Six members of a family, including four children were killed by a lone gunman following a domestic dispute here on Thursday as police pieced together details of the latest horrific shooting rampage in the United States.

Ron Lee Haskell, 33, the capital-murder suspect in the shooting deaths of six members of a family at their Spring home apparently posed as a delivery man to gain entry to the house, police said.

Six members of marriage party killed in accident

Six persons, including a two-year-old boy and three women, were killed and nine injured when their van overturned at Neerdi, about 75 kms from here today, police said.

A group of 28 tribals were going to attend a marriage function in the van when the mishap occurred.

Two others, with serious injuries are being treated at a hospital, seven others were treated as outpatients, police said.

Punjab CM Badal meets BJP President Amit Shah

Consensus has been reached with states on GST implementation: Jaitley

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Thursday said the Centre has reached a consensus with a majority of the states regarding the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST). In an exclusive interview to ANI’s Editor (News) Smita Prakash, Jaitley said, “The states are not against the GST. I have consulted with almost every state, and there is a consensus.” On being asked whether the government is on a collision with the states regarding the GST, Jaitley admitted that one or two states do have some issues, and the government will try to resolve that.

Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Raghuram Rajan on Thursday said that he was determined to ease consumer inflation through a combination of demand and supply management. An RBI panel in January recommended bringing consumer price index (CPI) inflation down to around eight percent by the end of January 2015 and to six percent by the end of the following year. Rajan said the RBI has been working for combating inflation through a combination of supply and demand management.

Israel tells Palestinians in Gaza to evacuate homes

The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) Thursday told Palestinians living near the Gaza Strip border to evacuate their homes, media reports said.

More than 100,000 Palestinians residing in areas adjacent to the border received notification from the IDF in a recorded message over the phone that they must evacuate their houses as quickly as possible, Xinhua reported citing the Ynet news website as saying.

Analysts say this move could be read as a possible preparation for an IDF ground operation in the strip or as part of Israel’s psychological warfare on Hamas.

Militant groups kill seven in Syria

At least seven people, including three women, were killed in separate incidents in central and southern Syria Thursday, media reported.

Ammar al-Khatib, a member of the National Reconciliation Committee, was assassinated in Tal town in the countryside of the capital Damascus along with his 14-year-old son, Xinhua reported citing the official SANA news agency.

The gunmen opened fire on al-Khatib and his son near Tal’s al-Basha Mosque.

Rhino poached in Assam

Poachers have killed yet another one-horned rhino in Assam’s Kaziranga National Park and took away its horn, officials said Thursday.

The incident came to the light Thursday when forest guards patrolling the park recovered the carcass of a male rhino from the Burhapahar forest range of the park.

Officials said the poachers killed the rhino Wednesday night.

“The poachers chopped off the horn and fled,” a park official said.

Delhi’s hottest day of July in 2 years, temperature at 41.3 deg C

Mercury soared in the national capital on Thursday recording the hottest day of July in last two years with the maximum temperature settling at 41.3 degree Celsius and no signs of rains.

The maximum temperature was a degree higher than yesterday’s maximum of 40.5 degree Celsius.

“Last year, the mercury only soared as high as 39.2 degree Celsius while in 2012 it had touched 43.5 degree Celsius. Usually, July witnesses monsoon and the current upward trend in temperature is mainly due to elusive rains,” a MeT department official said.

Facing acute shortage of housemaids, Saudi Arabia has started recruiting female domestic helps from India under a first-ever labour pact inked between the two nations in January.

Saudi Deputy Minister of Labour Mufarrij Al-Huqbani said the joint Saudi-Indian working team has finalised the recruitment contract that contains provisions to ensure the authenticity and implementation of the employment contract.

It also contains provisions to ensure recruitment cost, action against hiring agencies violating laws and a mechanism to prevent cheating by middlemen, the Saudi Gazette reported.

Ruling National Conference today attacked BJP, saying the party made tall claims during the Lok Sabha election campaign, but the promises appear to be hollow as the common man is being hit hard by inflation now.

“The tall claims and catchy promises appear to be hollow with the common man getting terribly hit by inflation and alarming price rise,” Provincial President National Conference Devender Singh Rana said today.

Zohra Sehgal passes away at 102

Sehgal, who has starred in films like Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Dil Se and Cheeni Kum, was last seen in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Sawariyaa (2007).

She was born on April 27, 1912, in Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh, third of her seven siblings – and grew up in Chakrata, now in Uttarakhand (near Dehradun).

She began her career as a dancer with Uday Shankar in 1935 and performed across Japan, Egypt, Europe and the US. She married scientist, painter and dancer Kameshwar Sehgal in August 1942. The couple had two children, Kiran and Pavan.
