Major ports will double capacity in five years: Gadkari

Union Shipping Minister Nitin Gadkari on Monday said India’s 12 major ports will double their cargo handling capacity to 1,600 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) in the next five years.

“India plans to double the ports’ capacity from the current 800 MT to 1,600 over the next five years,” Gadkari said in an official release.

Gadkari was speaking at a review meeting on the port sector attended by chiefs of all the 12 state-run major ports. Media was not invited for the meet or briefed afterwards.

Bus on way to RGIA catches fire; none hurt

A bus carrying some passengers to the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) at Shamshabad here caught fire in the early hours today.

The bus belonging to ‘Pushpak-Airport liner’ bus services operated by Road Transport Corporation (RTC), was on
its way to the airport from Secunderabad when it caught fire between 12.30 AM and 1 AM near Aaramghar Crossroads,
Rajendranagar Police Station Inspector CH Kushalkar told PTI.

Toll in Medak bus-train collision climbs to 18

The toll in the school bus-train collision at an unmanned railway crossing in Telangana’s Medak district today rose to 18 after a 11-year-old girl succumbed to her injuries at a private hospital here, even as the condition of four other students remained critical.

Vaishnavi, who was in “very very critical condition” after receiving injuries in the mishap, was declared dead at
5.28 AM, a release from Yashoda Hospitals said.

Vaishnavi was a resident of Islampur of Toopran mandal of Medak district.

Smartphone catches fire under US girl’s pillow

In a bizarre accident, a 13-year-old girl found her Samsung Galaxy S4 burnt and melted under her pillow.

The north Texas girl kept the phone on charge and wedged her charging phone under her pillow.

Hours later, alarmed by a burning smell, she woke up and found her phone fried and pillow scorched, FOX 4 reported.

According to the girl’s father, he “suspects that the phone overheated, causing the battery to swell and start a fire”.

In a reply, Samsung officials claimed the second-hand battery in the girl’s Galaxy phone could have been part of the problem.

Minor girl gang raped at gunpoint in Delhi

A teenaged girl was allegedly gang raped at gunpoint by five people known to her in a west Delhi house, police said Tuesday.

The victim, a resident of Uttam Nagar and a student of class X, was taken to a house in west Delhi a week ago by the accused — all of whom are known to her — when she was going to school and raped in turns, police said.

Of the five accused, three are minors.

In her complaint, the victim told the police that one of the accused was carrying a pistol and threatened her with dire consequences if she disclosed the incident to anyone.

Curfew relaxed in Saharanpur, devouts offer Eid prayers

Devouts today offered Eid prayers in Saharanpur with district authorities relaxing curfew in the violence-hit city where security forces kept a close watch on trouble-mongers.

Curfew was being relaxed in two stages from 7 AM to 11 AM in the old town areas and from 3 PM to 7 PM in the new city, Saharanpur District Magistrate Sandhya Tiwari said.

12 pilgrims killed

At least 12 pilgrims, five of them women, were killed and 22 others injured when a speeding container ran over them on the New Delhi-Kolkata NH 2 in Bihar’s Aurangabad district early today.

The heavy vehicle lost control and ran over the ‘kanwarias’ (devotees of Lord Shiva) sleeping on the roadside, Superintendent of Police Upendra Kumar Sharma said.

After running over the sleeping Kawarias, it hit a parked bus in which some other kanwarias were taking rest, the SP said, adding 12 kanwarias were killed in the mishap.

Four coaches of Lalkuan Express derail in Lucknow

Four coaches of a train derailed late Monday here when a fighting bull and cow suddenly came on the railway tracks and hit engine of the moving Lal Kuan Express, officials said. But no passenger was injured.

The incident occurred near the Daliganj railway station in the state capital.

Railway officials rushed to the accident site and till early morning work was underway to bring the derailed coaches back on track and restore traffic on the section.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu today released a white paper on the irrigation sector to highlight the “follies” of the erstwhile Congress government.

Flanked by Irrigation Minister Devineni Umamaheswara Rao, Naidu released the white paper, fifth in the series brought out by the TDP-led government after it assumed office last month to highlight the “follies” of the Congress regime between 2004 and 2014.
