Man slits wife’s throat, injures himself in Delhi

After a heated argument over an issue, a man Sunday slit his wife’s throat with a sharp-edged instrument and later injured himself, police said.

The incident was reported around 8 p.m. from Munirka area of south Delhi.

The couple – identified as Kripa and her husband Ram Kumar from Darjeeling in West Bengal – were admitted to a hospital.

Army chief visits Northern Command HQ

Army chief Gen. Bikram Singh Sunday visited the Northern Command headquarters at Udhampur near here and paid tributes at the war memorial, a defence statement said.

Gen. Singh, who is on a two-day farewell visit to Jammu and Kashmir, was accompanied by his wife Bubbles Singh, the president of the Army Wives Welfare Association (AWWA).

“At Udhampur, Gen. Bikram Singh paid homage to the martyrs at Dhruva War Memorial,” the statement said.

“He addressed all ranks and was accorded a warm farewell by troops of northern command headquarters.

Daily train from Delhi to Katra from tomorrow

Railways will introduce from Monday a daily train service from here to Katra, the base camp for pilgrims visiting the Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine.

The AC superfast ‘Shri Shakti Express’ will depart from New Delhi station at 5:30 PM daily and arrive at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra station at 5:10 AM the next day.

Similarly, in the return direction, it will depart from there at 10:55 PM daily and reach here at 10:45 AM the next day, a Northern Railway statement said.

Trent Bridge Test ends in a draw

The first cricket Test here ended in a draw as India took a massive 430-run lead after they made 387 for eight in the second innings against England on the fifth and final day against England here Sunday.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar was batting on 63, his second half-century of the match, and Mohammad Shami four, when both the teams decided to settle for a draw.

India drew their first cricket Test with England thanks to some heroics from Stuart Binny, Ravindra Jadeja and Bhuvneshwar Kumar on the final day at the Trent Bridge here Sunday.

AIIMS doctors go on strike after three colleagues were assaulted

Three senior resident doctors at AIIMS were on Sunday allegedly assaulted by a patient’s relatives following which doctors at the premier hospital went on an indefinite strike demanding adequate security measures.

The doctors alleged that those accompanying the patient to the Surgical Emergency of the institute brandished guns and created a ruckus before beating up the three doctors, who were on duty, and fleeing the hospital campus in an SUV by breaking the main gate of AIIMS.

Names of five senior BJP leaders, including former Petroleum Minister Ram Naik, have been firmed up by the government for appointment as Governors in states including Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka and Gujarat, highly placed sources said on Sunday.

Former Uttar Pradesh Speaker Kesri Nath Tripathi, senior BJP leader from Delhi VK Malhotra, former Bhopal MP Kailash Joshi and senior party leader from Punjab Balaram Das Tandon are said to be the other four persons whose names have been recommended for appointment as Governors.

Indian athletes hoping for a better show in Commonwealth Games

The first batch of India’s 26-member track and field squad will leave for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games Monday hoping to replicate the success they had on home soil four years ago.

Chief coach Bahadur Singh said this will provide ample opportunity for acclimatisation to the Indian track and field stars.

“We will be reaching Glasgow a fortnight in advance before the athletics competition begins July 27. Within two-three days of our arrival, the athletes will be at ease with the weather condition,” he said here Sunday.

Abbas requests UN protection for Palestinians

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas Sunday asked the United Nations for international protection to the Palestinian people amid escalating Israeli offensive on the Gaza Strip.

In a meeting in Ramallah between Mahmoud Abbas and Robert Serry, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon’s envoy to the Middle East, Abbas handed Serry an official letter asking for UN protection for the Palestinians, Xinhua reported.

Abbas said the unabated Israeli aggression on the Palestinian people was unbearable and patience was running out for what Israel is doing against Palestinian people.

Israel navy raids Gaza defying UN truce call as toll climbs to 165

Israeli navy commandos raided Gaza in a first ground assault on the strip Sunday, stepping up its six-day offensive even as the UN called for a ceasefire between the two sides.

It is the first time that the Israeli military acknowledged having entered the Gaza Strip since the deadly air campaign, dubbed ‘Operation Protective Edge’, began last Tuesday, Xinhua reported.

A military spokesperson said the site of the Israeli ground incursion was being used as a launching site for long-range attacks against Israeli civilians.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi Sunday reached Berlin on his way to Brazil to attend the five-nation BRICS summit.

“Reached Berlin en route to Brazil to attend BRICS summit,” Modi tweeted.

The Sixth BRICS Summit, being held in Fortaleza and capital Brasilia July 15-16, is expected to see finalisation of the process of setting up of the long-discussed BRICS bank — a major initiative of the grouping that together represents 18 percent of global trade.

Communal clash in Jammu, Srinagar highway blocked

Groups of two communities clashed here Sunday over a land dispute, torching three vehicles and vandalising nearly a dozen others, and blocking traffic on the busy Jammu-Srinagar highway, police said.

Clashes erupted between members of the two communities over a piece of land measuring around 42 acres in Bari Brahmana industrial estate, 15 km from Shaheedi Chowk.

The annual wrestling event scheduled to be held at this place could not be held as members of one community said they would not allow it since the land where the event was scheduled belonged to them.

Rival groups clash at Libya’s main airport, six killed

Armed clashes broke out at Libya’s busiest airport in capital Tripoli Sunday, killing six people and injuring 25 others, a health ministry official said.

Intense gunfire was constantly heard for a few hours after some big explosions, Xinhua reported citing a resident as saying.

Sources said the fight erupted between the Islamist armed groups and militia from south-western Libyan city of Zintan that controls the airport.

Both sides claimed to have taken control of the air hub on their websites.

Five killed by lightning in Bengal

At least five people were killed and two others seriously injured after they were struck by lightning in West Bengal’s Burdwan district Sunday, police said.

According to Superintendent of Police S.M.H. Meerza, all the victims were working in a field when they were hit by lightning.

The injured have been admitted to Burdwan Medical College and Hospital.

Meanwhile, the wife of one of the victims tried to commit suicide by consuming poison following the death of her husband.

“She is currently undergoing treatment,” said Meerza.

Ashok Chavan failed to lodge election expenses as per law: EC

In fresh trouble for former Maharashtra chief minister Ashok Chavan, the Election Commission on Sunday slapped a show cause notice on him for failing to lodge his election expenses as per law in a paid news case and asked him why he should not be disqualified.

Setting a 20-day deadline to respond to the notice, the Commission said he has “failed to lodge his account of election expenses in the manner required by the (Representation of the People) Act and rules.”

Death toll now 13 in Casablanca buildings collapse

The death toll after three buildings collapsed in Morocco’s largest city and commercial capital Casablanca rose to 13 today, officials said.

“Five bodies were recovered from the rubble including two children and Moroccan actress Amal Maarouf and her mother,” they said, quoted by the MAP news agency.

The toll from Friday’s tragedy could still increase “because there are people under the rubble”.

A previous provisional toll yesterday spoke of eight dead and some 60 injured, with 17 still in hospital.

France urges ceasefire in ‘disastrous’ Israel, Gaza conflict

France’s foreign minister called today for an immediate ceasefire in Israel and the Gaza Strip, where a deadly six-day conflict is escalating in what he said was an “absolutely disastrous” way.

“In Gaza and in Israel, the absolute priority is a ceasefire,” Laurent Fabius told reporters in Vienna, where he
was gathering with his Western counterparts to discuss Iran’s controversial nuclear programme in a meeting that was also due to touch on the Gaza offensive.

German, Italian foreign ministers heading to Middle East

The foreign ministers of Germany and Italy were due in the Middle East this week amid an escalating conflict between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip, officials said today.

I can confirm that Foreign Minister (Frank-Walter) Steinmeier will travel in the Middle East tomorrow and the day
after,” a ministry spokeswoman told AFP as diplomatic efforts to halt the bloodshed intensified.

She declined to provide further details.
