18-yr-old raped at gunpoint

An eighteen-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a youth at gunpoint in Bhensaheri village here, following which a case has been registered against two persons, police said.

According to a complaint filed by the mother of the girl at Chapra Police Station, Rafik and Kalam entered the girl’s house yesterday. Kalam put the revolver on the girl’s head while Rafik allegedly raped her, SHO Arun Kumar Tyagi said.

The police has registered a case against the two in this connection, Tyagi said, adding, both the accused are absconding.

Amritsar: Heroin worth Rs 7.5 crore seized by Punjab Police

Punjab Police today seized 1.5 kg heroin worth Rs. 7.5 crore from the house of an alleged peddler in New Delhi.

The drug was recovered from the house of Raman Pandit, who was supplied the contraband by a Pakistan-based smuggler Akram Dayal, IGP (Border) Ishwar Chander said in Amritsar.

Mr Chander said the seizure has been made after the interrogation of Mr Pandit who was arrested on July 5 along with co-accused Bhajan Singh with 12 kg heroin valued at Rs. 60 crore, he said.

Mr Pandit, a resident of Delhi, was the “end-recipient” of the drugs supplied under the racket.

London to be World’s Top Tourist Destination, Finds Survey

London is likely to become world’s top tourist city with the most international overnight visitors, according to a survey.

The MasterCard Global Destination Cities Index report found on Wednesday that the British capital is expected to welcome most number of international overnight visitors, an estimated 18.69 million, topping the list of most visited 132 destinations across the world, Xinhua reported.

The report witnessed tight contest between London and Bangkok in the past few years.

Governor approves ordinance on Maratha, Muslim reservation in Maharashtra

Decks have been cleared for Maharashtra government to issue an ordinance to provide reservations to Marathas and Muslims with the Governor on Wednesday putting his stamp of approval on the proposal.

Official sources said Governor K Sankaranarayanan signed a notification paving the way for promulgating an ordinance to implement the Cabinet’s June 26, 2014 decision to provide 16 per cent reservation for Marathas and 5 per cent for Muslim communities in jobs and educational institutions.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a notice to the Delhi Government over reports of mid-day meal poisoning at the Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya in Patparganj area of East Delhi.

The NHRC has taken a suo motu cognizance of a media report that 22 students, aged between 7 to 14 years, of the school had fallen ill after consuming mid-day meal. The Commission has observed that the contents of the press report, if true, raised a serious issue of violation of human rights.

Rohtas bandh hits normal life

The 9-hour Rohtas district bandh, called by BJP and LJP to protest the police firing at Akbarpur in which two persons were killed on Tuesday, hit the normal life today.

Shops were closed and vehicles did not ply. The protesters blocked traffic in various places in Sasaram town and adjoining areas, police said.

Scores of BJP and LJP workers and their supporters moved in various places in the district enforcing the bandh and demanded Rs 10 lakh compensation for the families of the victims by the administration.

A new computer model by NASA has found that friction from tides could help some distant Earth-sized planets, traveling in dangerous orbits, to create habitable situations.

The findings were consistent with observations that Earth-sized planets appear to be very common in other star systems. Although heat could be a destructive force for some planets but the right amount of friction, and therefore heat, could be helpful in surviving.

A US court has denied a request made by a Sikh rights group to file an amended complaint against Congress party president Sonia Gandhi in connection with the 1984 anti-Sikh riots case.
Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) had written to US District Judge Brian Cogan requesting “leave to further amend the complaint” against Gandhi was denied by the judge who said in his order that since the case against Gandhi was dismissed last month, there is no basis for SFJ to seek further amendment of the complaint.

Indian worker returning from Iraq succumbs to illness

An Indian youth, Shemshar Singh, died in a Sharjah hospital while returning home from war-torn Iraq.

Shemshar, 24, who belonged to Gurdaspur District of Punjab, was returning from Iraq with 11 other colleagues on June 22, when he fell seriously ill and was admitted to a Sharjah hospital in Dubai city.

Succha Singh, Shemshar’s father, said that his son was working in Iraq as a labourer as he had volunteered to provide financial assistance to the family.

Mentally challenged woman raped by 67-yr-old in Salem

A 24-year-old mentally challenged woman was allegedly raped by a senior citizen here, following which the accused has been arrested, police said.

The incident took place on June 28, 2014 when 67-year-old Vellaiyan, a resident of Puducolony, raped the woman after taking her to a hut. However, a police complaint in this regard was lodged by the woman’s family on Wednesday, following which Vellaiyan was arrested.

He was produced before Additional District Mahila Court Judge Kalaivani who remanded him to 15 days judicial custody last evening, police said.PTI

A new smartphone app being tested at St Louis Children’s Hospital in the US is turning out to be a life-saving experience for children with heart conditions.

Named AliveCor, it is a smartphone cover with two metal plates on the back.

It can be used with an app on the phone to conduct an electrocardiogram (ECG) wirelessly which can be sent from the smartphone to the doctor.

The device, however, is not a substitute for a full ECG because it only tests the heart’s rhythm and rate.

Four killed in Afghanistan attack

At least four people were killed Thursday in a Taliban attack on a mine clearance agency convoy in Afghanistan’s Herat province.

According to officials, the victims were working with HALO Trust, a non-governmental agency in charge of clearing mines and explosive remnants of war in the province, 640 km west of Afghan capital Kabul, Xinhua reported.

Thursday’s attack is the second attack on mine clearing agencies this year.

On June 10, Taliban attacked a de-mining site in eastern Logar province, killing eight people and injuring three.IANS

AP govt. to host Iftar party in Vijayawada

Vasectomy, a surgical procedure for male sterilisation, may help you prevent pregnancy permanently, but it poses increased risk of prostate cancer, and a stronger risk for advanced or lethal prostate cancer, says a study.

The effect appeared to be stronger among men who had a vasectomy at a younger age, according to the study.

“The results support the hypothesis that vasectomy is associated with an increased risk of advanced or lethal prostate cancer,” said Lorelei Mucci, associate professor of epidemiology at Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) in the US.

Militants gun down five Pakistani soldiers in Balochistan

Armed militants killed five security personnel in Pakistan’s southwestern province, Balochistan, said officials.

Gunmen attacked a check post of the Frontier Corps paramilitary force in resource-rich Dukki area of Balochistan. The gunmen were armed with automatic weapons, said a security official.

The official said that an FC soldier sustained serious bullet wounds during the incident. The attackers immediately escaped from the spot in their vehicles, he added.

The injured soldier was hospitalized within minutes, reports the Dawn.
