Ten children taken unwell in Goa school

Ten school children Saturday complained of giddiness during a laboratory experiment in Goa’s Vasco town and were rushed to a hospital, a school spokesperson said.

They were later discharged after preliminary examination at the hospital in Chicalim village.

Students from St. Andrew’s school in Vasco, a port town located 35 km from here, complained of giddiness after inhaling some gases in the laboratory while conducting experiments, said the school spokesperson.

“Grass-in-the-ear” new fad amongst ‘copycat’ chimps

A new study has revealed that Chimpanzees are copycats and, in the process, they form new traditions that are often particular to only one specific group of these primates, as “grass-in-the-ear” has become a new trend.

According to the researchers, a female chimp named Julie repeatedly put a stiff, strawlike blade of grass for no apparent reason in one or both of her ears and left it there even when she was grooming, playing or resting, after which other chimpanzees also followed suit.

A new study has revealed that positive portrayal of unhealthy food habits by TV characters lead to set bad example for kids in real life.

The researchers established that statutory legislation to curb children’s exposure to high sugar and fat in food/drink in TV adverts was introduced in the UK in 2007, and similar regulations have recently come on stream in Ireland, however these weren’t applied to programme content.

Boy gets locked inside car; dies of suffocation

A two-and-a-half year old boy died, allegedly due to suffocation after he accidentally locked himself in a car in busy New Market area here, a police official said on Saturday.

The incident took place yesterday when the kid identified as Atishay Jain, son of a local garment trader was playing in the shop and later took the keys of a car quietly and went inside the vehicle to play, his grandfather Kamal Jain told reporters.

Soon after the child entered inside, the car got locked and the windows remained closed causing suffocation, a sub inspector said.

Six persons injured in clash in Meerut

At least six persons were injured in a clash between two parties belonging to different communities over a minor dispute here, police said on Saturday.

The incident took place last night when two youths belonging to different communities had an argument over a mere sum of hundred rupees, which one person owed to another, they said.

The argument later worsened as people from the two parties took to the streets and indulged in stone-pelting which left at least 6 persons injured, SSP Omkar Singh said.

The injured have been admitted to a hospital.

Official sentenced for accepting bribe in TN

The Special Court for Prevention of Corruption has convicted a Deputy Director of Fire and Rescue services in a bribery case and sentenced him for three and a half years imprisonment, besides slapping a fine of Rs 11,000.

His assistant Durairaj was also sentenced to one year in the same case.

The case was that Deputy director of Fire Service Noorudin, who was suspended from service pending investigation before his retirement, had demanded a bribe of Rs 5000 from fireman Nagarajan for effecting transfer from Kallikudi Fire service station to Sivakasi on September 29, 2003.

Nurses freed from Iraq return home, families overjoyed

Forty-six nurses, who were held captive by ISIS militants in Iraq, on Saturday returned home by a special Air India flight to a happy reunion with their families here, bringing to an end their about month-long ordeal.

The special aircraft, which also had on board about 137 others, touched down the tarmac at the Kochi International Airport at 11.57am, a senior airport official said.

Six Taliban militants killed in Afghanistan

Six Taliban militants were killed and 10 others sustained injuries in a clash with security forces in Jarm district of Badakhshan province 315 km northeast of Kabul, a government spokesman said Saturday.

“A group of armed Taliban rebels attacked police checkpoints outside Jarm city Friday night and police returned the fire killing six militants on the spot and injuring 10 others,” Ahmad Naved Frutan, spokesman of the provincial government, told Xinhua.

There were no casualties among the security personnel, he added.

Curfew imposed in MP town after clash; 7 injured, 33 held

Curfew was last night imposed in this town in Madhya Pradesh after a clash between members of two communities which left seven persons injured, three of them with gunshot wounds, and saw a number of shops and vehicles being torched, police said on Saturday.

Police lathi-charged the rioters and lobbed teargas shells before being forced to fire in the air as the situation got out of control, Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP), Mukesh Vaishya, told reporters.

Indian Mujahideen co-founder Yasin Bhatkal, arrested in connection with the 2011 Mumbai triple blast case, told the Mumbai police that he feels “proud of himself” for carrying out the blasts.

“Whatever I have done, I feel proud of myself,” Bhatkal said in his confessional statement, recorded by the Mumbai police.

The Maharashtra control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA), under which Bhatkal is charged with, authorises the DCP-level officer to record the confessional statement of the accused.

70 teachers warned after being found absent from school in Muzaffarnagar

70 teachers of government-run primary schools were found absent from duty during checking by a team of the education department in the district, an official said today.

“During checking in different government-run primary schools yesterday, 70 teachers were found absent from duty. One day’s salary would be deducted of the absentee teachers,” District Education offical K K Singh told reporters here.

The teachers have been warned and strict action would be taken against them if they found absent again, he said. PTI

Karnataka mulling bill to allow panchayats levy tax on services

Karnataka Government is planning to introduce a bill which will give powers to gram panchayats to levy taxes on services provided by commercial establishments, including airports, falling under their jurisdiction to rev up revenue collection.

The government move was prompted by the dwindling gram panchayat revenues to take up developmental works in villages, Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister H K Patil said in the state Assembly.

Japanese car maker Nissan on Thursday rolled out a new model here of its mid-size sedan Sunny, both in petrol and diesel variants priced between Rs 7.29 and 10.22 lakh (ex-showroom Mumbai).
Nissan had launched Sunny for the first time in the Indian market in 2011.

“India is a key strategic growth market for Nissan. We continue to monitor its evolution extremely closely to ensure our expanding product portfolio fits regional needs. Oil tankers destroyed as rockets hit Kabul

Several oil tankers caught fire and were reduced to ashes as three rockets fired by militants slammed into a parking lot in the western part of Afghanistan’s capital Kabul, drivers at the site said.

“It was 11 p.m. Friday night when three rockets hit the parking lot in Arghandi area on the outskirts of Kabul city burning several oil tankers,” Tawab Khan, a driver, told Xinhua at the site of the incident.

“Two of my own oil tankers have burned to ashes and I have lost whatever I had in my life,” Khan added.

Two children killed as wall collapses in Muzaffarnagar

Two children were killed and as many injured when the wall of a house collapsed at Mujhera village under Miranpur police station in Muzaffarnagar district, police said.

The incident took place on Friday evening when the children were playing near the house, they said.

Karin (5) and Farin (3) were killed on the spot while the injured were shifted to a nearby hospital, they said.
