Take action against Bhagana rape accused: Arvind Kejriwal to Sonia

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national chief Arvind Kejriwal on Friday wrote a letter to Congress leader Sonia Gandhi asking her to direct the Haryana Government to take action against the accused in Bhagana rape case.

In his two page-letter, Kejriwal said that on March 23 this year, four Dalit women were allegedly abducted and gang-raped by some persons for two days, adding that no action, however, has been taken against these accused by the state government.

Hyderabad police ban consumption of liquor in public places

Following reports of drunkards creating nuisance in several areas of the city, causing harassment especially to women and children, police have prohibited consumption of liquor in public places for a week.

Drunkards were reportedly indulging in “abrasive unruly and indecent behaviour towards law abiding citizens especially women and children, in particular endangering their modesty and safety”, Police Commissioner M Mahendar Reddy said in a release.

Chandy to receive Indian nurses

An Air India flight with 46 nurses freed by Sunni insurgents in Iraq is set to arrive here Saturday noon, officials said.

Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy will receive the nurses at the airport, where a special immigration desk has been set up.

The Air India flight took off earlier from Erbil, the capital of Kurdistan, after the nurses were freed by the insurgents following intense Indian diplomatic efforts.

The plane will later go to New Delhi with some 70 other Indians, who were stranded in Iraq.

Maldives court denies deportation of Pakistani criminals

A Maldives court has denied ordering the deportation of two Pakistanis caught by police in the biggest drug bust in the history of the country, a statement said Friday.

Four Maldivians, three Bangladeshis, and 11 Pakistanis were taken into custody March 10 with 24 kg of heroin, which local media quoted police as saying was “the largest amount of drugs seized in a police operation conducted in the Maldives,” Xinhua reported.

The drugs were transported in a vessel named ‘Hormooz’ registered in Iran, according to the Maldives police.

CGHS pensioners staged dharna

All Pensioners and Retired Persons’ Association leaders told that due to negligence of CGHS Doctors they are not getting proper medicines in CGHS dispensaries. He further told that although computers have been installed to provide better facilities to pensioners but due to power cut these computers are not working, due to which patients are going back home without getting medicines. SC moved seeking CBI probe against Tapas Pal’s remarks

A PIL was today filed in the Supreme Court seeking a CBI investigation into the allegedly inflammatory remarks made by actor-cum-Trinamool Congress MP Tapas Pal.

The PIL was filed by advocate Bijayan Ghosh seeking a probe by CBI as he alleged that the West Bengal Police were acting in a partisan manner in the matter.

The advocate said that since the state government was not taking any action and was dealing with the issue in a “partisan” manner and if no action is taken, it will encourage other leaders to indulge in such activities.

Married woman gangraped in Barasat

A 35-year-old married woman has been allegedly gangraped in West Bengal’s 24 North Paraganas district, a senior police official said here today.

The woman was kidnapped by four persons in a vehicle on June 26 and allegedly gangraped by them at Garapotha area, according to additional superintendent of police Bhaskar Mukherjee.

The accused left the victim in an unconscious state and fled after commiting the crim, he said.

The police started investigating the matter after the victim lodged an FIR with the Bonga police station yesterday, he said.

HC dismisses woman’s charge of sexual assault by police

The Madras High Court today dismissed a petition by the daughter of a Malaysian fugitive wanted by the Interpol alleging sexual assault by police personnel, including an IPS officer, after her father was arrested, and ordered her to pay a cost of Rs 10,000.

Justice C T Selvam dismissed the petition by Shyamala after recording the affidavit by DGP K Ramanujam on the criminal antecedents of her step-father Karunairaj alias Michael Soosai, who had been living in the country since 2003 after illegally entering it along with her.

Air India flight from Iraq to reach Mumbai at 9.30 am

The special Air India flight carrying 46 Indian nurses set free by Sunni militants ISIS in strife-torn Iraq and 137 others would first land in Mumbai and reach here around noon today, a top airport official said.

The flight carrying 183 Indian nationals from Erbil was expected to reach Mumbai around 9.30 am and after disembarkment of some passengers would arrive here around 11.55 am, Cochin International Airport Director A K C Nair told PTI this morning.

One killed in Syrian raid on Lebanon border town

A Syrian was killed and five injured when the Syrian air force raided the outskirts of Lebanon’s eastern Bekaa border town of Arsal, state media said here.

The jets targeted militants in Wadi al-Zumrani, Wadi Ata and Wadi al-Ajram on the outskirts of Arsal and about seven kilometres deep into Lebanese territory, reported Xinhua citing Lebanon’s National News Agency.

Arsal, near the border with Syria, is a Sunni town where residents support the rebels fighting against the regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad, and hosts tens of thousands of Syrian refugees.

Hawala racket busted in Patna, three held

The Patna police busted a hawala racket Friday after arresting three people, police said.

A police team arrested three people near Gandhi Maidan here and recovered Rs.16 lakh in cash and 36 ATM cards from their possession, Patna Senior Superintendent of Police Manu Maharaj said.

“We have been interrogating the three arrested hawala agents and hope to expose a bigger nexus spread across the country and abroad,” he said.

Maharaj said: “Police will try to trace their outside links and the kingpin behind it.”

Talking to IANS here, Health and Medical Education Minister Taj Mohiuddin said: “The hydropower project inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has no licence to operate and is, therefore, illegal.”

Arunachal lacks basic facilities in border areas: Rijiju

Union Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju Friday said his home state Arunachal Pradesh lacks basic facilities in border areas and there was need to make inhabitants stay there by improving amenities.

Rijiju, who is an MP from Arunachal West, interacted with Chief Minister Nabam Tuki and other senior state and defence officials on his first visit to the state since taking charge as minister, officials said.

He reviewed infrastructure development programmes in border areas and called for steps to improve telecom connectivity in the state.

12 soldiers killed in suicide attack in Iraq

A suicide car bomber killed at least 12 Iraqi soldiers and wounded some 30 others in Salahudin province Friday, police said.

The attack occurred near Dijla town south of the provincial capital city of Tikrit, some 170 km north of Baghdad, when a suicide bomber drove his explosive-laden car near the soldiers, Xinhua quoted a police officers as saying on condition of anonymity.

The area near Dijla town, also named Mkesheifah, is a battlefield zone as the Iraqi security forces failed several days ago to cross it on their way to retake control of Tikrit from Sunni militant groups.
