VHP leader Giriraj Kishore dead

ishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader Giriraj Kishore, one of the key members of the Ram Janmabhoomi movement, died here Sunday, a VHP leader said. He was 95.

One of the seniormost ‘pracharaks’ of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Kishore was ill for some time.

“He died at 9.25 p.m. at the VHP headquarters. He was ill for some time but remained actively involved in the affairs of the organisation till his last day,” VHP spokesperson Vinod Bansal told IANS.

“He was one of the pioneers of the Ram Janmabhoomi movement,” he said.

Over 130 Sunni militants killed in Iraq

At least 133 Sunni militants were Sunday killed in fierce clashes with security forces across Iraq, officials said.

The clashes with the Sunni militants, claiming to be from the Islamic State (IS), took place in al-Qadsiyah district in Tikrit.

At least 41 militants were killed and 26 of their vehicles destroyed, Xinhua quoted military spokesman Qasim Atta as saying in Baghdad.

The militants were trying to take hold of the district to use it as a launching pad to seize Tikrit, he said.

93 killed in Uganda tribal attacks

At least 93 people were killed, including 10 security officers, in tribal attacks in the western part of Uganda, police said Sunday.

The July 5 tribal attacks and criminal activities in Kasese, Ntoroko and Bundibugyo districts resulted into the loss of 93 lives and property worth millions of shillings, Xinhua quoted police spokesperson Polly Namaye as saying in a statement.

Inspector General of Police Kale Kayihura has since camped in the Mount Rwenzori region to bring an end to criminal activities and coordinate the arrests of culprits.

VHP leader Giriraj Kishore passes away

Senior Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader Giriraj Kishore, who was actively associated with the Ram temple agitation, died here this evening following prolonged illness. He was 94.

“He was ailing for some time now. He died peacefully at the VHP headquarters in RK Puram at 9.15 pm,” VHP Delhi unit spokesperson Vinod Bansal said.

Wheelchair-bound Giriraj was suffering from prostrate cancer for some years, senior VHP functionary Rajinder Pankaj said.

Like on other days, Giriraj got up at 3 AM today and was given a bath, he said, adding his condition deteriorated during the day.

Building collapses: Centre thinking of fixing responsibility

In the wake of building collapses in the country, Centre was thinking of fixing responsibility on local authority for illegal constructions, Urban Development and Housing Minister Venkaiah Naidu said on Sunday.

“There has to be accountability to deal with such issues (illegal construction and building collapse). If people, local building inspectors, area supervisors or town planner who are working in that particular area is held accountable, things will improve. That is the thinking of the government,” he told reporters here.

Egypt court acquits Morsi-era PM

An Egyptian court Sunday acquitted former prime minister Hesham Qandil of charges of law violation for not carrying out a court order.

Qandil, who served during the one-year rule of ousted president Mohamed Morsi, was earlier sentenced to one year jail-term for violating a court order to terminate the privatisation contract of a state-owned company, Xinhua reported citing MENA news agency.

The Court of Cassation overturned the verdict and acquitted the Islamist-oriented ex-prime minister.

Man held for raping woman in Delhi hotel

An assistant manager with Delhi power discom BSES was Sunday arrested for raping a 20-year-old woman at gun-point inside a hotel here after luring her on the pretext of a job interview, police said.

The woman made a call to the police control room (PCR) at 2.16 p.m. and said she was raped inside a hotel room in Mahipalpur area of south Delhi.

Kishan Dabas, a 45-year-old assistant manager with the BSES, was arrested from the hotel room, police said.

A licensed pistol used by the man during the offence has been seized, they said.

Monsoon advancing to North India, Gujarat, Rajasthan

Many parts of northern India including the national capital as well as central and north-western states received showers on Sunday, bringing cheer to the region where monsoon is likely to progress this week after scanty rains had sparked fears of drought.
