Older women’s eggs ‘just as good’?

An old hypothesis that claims that as a woman ages, the eggs she will produce will have more faulty chromosomes – leading to miscarriages and developmental abnormalities – does not hold much water, says a new research.

The production-line hypothesis stated that the first eggs produced in a female’s foetal stage tend to have better connections or “crossovers” between chromosomes.

Over 150 Hindu inmates keep Roza with 2,300 Muslims at Tihar

Setting an example of rare communal harmony, more than 150 Hindu inmates of Tihar Jail here are keeping roza, the dawn-to-dusk fast during Ramzan, along with over 2,300 Muslim inmates.

The holy month of Ramazan commenced on June 29 this year.

Tihar Jail authorities said the Hindu inmates started keeping Rozas along with the Muslim inmates from the very first day and have said they will continue the month-long fasting to its completion.

Husband commits suicide at Chatrinaka following row with wife

A man committed suicide after having row with his wife. The incident occurred under Chatrinaka police station limits where 30-year-old Malesh resorted to the extreme step.

Malesh, a labour was the resident of Gaulipura he hanged himself to death after having a row with his wife. Investigations are underway.

Shinde named rape victims due to ‘heavy work load’: MHA

Mentioning the names of minor rape victims of Bhandara in Parliament by then Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde resulted from “heavy work load” of the ministry officials who prepared his statement and was not “unlawful”, the Home Ministry has concluded in its enquiry.

The explanation given by the Ministry officials did not go well with Shinde who had to face embarrassment in the Rajya Sabha on March 1, 2013 when he named the victims of the Bhandara rape incident. The remarks had to be expunged at the intervention of then leader of the Opposition Arun Jaitley.

Indian man jailed for biting compatriot’s ear in New Zealand

A 28-year-old Indian-origin man was sentenced to two years and three months in prison in New Zealand for biting off an ear of his former partner’s boyfriend.

Anish Rao was handed down the prison term by the Auckland district court yesterday for biting off the top of the left ear of Ritesh Ram, who was in a relationship with Rao’s former lover Vikashni Ashari.

Rao illegally entered into Ram’s property last year and smashed open a door to move into the house in Auckland’s suburb where Ram and his partner Ashari were sleeping.

Elderly man arrested for raping minor maid

A 77-year-old businessman was arrested for raping a minor maid in his home here, police said Sunday.

Mahendra Sehgal was arrested from his house at Sabzi Mandi area in north Delhi Saturday night, police said.

The victim told police that Sehgal forced her to watch video clips of blue films in his phone and has been raping her for a few months.

On Saturday afternoon, the victim told a neighbour and the police were informed.IANS

Taxpayers to get quick SMS, email updates on refunds, filing

The Income-Tax department will soon start updating taxpayers about the status of their I-T refunds and processing of certain tax statements by sending real-time SMSes and emails, on similar lines as that of credit card and bank transactions at present.

The department’s ‘Systems’ wing has now deployed a robust software and hardware platform that would host and streamline the personal email IDs and mobile numbers of an individual or any other entity who files an I-T return, electronically or manually.

Jayalalithaa constitutes SIT to probe Chennai building collapse

Close on the heels of ordering a judicial probe into the Porur building crash which claimed 61 lives, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa today announced the setting up of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the matter.

“Under the supervision of the Commissioner of Police, a SIT will be set up comprising experts in engineering and architecture. The team will be headed by a Joint Commissioner of Police,” she said in a statement here.

Strauss apologises for making offensive remark about KP during live broadcast

Former England captain Andrew Strauss has apologised for making an offensive remark about sacked batsman Kevin Pietersen during a live broadcast.

Strauss was commentating for Sky Sports on the MCC versus Rest of the World match at Lord’s when he made the offensive remark about Pietersen.

Sky Sports had been on a break but viewers of Fox Sports in Australia, who take the channel’s commentary, heard the exchange between Strauss and Nick Knight.

Strauss said that he apologises unreservedly, particularly to Pietersen, adding that he is mortified and profusely sorry, the BBC reported.

Gold price remains flat; silver gains

Gold continued to trade lacklustre for the second straight session and ended almost flat at the bullion market in Mumbai due to weak demand from stockists as well as subdued local buying interest.

Silver, on the other hand, maintained its momentum owing to sustained demand from jewellery and coin makers amid good industrial support.

Mutual funds buy shares worth Rs 3,300 cr in June

Improved market sentiments helped mutual funds pick up shares to the tune of over Rs 3,300 crore in June, making it the second consecutive monthly inflow.

Besides, they pumped in a staggering Rs 68,000 crore in the debt market during the period.

The inflows in equities during June followed a net investment of about Rs 105 crore in the preceding month.

Prior to that, fund houses have been net sellers in the equity market since September last year, while they were net buyers of shares to the tune of Rs 1,607 crore in August.

VVIP chopper deal: ED to send judicial requests to over 6 countries

Widening its probe into the money laundering probe in the Rs 3,600 crore VVIP chopper deal, the Enforcement Directorate will send judicial requests to about six countries seeking information on bank accounts and transactions to detect the trail of alleged kickbacks money.

The agency, which filed a criminal case two days ago under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) in the deal which was cancelled last year by the Government, has detected that over 170 ‘fake firms” were floated to route the alleged illegal funds between Indian and foreign firms.

11 dead as compound wall collapses in Tiruvallur district

At least 11 construction workers were today killed after a newly built compound wall adjacent to their huts collapsed near Uttarapalayam in Tiruvallur district in Tamnil Nadu.

A 19-year-old youth Nagaraj was rescued from debris, police said.

All the labourers, said to be from Andhra Pradesh, were working in a private godown. Five fire tenders were pressed into service for rescue work.

The incident occurred after heavy rains lashed the area last night, police said.

Top-10 Sensex firms added Rs 68,518 cr in market valuation

In a strong market, the top-10 Sensex companies together added Rs 68,518 crore in market capitalisation last week, with ITC and HDFC Bank emerging as the biggest gainers.

The market valuation of FMCG major ITC jumped Rs 10,758.69 crore to Rs 2,65,140.69 crore.

Similarly, HDFC Bank’s m-cap surged Rs 10,565.07 crore to Rs 2,06,183.07 crore. ONGC saw its value climb Rs 9,283.13 crore to Rs 3,60,956.13 crore.

The m-cap of ICICI Bank zoomed Rs 9,139.94 crore to Rs 1,69,060.94 crore and Coal India’s market value advanced by Rs 7,517.34 crore to Rs 2,48,896.34 crore.

Revlon eyes 30% growth, Rs 250 crore sales this fiscal

Cosmetics firm Revlon is eyeing 30 percent growth in turnover at Rs 250 crore on the back of new product launches this financial year.

“We are targeting 30 percent growth and Rs 250 crore turnover this fiscal. We expect good growth from the new StreetWear Color Rich cosmetics targeted at young women,” Modi-Revlon Chairman and Chief Executive Umesh Modi said.

“Market is sluggish and we have to bring in new customers. This kind of growth (30 percent) is only possible if we tap areas which we did not tap earlier,” he added.
