Extreme obesity increases risk of dying

Adults with extreme obesity have increased risk of dying at a young age from cancer and many other causes, including heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and kidney and liver diseases, says a new research.

People with class III (or extreme) obesity had a dramatic reduction in life expectancy compared with people of normal weight, the findings showed.

“While once a relatively uncommon condition, the prevalence of class III, or extreme, obesity is on the rise,” said Cari Kitahara from the National Cancer Institute (NCI), part of the National Institutes of Health in the US.

Youth Congress protests against Railway Budget

Youth Congress workers staged a protest against the 2014-15 railway budget proposals here on Wednesday, criticizing the government for the hike in rail fares.

A protester, DA Pramodhsankar, said that the new railway budget is not in favour of the common man.

“The new railway budget is not for the common man. Prime Minister Narendra Modi should have thought of the entire country. Modi Union Railway Minister Sadanand Gowda didn’t bring the ‘good days’ with this budget,” said Pramodshankar.

The tweet test was carried out by Time magazine using a reading comprehension survey known as Simple Measure of Gobbledygook (SMOG).

It found that while teenage sensation Justin Bieber tweets like a fifth grader, US President Barack Obama tweets like a seventh grader!

Rolls-Royce announces record half-year sales

ANI-Businesswire India): Rolls-Royce Motor Cars today announced that the company has enjoyed a record half-year in 2014, with sales increasing by 33 per cent worldwide compared with the same period in 2013.

Sales growth was seen in all regions, with a particularly strong performance in Europe, up by over 60 per cent, Asia Pacific up by almost 40 per cent and the Middle East up by over 30 per cent. The United States and China also saw double-digit growth. In Europe, strong performance was seen in Germany, with sales doubling.

Economic Survey 2013-14: India has second fastest growing services sector

India has the second fastest growing services sector in the world with a compound annual growth rate at 9 percent, just below China’s 10.9 percent, during 2001 to 2012, the Economic Survey said Wednesday.

Among the world’s top 15 countries in terms of GDP, India ranked 10th in terms of overall GDP and 12th in terms of services GDP in 2012, it said.

“India has the second fastest growing services sector with CAGR at 9 percent, just below China?s 10.9 percent, during the last 11-year period from 2001 to 2012,” the survey said.

Typhoon makes landfall in Japan

Typhoon Neoguri made landfall Thursday in Japan’s southwest region, the meteorological agency said.

According to the agency, the typhoon hit Akune city in Kagoshima Prefecture in southwest Kyushu region, Xinhua reported.

The agency has warned of heavy rains over Shikoku Island.

Due to strong winds, parts of western and northern Japan would also be affected in the coming days.

The meteorological agency has also warned of landslides.

Evacuation orders have been issued to residents in Miyazaki, Kumamoto and Kagoshima prefectures in the Kyushu region.

In a first, biologists have identified a key photoreceptor cell deep inside the brain of birds which takes the role of eyes in humans by directly responding to light and regulates breeding activity according to seasonal changes.

This study revealed that nerve cells existing deep inside the brains of quails, called cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)-contacting neurons, respond directly to light.

These neurons are involved in detecting the arrival of spring and thus regulate breeding activities in birds.

Siblings likelier to influence childhood obesity risk than parents

A new study has revealed that having an obese sibling associated with more than double the obesity risk of an obese parent; risk even stronger among same-gender siblings.

The study led by an investigator at the Mongan Institute for Health Policy at Massachusetts General Hospital found that the risk associated with having an obese sibling is more than twice as great as that of having an obese parent, and that risk is even stronger among siblings of the same gender.

Even low level of arsenic exposure not safe: Study

Researchers in the US have found that even a very low exposure to arsenic can cause cancer in humans, “raising the possibility that no level of arsenic appears to be safe”.

The study carried out at the National Toxicology Programme (NTP) Laboratory in the US found that mice exposed to low doses of arsenic in drinking water developed lung cancer.

“This is the first study to show tumour development in animals exposed to very low levels of arsenic, levels similar to which humans might be exposed,” said Michael Waalkes, director of NTP.

A research has discovered new genes that could be targeted in order to treat asthmatic disease, which currently affects over 200 million people worldwide.

The goal of the study was to find genes whose neighborhoods were active in diseased cells, but inactive in healthy cells. Genes that were in active neighborhoods in diseased cells were likely to contribute to disease, and could potentially be targeted with drug treatments.

The 19-year-old from Newport, Nathaniel Bolwell, had ordered a large margherita pizza worth 17.99 pounds, but he later realized that the American restaurant chain had overdrawn 179,000 pounds from his bank account, the Mirror reported.

The war in Afghanistan is causing an increase in casualties, said Georgette Gagnon, Director of Human Rights for the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan ( UNAMA).

The conflict in Afghanistan has caused an increase of 24 percent compared to the first half of 2013. The United Nations recorded 1,564 deaths and 3,284 injured which sums up to a 24 percent overall increase in casualties, said Gagnon.

United States is eventually withdrawing military bases spread across Afghanistan after war for more than a decade against the Taliban.

Pakistan Army claims 80 pct of Miramshah cleared

The Pakistan Army on Wednesday claimed that 80 per cent of Miramshah has been cleared during the North Waziristan operation.

The Dawn quoted Major General Zafarullah Khan, as saying that Operation Zarb-i-Azb is still on to flush out the remainder of the outlawed Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan, besides foreign militants. He said TTP commander Hafiz Gul Bahadur, if spotted, would be eliminated without any delay.

On Wednesday, Miramshah, the main town in North Waziristan, was opened for national and international media for the first time since the launch of the operation.

PTI moves Pak EC over Sharif’s qualification as National Assembly member

The Imran Khan-led Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) party moved the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Wednesday over Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s qualification as a National Assembly member.

Dawn News said PTI lawmakers Ali Mohammad Khan and Murad Saeed approached ECP on the issue.

Khan and Saeed demanded that action be taken against Sharif under Article 62 and 63 of the Pakistan Constitution.
