AI, Indigo flights come close to collision

An Indigo flight from Bagdogra came close to a descending Air India plane over Bagdogra in West Bengal this afternoon, raising the spectre of a collision and giving scare to about 250 passengers on board the two aircraft.

The Air Traffic Control (ATC) had given clearance to both the aircraft, according to Indigo airline spokesperson.

The Air India flight 879, carrying 120 passengers, was descending and the Indigo Bagdogra-Delhi flight 6E472 with 130 passengers on board was given clearance to climb the 30,000-feet height, Indigo spokesman said.

Iranian PM announces cabinet reshuffle

Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny Friday announced new cabinet reshuffle, promoting five TDs (members of parliament) to the cabinet.

The appointments were formalised by Irish President Michael D Higgins later in the afternoon. Kenny appointed Paschal Donohoe, Alan Kelly, Jan O’Sullivan, Alex White and Heather Humphreys as cabinet ministers, Xinhua reported.

In a statement, Kenny said he has accepted the resignations of Rabbitte, Quinn, Hogan and Deenihan as members of the government.

Kenny also said he approved the resignation of Eamon Gilmore as minister of foreign affairs.

Russia waves off 90 percent of Cuba’s debt

Russia has scrapped 90 percent of Cuba’s debt to Moscow, the Kremlin press service said Friday.

The announcement came on the same day when Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in Cuba early Friday for an official visit to the island, the first stop of his Latin America tour, Xinhua reported.

Russian and Cuban governments signed a protocol last October over the debt, which amounted 35.2 billion dollars. It accumulated when Cuba was a Soviet ally in the second half of the 20th century.

Russia seeks UN Security Council’s action on Ukraine

Russia Friday circulated a document on the Ukraine crisis among the UN Security Council members which Moscow hopes will serve as the core of a resolution to end the three-month conflict.

The UN Security Council should express deep concern about the civilian casualties, show support of the April 17 Geneva declaration and recent Berlin agreement on sustainable ceasefire, Xinhua quoted Vitaly Churkin, Russia’s envoy to the UN, as telling media about the text.

‘Israel not to end Gaza offensive for global pressure’

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Friday his country would not bow to international pressure to halt the offensive on Gaza.

“No international pressure will prevent us from acting with full power,” Xinhua quoted Netanyahu as telling in a news conference. “The operation will continue until quiet is returned to Israel.”

As Netanyahu talked to reporters in Tel Aviv, Gaza militants fired a rocket toward the city, and was intercepted over the Tel Aviv metropolitan area, an Israeli army announcement said.

Magnitude-6.8 quake hits Japan

A powerful quake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale jolted Fukushima prefecture in the northeast Japan early Saturday, Xinhua reported. There was no immediate news of any damage to property or injuries to anyone.

The temblor, which struck at 4. 22 a.m., triggered tsunami warnings along the pacific coast of Fukushima, Miyagi and Iwate prefectures. It had a depth of 10 kilometres, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

The quake was registered at level four on the Japan’s seismic scale of 7 in some parts of Fukushima prefecture.

UN urges Europe to take in more Syrian refugees

The UN refugee agency Friday called for European countries to grant asylum to a growing number of Syrian refugees, many of whom are on long and dangerous journeys to seek safety in Europe.

“An increasing number of Syrians are now seeking safety in countries beyond the immediate region,” Xinhua quoted UNHCR spokesperson Melissa Fleming as telling in a press briefing.

Since the conflict began in March 2011, around 123,600 Syrians have sought asylum in Europe. There are over 2.9 million refugees in countries immediately adjacent to Syria.

South Central Railway has shown an improved performance in gross earnings and traffic volume during April to June, 2014 of the current fiscal 2014-15, i.e., vis-à-vis last year. The gross originating earnings of SCR has registered 11.6% growth during the first quarter from April to June, 2014 of the current financial year. Israeli jets bomb Gaza, death toll reaches 100 in 4 days

Israeli jets bombed the Gaza Strip for the fourth day today killing 10 Palestinians as the death toll rose to 100 on a day when the Jewish state was targeted for the first time by rocket attacks from Lebanon since the military offensive began.

Ten Palestinians were killed in Israeli airstrikes today, the Palestinian Ministry of Health said.

11,000 files were destroyed as per Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s orders to weed out files and papers but none of these related to the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi, Home Minister Rajnath Singh said today.

Singh said this in a suo motu statement in Rajya Sabha two days after CPI-M MP P Rajeev alleged on the basis of media reports that 1.5 lakh files including those relating to the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi were destroyed on directions of the Prime Minister.

Plane crash kills 4 in northwest Mexico

A plane crash in eastern Mexico has killed four people and injured two others, local authorities said on Friday.

The wreckage of the small Cessna aircraft was discovered Thursday in the town of Alto Lucero, civil protection official Carlos Martinez told reporters.

Inside, rescuers found four bodies, he said. Investigators are probing what caused the crash.
