A study has revealed that the general and emotional intelligence are also a contribution of the brain parts that helps with the optimal social functioning, linking intelligence to social context of life.

Aron Barbey, the lead author said that they were trying to understand the nature of general intelligence and to what extent human’s intellectual abilities were grounded in social cognitive abilities.

Employment rises 34 pc to 12.7 cr in 8 years to 2013

The number of employed persons in the country grew by 34.35 per cent to 12.77 crores in eight years to 2013, according to the Sixth Economic Census.

Employment in urban parts increased by 37.46 per cent to 6.14 crores in 2013, whereas in rural areas the growth was 31.59 per cent to 6.62 crores compared to 2005.

The proportion of women in total workforce rose to 25.56 per cent in 2013 from about 20 per cent in 2005. In urban areas, the proportion of female workers was 19.8 per cent and 30.9 per cent in rural areas.

16 ex-ministers of UPA government served eviction notice; to pay 21 lakhs

Sixteen former ministers of the UPA government are staying unauthorized in government bungalows for over a month now and have been served eviction notices, the Lok Sabha was told on Wednesday.

These former ministers owe a total damage charges of Rs. 20,92,463 for one month of unauthorised stay till July 26, urban development minister Venkaiah Naidu said in a written reply.

With tomato prices soaring up to Rs 80 per kg, the government is keeping a close watch on rising rates of the vegetable and also taking necessary steps.

The prices of tomato are continuously moving up with the onset of monsoon due to strained supplies and higher wholesale prices in key producing states.

“We are keeping a close watch on tomato prices and also monitoring the movement (of prices), whatever steps we can take, we are taking those steps,” Consumer Affairs Secretary Keshav Desiraju told PTI.

Supreme Court asks Supertech to refund principal amount to investors

The Supreme Court on Wednesday asked real estate major Supertech to give back within a month the principal amount to those allottees who had applied for refund.

The apex court has also asked Supertech to allot alternate flats to other allottees, who do not want to get a refund.

The case involves refunding of money to flat owners of Apex and Ceyane towers in Noida which were directed to be demolished by Allahabad High Court.

Supertech will tell the court about its options post lunch today.

UP horror continues: Minor girl gang-raped by five youths in Mathura

A minor girl was allegedly gang-raped by five youths near a school here, police said on Wednesday.

The incident took place on Tuesday afternoon under the Sadar Bazar police station.

“The accused will be nabbed shortly. The medical examination of the girl has been conducted and she has been sent for test to Agra,” SSP Nitin Tewari said.

The girl had gone near the school with a boy known to her family.

In the FIR, the girl has alleged that the five youths came there and overpowered them. They then beat up the boy and forced him to leave the spot.

Pune landslide: 23 dead, rescuers in frantic efforts to save 160 trapped in debris

At least 23 people were killed when landslides, triggered by relentless rains, struck a village in Pune district, burying over 160 as rescuers looked for survivors and bodies in the mud-and-rock debris battling rough weather.

As many as 400 National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel are engaged in rescue efforts at Malin village, the scene of the tragedy in Ambegaon taluka, some 120km from the district headquarters here in Western Maharashtra.

President Pranab Mukherjee condoled loss of lives in the landslides triggered by heavy rains in Malin village of Pune district’s Ambegaon tehsil earlier this morning.

In his message to Maharashtra Governor K. Sankaranarayanan, Mukherjee said, “I am deeply saddened to learn about the landslides triggered by heavy rains in Maharashtra’s Pune District, in which a number of persons have lost their lives and many others are feared trapped under the debris. I understand rescue and relief operations are currently underway.”

Heavy rainfall in Gujarat’s Valsad district resulted in water logging on Wednesday.

People in the area faced difficulty in commuting as the water rose to knee level resulting in heavy traffic jams.

Earlier today, Ahmadabad also suffered from water logging to heavy rainfall thereby disrupting normal life.

Despite the problems of water logging, traffic jams, power cuts and delayed flights, the farmers in Gujarat have welcomed the showers. (ANI)

Australian weightlifter Francois Etoundi is reportedly the athlete who has been arrested and charged with assault over an incident in the Commonwealth Games village in Glasgow on Wednesday morning.

Weightlifting bronze-medallist Francois Etoundi was reportedly arrested at the athletes’ village at 6 a.m. on Wednesday morning.

Etoundi is due to appear before a Glasgow Sheriffs Court on Thursday.

Etoundi, who was born in Cameroon but lives in Victoria, is competing at his third Games here in Glasgow and won his first Commonwealth medal in the 77kg class last Sunday.

Nadal ruled out with wrist injury for up to three weeks

Spanish tennis star Rafael Nadal has suffered a right wrist injury less than a month before the start of the U.S. Open in New York, and has been ruled out of action for two to three weeks.

Nadal hurt his wrist while training on Tuesday, reports the BBC.

Nadal, 28, said that he was extremely disappointed not to be defending his titles in Toronto and Cincinnati as he targets a return to fitness in time for the U.S. Open, which starts on August 25.

Nadal has not competed since his shock defeat by Australian teenager Nick Kyrgios in the fourth round at Wimbledon on July 1 this year.

South African prosecutors file final arguments in Oscar Pistorius case

Prosecutors have filed their final arguments before the high court in the case of murder accused Oscar Pistorius.

According to News24, the final argument in the Pistorius’s murder trial will now be heard on August 7.

Paralympian Pistorius is on trial for shooting dead his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on February 14 last year.

He claims he shot her by accident through the locked door of his toilet in his Pretoria home, thinking she was an intruder about to emerge and attack him.

The State (prosecutors) contends he killed her during an argument.

England close in on series leveling win against India in Rose Bowl Test

England moved closer to levelling the series against India with another dominant display on day four of the third Test in Southampton.

Chasing a notional 445 to win, India was reduced to 112-4 at the close, with Moeen Ali taking two wickets and Joe Root one.

According to the BBC, England could have ended the day in an even stronger position had James Anderson clung on to a difficult return chance off Rohit Sharma, who remains unbeaten on six, alongside Ajinkya Rahane (18 not out).

Kallis retires from International cricket

South African all-rounder Jacques Kallis, who retired from Test cricket last December, has decided to end his one-day international career.

Kallis, 38, made his decision after scoring only five runs from his final three ODIs in Sri Lanka this month, reports the BBC.

However, he intends to continue playing Twenty20 cricket for Sydney Thunder and Kolkata Knight Riders.

Kallis said that he had hoped to play for South Africa in next year’s cricket World Cup, but realized after his performance in Sri Lanka, that it was a “bridge too far” to cross.

Jadeja allowed to appeal against ICC fine involving spat with England’s Anderson

Indian all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja will be allowed to appeal against a fine for his part in an incident involving England’s James Anderson, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced.

All-rounder Jadeja was fined 50 percent of his match fee for misconduct in a confrontation with Anderson during the drawn first Test in Nottingham on July 10.

According to Sport24, ICC regulations prevented Jadeja contesting his fine after match referee David Boon, the former Australia batsman, downgraded his offence to Level One under the ICC’s code of conduct.

The main accused for instigating clashes in Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh which left three people killed and dozens injured has been arrested along with six of his accomplices, police said Thursday.

Moharram Ali allegedly incited a mob to pelt stones and fire at the Sikhs and had opened fire at Sahastra Pal, a constable who is battling for his life in a city hospital.

Danish, Mohd Irshad, Mohd Abid, Mohd Shahid and Haji Mohammed Irfan have also been arrested for inciting and abetting violence. Violent clashes had erupted between the Sikha and Muslims in Saharanpur last week.

US House approves lawsuit against Obama

The US House Wednesday approved a lawsuit against President Barack Obama over alleged abuse of executive power.

The 225-201 vote fell along party lines, with five Republicans voting against the measure while no Democrats supported it, Xinhua reported.

Last Thursday, the House Rules Committee approved at 7-4 vote a resolution allowing the full House to vote on authorizing the lawsuit against Obama, accusing him of abusing executive authority.

Govt. of Telangana is persuading industrialists to setup their units in the State but the chances of taking Nizam Sugar Factory of Bodhan in Govt. control seem to be bleak. The formers producing sugarcane are disappointed. In 2002, TDP Govt. had given the three units of NSF situated in Shakkar Nagar, Metpalli and Medak to private parties. In 2004 Congress assumed power, Mr. KCR was given labour portfolio in Central Govt. which sent a good message to the farmers of NSF. It may be noted that in 2002, many employees of NSF were forcibly made to retire.

Mallika Sherawat in trouble for insulting Tri-color again

The controversial Tri color depiction in the first look of `Dirty Politics` has come under fire again as human rights activist, T. Dhangopal Rao, went to court against it in the city.

The activist has moved the Hyderabad High Court seeking action against Bollywood actress Mallika Sherawat for allegedly obscenely using the Indian tricolour in her upcoming film. He submitted that the actress and producer, Kastoor Chand Bokadia, had intentionally humiliated the national flag by using it obscenely in the film’s first-look poster.
