accused: Kejriwal to Sonia

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national chief Arvind Kejriwal today wrote a letter to Congress leader Sonia Gandhi asking her to direct the Haryana Government to take action against the accused in Bhagana rape case.

In his two page-letter, Kejriwal said that on March 23 this year, four Dalit women were allegedly abducted and gang-raped by some persons for two days, adding that no action, however, has been taken against these accused by the state government.

Wanchoo quits as Goa governor

Hours after being questioned by CBI officials in connection with the AgustaWestland VVIP chopper scam, Goa Governor B.V. Wanchoo resigned from the post Friday evening, an official said.

Wanchoo faxed his resignation to President Pranab Mukherjee, the official said.

While the Raj Bhavan did issue a statement about the questioning of Wanchoo by CBI officials, no mention of the resignation was made in the statement.

The Delhi High Court Friday directed the city government to provide food and medical facilities to homeless pregnant and lactating women residing at shelter homes here.

Justice Manmohan, clarifying his earlier order, directed the Delhi government to ensure hygienic living conditions, continue to provide three meals a day, and provide a room for women’s health checkups for pregnant and lactating women and “not other women”.

Avni Gupta, who has now taken admission in Miranda House, told IANS: “The second cut-off is still high. I wanted to study economics and English honours course, but I don’t think I will be able to qualify. So, I have now enrolled for a BA (Pass) programme.”

Neeraj Parihar who is seeking admission in Motilal Nehru College said he will be happy to get admitted in any course in DU.

Ghana doors shut for Boateng: Coach

Ghana football coach James Kwesi Appiah has decided not to recall Kevin-Prince Boateng to the national side after the Schalke 04 midfielder clashed with him before being expelled during the FIFA World Cup.

Appiah stressed that from now on he will call only patriotic disciplined players who are ready to die for the country, reports EFE.

He said that Boateng is no longer in the plans for the Black Stars. The midfielder was sent back from the World Cup camp after a brawl with Appiah.

“I believe in discipline and I will not allow anything to affect the team,” said Appiah.

NHRC ensures Rs.1.60 lakh payout for mid-day meal poisoning victims in MP

In two cases of mid-day meal poisoning, the National Human Rights Commission’s (NHRC) persistence resulted in a payment of a sum of Rs.1.60 lakh as monetary relief to three victims by the Government of Madhya Pradesh and ten by the Government of NCT of Delhi.

The amount included Rs.60 thousand for three girl students of a Secondary School in Village Mathdevai of District Siwani, Madhya Pradesh and Rs.1 lakh to ten girl students of Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya, Sector-20, Rohini, Delhi.

Pakistan urged to axe counter-terrorism bill

Pakistan’s government should withdraw a counter-terrorism bill which threatens basic rights and freedoms in violation of international legal obligations, Human Rights Watch said Friday.

On Wednesday, the National Assembly passed the Protection of Pakistan Bill to replace the Protection of Pakistan Ordinance, which the Senate refused to approve in April over concerns about its potential to violate human rights.

The Senate approved the new bill July 1 and President Mamnoon Hussain is expected to sign it into law within days.

Delhi Police awaiting final autopsy report in Pushkar’s death

Delhi Police is waiting for the final autopsy report from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) before proceeding in the investigation of the mysterious death of Sunanda Pushkar, wife of the former union minister Shashi Tharoor.

According to police sources, a Delhi Police team which was formed after the mysterious death of Pushkar Jan 17 was still waiting for the final autopsy report from the AIIMS. Pushkar was found dead in south Delhi’s Leela hotel.

Two people arrested for murdering MBA student

Two people have been arrested for murdering an MBA student whose body was found in a car here, police said Friday.

“Satish, 23 and Virendra, 25 stabbed Daksh, 20, to death and escaped from the scene. They were arrested from south Delhi,” said a police officer.

The body of Daksh, with injury marks on the head and the body, was found in a Maruti Ritz car bearing Haryana number.

The car was found parked near the Sultanpur Metro station in south Delhi Thursday evening.

Police said the assailants came to attack Daksh’s friend Mukesh following a personal grudge.

French teacher stabbed to death by student’s mother

A 34-year-old teacher in France was stabbed to death Friday by one of her students’ mother while all pupils were present in the classroom, police said.

The incident took place at the Edouard Herriot primary school in Albi, southern France, in the morning, BBC reported. Police said the suspect was immediately detained.

French President Francois Hollande, who sent education minister to the school to lead the government’s response, in a statement said: “All state services will be mobilised to take care of these children and the staff who witnessed this awful tragedy.”

46 nurses stranded in Iraq now free, to return tomorrow: MEA

Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin on Friday said that the 46 nurses who were stranded in Iraq and moved to another location against their will yesterday, are now free.

“Indian nurses, who were yesterday moved against their will, are now free. They are in touch with our officials in Erbil, and the process underway for their return to India. Even as we speak, an Air India has taken off and will land late tonight in Erbil. From Erbil, it will first fly to Kochi, drop the nurses, following which, it might come to Delhi, if required,” said Akbaruddin.

Pietersen, who was at Lord’s today to prepare to play for a Rest of the World side against the MCC, tweeted: “My space reserved in the Lord’s dressing room. Clothes ready! So excited about tomorrow.”
