Israel-Gaza air strikes kill 151 people

Even as Israel, Hamas continue to remain defiant and the death toll increased to 151, western countries will hold a meeting in Vienna on Sunday to on how to ceasefire in Gaza.

Britain, US, France and Germany will meet in Vienna where the discussion will be held on the sidelines of talks on Iran’s nuclear programme, the AFP reported.

The talks will be held a day after UN Security Council urged both Hamas and Israel to restore the “calm and restitution of the November 2012 ceasefire.”

Omar hits at Centre over allotment of IIT only to Jammu

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today accused the Centre of “brazenly discriminating” against Kashmir by allotting IIT only to the Jammu region, and alleged that PDP was hand in gloves with the BJP by maintaining “criminal silence” over the matter.

Omar said the conspicuous silence maintained by PDP and its MPs over this “lopsided and discriminatory” decision of the BJP government proved the opposition party’s “covert understanding” with BJP to divide the state on regional lines by engineering a rift between Kashmir and Jammu regions.

Bassi wants compulsory self-defence training for girls

Delhi Police Commissioner BS Bassi on Saturday pitched for compulsory self-defence training for girls from the age of seven years even at the expense of saying “goodbye” to regular subjects so that she can be able to “hit back” if somebody dares to misbehave with her.

“I want to urge you all to start campaign to educate girl students in self defense. At the age of seven or so, every girl in school should be put through a compulsory self-defence training program which should continue till class 10,” said Bassi.

Jaipal Reddy attacks NDA govt on Polavaram project issue

Senior Congress leader and former union minister S Jaipal Reddy today attacked the NDA government over the Polavaram project issue, alleging the amendment brought to the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill was “unconstitutional and undemocratic”.

“In my view, the way the amendment has been brought to the AP Reorganisation bill by the NDA government is one-sided, unconstitutional and undemocratic. It is unconstitutional because the process of the division of the state came to an end on March 2,” Reddy told reporters here.

Man held for molesting minor daughter

A middle-aged man was today arrested in Girgaum here for allegedly sexually harassing his 17-year-old daughter for over a year, police said today.

The complaint was registered yesterday and the 50-year-old man was immediately arrested, they said.

“The victim and her family used to stay in a small house. The father used to touch the victim inappropriately while sleeping,” an official from VP Road police station said.

Iraqi forces kill over 70 Sunni militants

Iraqi security forces Saturday fought back attacks from Sunni groups across the country, killing over 70 militants, officials said.

Sunni militants, claiming to be from Islamic State (IS), attacked Haditha city, 200 km west of Baghdad in the western Anbar province, and the nearby strategic dam on the Euphrates river, Xinhua reported citing a provincial police source as saying.

Iraqi troops and some government-backed Sahwa paramilitary group fought back the attacks and killed over 40 militants, the source said.

Afghan election standoff ends, all ballots will be audited

The Afghan presidential election standoff ended Saturday after two days of intense talks between two presidential candidates and the US Secretary of State John Kerry.

Kerry during a joint press conference with two presidential runners late Saturday announced that all ballots cast during June 14 runoff polls will be audited.

The two runners Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai and Abdullah Abdullah have reached an agreement to audit all votes and form a unity government.

10 women killed in Baghdad attacks

At least 10 women were killed and 23 others wounded in attacks at a residential complex here Saturday, an interior ministry source said.

Unidentified gunmen raided an apartment in Baghdad’s eastern district of Zayouna, killing 10 women and wounding three others. They then attacked another apartment nearby, injuring 15 women and five men, the source told Xinhua.

It’s not immediately clear who is behind the attack.

Netherlands beat Brazil to take third place in World Cup

The Netherlands took third place at the FIFA World Cup thanks to a 3-0 victory over hosts Brazil here at the Estadio Nacional Saturday.

Louis van Gaal’s side kept a clean sheet for the third match in a row, reports Xinhua.

Captain Robin van Persie put his team ahead only three minutes into the game.

Arjen Robben dashed into the box from his right and the winger was pulled down by Brazil skipper Thiago Silva.

The referee pointed to the spot and Van Persie stepped up to find the top corner.

Hamas militants fire rockets at Tel Aviv after warning

Hamas militants launched two rounds of rocket attack on Tel Aviv Saturday night after a warning, causing no injury, according to the Israeli military.

Israel’s Iron Dome anti-missile system intercepted three rockets above Tel Aviv’s metropolitan area, the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) said in a statement. About an hour later, the IDF said that the Israeli Air Force targeted the rocket launcher that was used to fire the barrage in Beit Lahiya in northern Gaza Strip, Xinhua reported.

Weeks after Gujarat reinstated IPS officer G L Singhal, one of the key accused in the 2004 Ishrat Jahan alleged fake encounter case, another accused policeman is back at work.

The suspension of constable Anaju Chaudhary, accused by the CBI of firing 10 rounds from a sten gun at Ishrat and three others, was revoked on July 2 by the state government. He has been posted to the State Reserve Police (SRP) camp in Godhra.

Newborn found dumped in drain in Andhra Pradesh

The body of a new born baby was on Saturday found dumped in a sewer in East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh, police said.

The body was recovered in Ramachandrapuram area by police in the early hours after a lineman Venkateswara Rao from the electricity department saw the baby in the drain while he was climbing a nearby pole, they said.

Seven infant deaths at Malda hospital in past 24 hours

Seven infants have died in past 24 hours at West Bengal’s Malda Medical College and Hospital, which witnessed frequent crib deaths in the recent past.

Hospital deputy superintendent Jyotish Das said the infants were aged between 0-28 days and had complaints of low birth weight, malnutrition and respiratory problems.

One of them died soon after delivery, while the rest had been referred to the hospital from public health centres of Baishnabnagar, Kaliachowk, Bamungola.

The government hospital had been in the news for the death of 23 infants due to a unspecified illness in June.
