The Rajya Sabha was disrupted Wednesday as opposition members raised the issue of historic files being destroyed by the Home Ministry. The government, however, denied the charge.

Raising the issue during zero hour, the time fixed for raising issues of national importance, P. Rajeev of Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) said 1.5 Lakh historic files were destroyed in a hurry by the government.

Two people injured after bomb explodes in Imphal

Two persons were injured after two powerful bombs planted by suspected militants exploded in Imphal.

The bombs might have been planted to target security personnel, said police sources. However, the explosion did not cause any harm to them.

The two injured men were identified as Kiran Laishram (45) a mason, whose condition was critical, and S.M. Kennath.

VVIP chopper scam: CBI questions Andhra Governor E S L Narsimhan

After West Bengal Governor M.K. Narayanan and Goa Governor B.V. Wanchoo, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday questioned Andhra Pradesh Governor E S L Narasimhan in connection with Agusta Westland VVIP Chopper scam.
Narasimhan was the Intelligence Bureau (IB) chief when the deal was signed. He is said to be a part of the meeting where the technical specifications for the helicopters were tweaked so as to enable AgustaWestland to qualify for the bidding.

US pilot orders 50 pizzas for all passengers on delayed flight

Flight delays can make passengers grumpy but not when the pilot orders pizzas for them as a treat.

That is exactly what a Frontier Airlines pilot did, when the airline’s plane bound for the Mile High City, Colorado, from Washington was diverted after thunderstorms and lightning pummeled the Denver area.

Gerhard Bradner, the captain of the Airbus A320, ordered 50 pizzas — enough for the whole plane — when severe thunderstorms on Monday forced the plane to divert to southern Wyoming. He paid out of his own pocket for the pizzas.

HC reserves order on CBI probe into Vadra land deal

The Delhi High Court Wednesday reserved its order on a PIL seeking a CBI probe into the licences granted to several real estate developers in Haryana, including one allegedly associated with Congress chief Sonia Gandhi’s son-in-law Robert Vadra.

A division bench of Chief Justice G. Rohini and Justice R.S. Endlaw, after brief arguments in the case, said “We will consider this issue.”

Supreme court notice to Salman khan in Blackbuck hunting case

The Supreme court on Wednesday issued a notice to Bollywood actor Salman Khan on Rajasthan government’s plea challenging a high court decision which had stayed his conviction in a blackbuck hunting case.

A bench headed by Justice S J Mukhopadhaya asked Khan, who was sentenced to undergo five-year jail term by a trial court, to file his response within four weeks.

The state government approached the apex court against the order of Rajasthan high court which had, on November 12 last year, stayed his 2006 conviction in the case and paved way for him to apply for a British visa.

Cong uproar in RS over alleged leakage of Rail Budget

Congress today created uproar in Rajya Sabha over the alleged leakage of Rail Budget and forced two adjournments during Question Hour on the issue.

Raising the matter during Zero Hour, Congress members wanted to raise the issue but were disallowed by Deputy Chairman P J Kurien, who said the party’s privilege notice was still under consideration of Chairman Hamid Ansari and hence, he would not be able to allow any discussion on it.

Congress members including Madhusudan Mistry, Satyavrat Chaturvedi and V Hanumantha Rao wanted to mention the issue of alleged leakage of Rail budget.

CM performs ‘Ashadhi Ekadashi’ puja; prays for good monsoon

Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan today prayed for a drought-free state and good monsoon this year while performing the traditional puja of ‘Ashadhi Ekadashi’ here.

“I sought peace and prosperity in the state. Similarly, I prayed for a good monsoon so that the state remains drought free,” Chavan said after performing the puja of Lord Vitthal and Rukmini.

Chavan’s wife Satvasheela also participated in the ritual which began early this morning.

The Chief Minister said he got an opportunity to perform the rituals, as per the tradition which dates back to several years.

Man kills wife, buries body in field in Bihar

A man allegedly killed his wife and buried her body in an agricultural field in a village here before ploughing the ground to avoid suspicion.

The body of the woman, Pramila Devi, was found today with police suspecting it to be a case of dowry.

“She was married around a year ago to Lal Babu Ram of Dakshin Tola village. We suspect she was killed for dowry,” Saraiya Station House Officer (SHO) Upendra Kumar said.

Ram allegedly killed Pramila and then took her body to his field and buried her, police said, adding he also ploughed the ground so that people do not suspect anything amiss.

GDP growth to improve to 5.4-5.9 pc, concerns remain: Survey

Indian economy is likely to grow in the range of 5.4 to 5.9 per cent in 2014-15 overcoming the sub-5 per cent GDP growth of past two years, even as poor monsoon and disturbed external environment remain a cause for concern, says the Economic Survey.

“The growth slowdown in the last two years was broad based, affecting in particular the industry sector. Inflation too declined during this period, but continued to be above the comfort zone, owing primarily to the elevated level of food inflation”, said the Survey for 2013-14 tabled by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in Parliament today.

Minor raped in Jharkhand on panchayat’s diktat

A minor was raped in Jharkhand allegedly on the panchayat’s diktat after her brother was accused of molesting and trying to rape a woman, police said Wednesday.

The incident took place at Gulgulia Dhora village in Bokaro district, some 160 km from Ranchi.

Police said the girl was raped by a person whose wife was allegedly molested by the girl’s brother, following which the panchayat directed the man to rape her.

The girl’s brother allegedly molested the woman Sunday night and the issue was taken to the village panchayat Monday.

Samsung forecasts 25 per cent drop in profits for second quarter

Samsung Electronics has forecast a 25 per cent drop in profit for the second quarter due to a slowdown in the smartphone market and a strong Korean currency.

It expects to make an operating profit of 7.2 trillion Won (USD7.1 billion) in the April-to-June period, down from 9.5 trillion Won a year ago, reports the BBC.

A stronger Korean currency (rising 11 per cent against the dollar) has also hurt Samsung’s earnings during the period.

Its operating profit has now fallen for three straight quarters.

Victim turns hostile in Balwakheri rape case

A 23-year-old teacher, who had alleged that she was raped by a youth in Balwakheri village in the district, has turned hostile in court.

Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Sunder Lal recorded her statement Tuesday under Section 164 CRPC (recording of statements and confessions) here.

The victim turned hostile and said that she was not raped by the accused here.

Police had earlier said that the teacher was allegedly raped by a youth at Balwakheri village on Saturday last and the act was videographed by two of his associates and all of them blackmailed her.

General Electric has come up with a technological boon as their new microwave can count the calories in the food.

Microwave will utilize the three pieces of information, which are fat content, water content, and weight. From this microwave will provide with the calorie content in the food item, reported The Verge.

The glitch with the appliance is that it only works with blended food and the food needs to be uniform to get the actual reading, which makes it ideal for liquids. The researchers are still working on application on solid food.

A teenager was charged almost 180,000 pounds for a large margherita pizza by Domino’s.

The 19-year-old from Newport, Nathaniel Bolwell, had ordered a large margherita pizza worth 17.99 pounds, but he later realized that the American restaurant chain had overdrawn 179,000 pounds from his bank account, the Mirror reported.

The shocked teenager, who was paid back two days later, said that even the “poshest meal in the poshest restaurant” with all his friends and family wouldn’t have cost as much.
