RBI in way of Amanath – Canara Bank merger

Secretary of Amanath Bank Members Welfare Association, Mr. Mohammed Wazeer Baig said in a press release that the petition filed by former union minister C. K. Jaffer Sharief in the Karnataka High Court regarding withdrawing of the depositors money from Amanath Co Operative Bank (ACB) is under hearing.

Earlier, the High Court judge had issued a direction to Mr. Sharief to deposit Rs. 430 crore in Amanath Bank to stop the merger with Canara Bank on November 25 last year. Since the direction was not obeyed, the case hearing is still going on.

The IMF has assessed Pakistan’s gross external financing requirements at USD 10.8 billion for the new fiscal year, a new report said.

The Andhra Pradesh government has decided to develop the picturesque and heritage-rich port city of Visakhapatnam and the district as a tourism hub.

DC seizes lorries illegally transporting sand

Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner AB Ibrahim has seized several lorries illegally transporting sand to other places without proper documents here on Wednesday evening.

The seizures were affected with the assistance of District Superintendent of Police Sharanappa, official sources said.

The DC was on his way to Neriya of Beltangady taluk from here when he observed the lorries and checked them. Several of them were found to be illegally carrying sand out of the district and grossly overloaded. As many as seven of the 33 lorries checked did not have permits, the sources said.

Rs 700 Crore Allocated for Power, Water Reforms in Delhi

A total of Rs. 700 crore was allocated on Thursday in the Union Budget for carrying out reforms in power and water sectors in the national capital.

Presenting the budget, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley proposed Rs. 500 crore for reform in the water sector while Rs. 200 crore has been set aside for reform in the power sector.

The city has been facing long power cuts during the peak summer months despite adequate availability of power. Major power transmission lines often trip when the load increases.

A doctor of a government hospital was yesterday allegedly beaten up and the hospital ransacked by the relatives of a teenager who succumbed to his injuries after falling off from a suburban train, the police said.

Souvik Ghosh (17) a resident of Titagarh and a student of class XI sustained fatal injuries when his head rammed into an electric post along the railway tracks while he was leaning out of a running suburban train and fell off, a senior officer of the Barrackpore Police Commissionarate said.

Infosys net profit up in first quarter

Indian IT bellwether Infosys Ltd posted a net profit of Rs.2,866 crore for the first quarter (April-June) of this fiscal (2014-15), registering 21.6 percent year-on-year (YoY) and 3.5 percent sequential growth.

In a regulatory filing to the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) Friday, the global software major said its consolidated income for the quarter under review (Q1) increased 13.3 percent YoY and 0.8 percent sequentially to Rs.12,770 crore.

Freed from abusive owner, elephant recuperates in Mathura

Raju, a 50-year-old elephant who was recently rescued from his abusive owner in Allahabad, is now recuperating at an elephant care centre.

Raju’s owner used to ill treat him and he has several injuries on the legs and head, said chief of Elephant Conservation and Care Centre Yaduraj Kadpekar. The owner did not use to give him sufficient food and he was very weak so a local court directed the forest department to take care of him, he said.

North Delhi Mayor lauds Arun Jaitley’s Budjet

Hailing the Union budget, North Delhi Mayor Yogender Chandolia on Thursday termed it as “inclusive” and said the decision to allocate Rs 700 crore to overcome problems of power transmission and water distribution system in Delhi will help in making the national capital a world-class city.

26,000 security personnel deployed for FIFA final

About 26,000 armed personnel will be deployed to ensure public safety during the World Cup final at Rio’s Maracana stadium Sunday.

The announcement was made after a meeting between government officials and representatives from football governing body FIFA, reported Xinhua.

“We will maintain the standard of excellence for public safety that we have had since the beginning of the World Cup,” Brazil’s Justice Minister Jose Eduardo Cardozo said.

Brazil has deployed some 100,000 police and 50,000 military troops during the World Cup.

A new study has found a technique to progress toward addressing the texture problem in low-fat wieners that are made with olive oil rather than pork fat.

To turn a traditional hot dog that comes with a large dose of pork back-fat into a more healthful frankfurter, the researchers have developed olive oil “bulking agents” to replace the saturated animal fat.

The substitutes contain 55 percent olive oil, which contains more healthful unsaturated fats, and could reduce the calories by more than a third.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Thursday termed the Union budget as a “dud”, saying it has nothing to offer to any section of the society and has missed out on important issues like corruption, inflation and looming drought.

Drone kills six suspected militants, injures two in N W Pakistan

A U.S. drone reportedly killed six suspected militants in North West Pakistan on Thursday.

Official sources were quoted, as saying that the incident took place in North West Pakistan’s Datta Khel District.

Apart from the dead, two others were reportedly injured by the strike on a mud house in the area.

The drone strike took place about 45 km west of Miranshah, the capital of North West Pakistan. (ANI)
