Harish Rao accuses Congress of having dual stand on Polavaram

Telangana Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao on Saturday accused the Congress party of adopting a dual stand on the issue of Polavaram Project.

Speaking to media persons, Harish Rao said that the Congress leaders were shedding ‘crocodile tears’ on the issue. He asked the Congress leaders to prove their committment by stalling the Polavaram Bill in the Rajya Sabha. He maintained that the TRS Government would approach the court against the Bill which facilitates the merger of seven mandals of Khammam with Seemandhra. (INN)

Decision on new AP capital in 10 days: Naidu

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu on Saturday said that the decision on the location of new capital of Andhra Pradesh will be taken in next 10 days.

Addressing a TDP meeting here, Naidu hinted that the location for new capital has been finalised and an official announcement in this regard would be made in the next 10 days. He also said that the Assembly constituencies in the residuary State might face delimitation and Krishna district might see an increase in five Assembly segments. (INN)

One-day meet on street children organised

An event was organised here Saturday to bring a sustainable change in the lives of street children.

Organised by a non-governmental organisation (NGO) Childhood Enhancement through Training and Action (CHETNA), representatives from the police, government and other NGOs attended the day-long consultation.

The participants agreed that only the government has the resources and the authority to ensure children’s rights at a national level.

Chairperson of National Commission for Protection of Child Rights Kaushal Singh was also present.

Man held for impersonating as CBI officer

A man was arrested here for posing as a senior officer of the CBI and cheating people, police said Saturday.

The Delhi Police Crime Branch arrested 38-year-old Saji Kumar, hailing from Pathanamthitta in Kerala, from Taimur Nagar area of south Delhi after a complaint was filed against him Friday under various charges dealing with impersonation and cheating.

Police said Kumar posed as Ajith Kumar, an ‘inspector general of police’ in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), and cheated innocent people.

India lead England by 18 runs at tea

India were leading England by 18 runs in their second innings as they went into the tea break on Day 4 of the first Test at Trent Bridge here Sunday.

India were batting at 57/1 after bowling out the hosts for 496. Shikhar Dhawan (29) was the only Indian wicket to fall in the second session as he was caught and bowled by spinner Moeen Ali.

Opener Murali Vijay was batting on 19 not out while Cheteshwar Pujara (8 not out) hit two consecutive boundaries off his first two deliveries before tea was called.

Build houses for clash victims: NHRC to Odisha

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has directed the Odisha government to build new houses for families who lost their homes in an ethnic clash in the state two years ago, a petitioner said Saturday.

Acting on a complaint by rights activist Akhand, the NHRC also ordered the authorities to pay appropriate compensation to the affected families.

Akhand said people from an upper caste attacked Dalit families in Ratakhandi village in Boudh district over some old enmity and torched their houses Sep 18 and 19, 2012.

Jaitley promises more income tax relief if economy improves

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley Saturday promised more concessions in income tax if the economy improves next year.

“We do not want a high taxation regime. It was because of the high taxation regime of the previous government that inflation rose,” Jaitley said, replying to questions on the budget on India TV’s talk show, Aap Ki Adalat.

“Had the centre had more money in its coffers, I would have given more (relief). May be, if the government has more money tomorrow, I will raise (the concessions)”, he added.

Erdogan to stay Turkey PM, contest presidential election

Turkey’s Higher Election Board (YSK) unanimously ruled Saturday that Recep Tayyip Erdogan can take part in the country’s presidential race while keeping his post as prime minister.

The YSK said it is a constitutional right for Erdogan to take part in the presidential race without leaving his post, adding that it rejected all 15 requests calling for forcing Erdogan to resign, Xinhua reported.

Turkey’s presidential election will be held Aug 10.

The Turkish opposition parties have been calling on Erdogan to resign as the prime minister to race equally for presidency.

13-year-old Nepali girl gives birth to child

A 13-year-old girl in Nepal’s Chitwan District gave birth to a child at Bharatpur Hospital recently.

One Chandra Bahadur Chhetri of Kathar, Chitwan, reportedly raped the girl before she became pregnant.

According to Nepal News, police have taken Chhetri into custody for investigation.

The girl and her newborn were said to be normal. (ANI)

No violation of Constitution in passing Polavaram Bill: Naidu

Parliamentary Affairs Minister M Venkaiah Naidu today said there was no violation of the Constitution in the passing of Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill in the Lok Sabha yesterday.

The Bill was intended to replace Ordinance issued on May 29, 2014 for transferring some of the villages and mandals of Telangana to the residuary state of Andhra Pradesh in connection with the construction of Polavaram Multi-purpose Irrigation project.

100 MBBS seats restored in Himachal colleges

The Medical Council of India (MCI) has recommended renewal of permission for 100 MBBS seats in both the government medical colleges in Himachal Pradesh, Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh said here Saturday.

He said the state had vigorously pursued the matter with the central government for restoring the seats in the Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital in Shimla and Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College in Tanda.

The chief minister said the state has assured the MCI that shortcomings, if any, will be rectified.

Delhi boy electrocuted

A 10-year-old boy was electrocuted Saturday when he came in contact with a high tension wire at his home here, police said.

Nitish Kumar, a student of Class 6, was playing on the terrace of his house in Swaroop Nagar area of north Delhi Saturday morning, when he accidentally touched a high tension wire.

His mother took him to hospital where doctors declared him dead.

Haryana hikes ex-gratia for bravehearts

The Haryana government Saturday announced a huge hike in the ex-gratia given to the families of central paramilitary forces from Haryana who are killed or disabled in an operational area or in terrorist-related activities.

Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda made the announcement here after a cabinet meeting.

Hooda said the ex-gratia amount of Rs 2.5 lakh given in case of death in war and action against militants or terrorists has now been increased to Rs.20 lakh.

Three of Indian-American family killed in accident

Three members of an Indian-American family died when their car was hit by a pickup driven by a possibly drunk woman in the US state of Texas, media reported.

Ryera Patel, 5, and Trish Patel, 12, were killed along with their mother Heena Patel, 43, when their van, driven by father Ketanbhai Patel, 42, swerved to avoid the pickup driven by Shelby Taylor, 22, in Kilgore city in eastern Texas Thursday, the News-journal reported Friday.

The parents were taken to the Good Shepherd Medical Centre in Longview, where Heena succumbed to her injures.
