US blacklists UAE company for helping Syrian regime

The US Treasury placed a United Arab Emirates company on its sanctions blacklist today for selling speciality oil products to the Syrian government.

Boosting the pressure on the regime of Bashar al-Assad, the Treasury at the same time named for sanctions two alleged front companies for Syria’s Scientific Studies and Research Centre (SSRC).

The United States says the SSRC is responsible for developing and producing non-conventional weapons and ballistic missiles for Assad’s forces.

GHMC chief threatens to invoke ESMA if staff goes on strike

GHMC Commissioner Somesh Kumar said that the strike call given by the Bhagyanagar Municipal GHMC Employees Union (BMS) was not proper at this juncture in view of the festivals and rainy season.

The Commissioner said that the demand for enhancement of the salaries was seriously being pursued with the State Government. He requested all the Unions to cooperate with the GHMC and not to create any inconvenience to the citizens of the city.

Celebration of Telugu culture in US is a big draw

Over 8,000 Telugus and other Indian-Americans attended a celebration of Telugu language, culture and cuisine at a just concluded biennial event hosted by the American Telugu Association (ATA) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The three day event over the weekend at the Pennsylvania Convention Centre showcased Telugu Culture with a mesmerising music concert, the re-enactment of Bonalu-Bathakamma festival, folk dances, and panel discussions on different subjects, according to the organisers.

British Indian girl’s death an ‘open conclusion’, says court

An inquest into the mysterious death of an eight-year-old British Indian girl has found it to be a case of “open conclusion”, a media report said Wednesday.

Gurkiren Loyal, a resident of Birmingham in Britain’s West Midlands, died after being treated at a local clinic in Indian Punjab state for a routine stomach ailment in April 2 last year, the Birmingham Mail reported.

Her parents, Santokh Singh Loyal and Amrit Kaur, claimed that the medic took her life after administering a mystery injection.

According to them, the little girl has been murdered so her organs could be harvested.

Bags at BJP headquarters trigger panic, claimed later

The discovery of three bags at the BJP headquarters here triggered panic Wednesday. A couple later came forward and claimed the bags.

“Three unclaimed bags were found at the BJP headquarters around 7.45 a.m. As soon as we got the information, a bomb disposal squad was sent,” Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Jatin Narwal told IANS.

“The bags were checked but no explosives were found,” he added.

Later, a couple from south Delhi who had come to the Bharatiya Janata Party head office to meet some leaders claimed the bags belonged to them.

Police submits interim report on Salem’s pic with ‘wife’

The Thane police today submitted an interim report about its inquiry into the photograph of gangster Abu Salem and his alleged wife, published by sections of media here.

“We have filed an interim report on the photograph that appeared recently in sections of media to a TADA court. An Additional Commissioner level officer had conducted the inquiry,” said CBI Special Prosecutor Deepak Salvi.

Salvi also sought four weeks’ time to further inquire into the matter.

Special TADA judge G A Sanap took the report (presented in a sealed cover) on record and granted additional time.

Kerala tobacco users spent Rs.545 crore on treatment

Keralites spent a whopping Rs.545 crore on treatment of tobacco-related diseases during 2011, according to a new study.

The study on “The Economic Burden of Tobacco-related Diseases-2011” was conducted by the Public Health Foundation of India with support from the union ministry of health and family welfare and the WHO Country Office for India.

In Kerala, 21.4 percent adults (15 years and above) use tobacco while 42 percent adults are exposed to second-hand smoke at home.

SC notice to Salman Khan in blackbuck hunting case

The Supreme Court Wednesday issued notice to Bollywood film star Salman Khan on a plea by the Rajasthan government challenging the stay on his conviction in a blackbuck hunting case.

The Rajasthan government moved the apex court challenging the Nov 12, 2013, decision of the high court staying the conviction of Salman Khan for the hunting.

Salman Khan’s sentence was stayed by the high court Aug 31, 2007.

Gangster with Rs.1 lakh bounty held in Delhi

A 28-year-old gangster, carrying a bounty of Rs.1 lakh on his head, has been arrested here over his involvement in 10 cases of murder and attempt to murder, police said Wednesday.

Ravi Bhardwaj alias Bunty, a resident of Alipur in north Delhi, was arrested Tuesday from the Meerut-Shamli crossing near Karnal in Haryana and was brought to Delhi.

A police official said that Bhardwaj was arrested for the first time by the Delhi Police Crime Branch May 18, 2013 in a case related to the Arms Act.

Four killed in Somalia presidential palace attack

Four people, including three militants, were killed in an overnight attack on the presidential palace in Somalia’s capital Mogadishu, government sources said Wednesday.

Somali Minister of Information Mustaf Sheikh Ali Duhulow said four militants tried to penetrate an office complex that houses various ministries but were quickly halted by Somali security forces and African Union peacekeepers.

The attackers carried out a car bomb explosion and opened fire during the assault, Xinhua reported. Islamist militants claimed responsibility for the attack.

Iran determined to reach n-accord, ‘but not at any cost’

Iran is determined to reach an agreement with world powers in the ongoing nuclear talks, “but not at any cost”, Iran’s foreign ministry spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham said Wednesday, explaining that Iran will not cross redlines over its nuclear rights.

In the talks underway, “there has been some progress, but it has been slow”, Afkham said, adding that “we hope the other party will make reasonable decisions by being realistic about Iran’s peaceful nuclear programme”.

Iran hoped the world powers would make difficult decisions which they were talking about, Xinhua reported citing Afkham.

10 held for prostitution in Gurgaon

Ten people, including five women, were arrested here for prostitution Wednesday, police said.

Five couples from Gurgaon and Delhi were arrested from a hotel on Old Railway Road, Deputy Commissioner of Oolice Sangeeta Rani told IANS. The men and women are from age group of 25 to 52 years.

The owner and manager of the hotel were booked under the Indian Penal Code.
