Union Budget, IIP data, Infosys results to drive stock markets

In an eventful week ahead, stock markets would take cues from a host of important triggers, including the Union Budget for 2014-15, industrial production data and quarterly earnings from Infosys, say experts. The week also marks the beginning of the Q1 June quarter corporate earnings season, with Infosys announcing its result on July 11.

Industrial production data for May will come out on Friday. Marketmen said that majorly investors, be it domestic or global, are eyeing the Union Budget for 2014-15 on July 10.

90 Per Cent Village Households in India Don’t Have Refrigerators: Survey

Nearly half of the total number of households in Indian villages had a television, but only less than 10 per cent owned a refrigerator in 2011-12, as per the latest government survey.

Both the items have shown an increase from 2004-05, when only a quarter of households in villages had TVs and less than five per cent owned refrigerators.

In contrast, about 56 per cent families in cities didn’t have refrigerators in 2011-12, while 80 per cent households had TVs.

BJP stages walkout on drought issue

Accusing the Congress of failure in tackling the drought situation in the state, BJP members today staged a walkout in the Karnataka Assembly.

During a debate on the issue, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah assured the House that all steps had been taken to face drought-related problems and that the government is ready to face it.

“The government is ready to face drought. There is no dearth of money. The government will give money to solve all problems relating to drought including drinking water problem,” he said.

Bangalore serial blast case: SC grants interim bail to Maudany

The Supreme Court on Friday granted one-month bail to Abdul Nazir Maudany, prime accused in 2008 Bangalore serial bomb blast case, on health ground.

A bench of justices J Chelameswar and AK Sikri granted the relief as the accused is suffering from various ailments but directed him not to leave Bangalore.

The court said the Karnataka government is at liberty to take all steps to ensure that he does not get in touch with witnesses in the case, including putting him under surveillance.

Ebola situation not out of control: WHO official

A senior World Health Organisation official said in Sierra Leone Friday that the Ebola situation is not out of control.

Assistant Director-General for Health Security in the World Health Organisation Keiji Fukunda who visited the epic areas Kailahun and Kenema, Sierra Leone said, “I do believe however that the situation is urgent and serious.

“I believe that the right steps have been implemented. It’s a matter of more persistence and more work to get a turn around.”

He described Ebola as “a subregional issue and working with counterparts is very important”.

‘Homemade’ telescope helps discover 7 hidden dwarf galaxies

A new ‘homemade’ telescope has helped the scientists in finding seven unseen dwarf galaxies in space.

Astronomers from Yale University made a telescope by stitching together telephoto lenses, which came to their aid in discovering the celestial surprises that were previously overlooked because of their diffuse nature. The galaxies may yield important insights into dark matter and galaxy evolution, while possibly signaling the discovery of a new class of objects in space.

Ghaziabad: Fire Breaks Out in Building Basement, Several Cars Gutted

Several cars were gutted in a fire that broke out this afternoon in the basement of a residential building in Indirapuram area in Ghaziabad.

There were no casualties in the fire that struck the basement of Tower Number 2 of ATS residential society in Nitikhand area of Indirapuram at around 1 pm, a senior fire official said.

As many as 16 fire engines were rushed to the spot, and firemen were still dousing the flames, Ghaziabad Chief fire officer A P Singh said, adding that more engines would be required to douse the flames.

Couple Allegedly Kills 6-Year-Old Niece After Kidnapping Goes Awry

Bangalore: A six-year-old girl was kidnapped and killed, allegedly by her aunt and uncle, in Bangalore on Wednesday.

Police have arrested Salman Shah and his wife Shabreen, who allegedly killed the girl after the kidnapping went wrong

The victim, whose name has been withheld, was picked up early from school by Shabreen, police said.

Shabreen, who regularly picked up the girl, reportedly told school authorities that she needed to visit her ailing grandmother.
