A man in Odisha was Saturday sentenced to seven years in jail for possessing fake Indian currency notes with a face value Rs.28,000, police said.

The court of the second additional sessions judge in Cuttack, 25 km from state capital Bhubaneswar, also ordered Sanjay Kumar Biswal to pay a fine of Rs.5,000 after pronouncing him guilty, a police official told IANS.

The police crime branch registered a case against Biswal Sep 3, 2012, after he was found in possession of 16 fake notes of Rs.500 denomination and 20 fake notes of Rs.1,000 denomination.

Documentary on economic, health impact of tobacco

In a bid to highlight the harmful impact of tobacco use, the ministry of health and family welfare along with the World Lung Foundation has unveiled a documentary that shows the effect of tobacco on the lives of Indian citizens.

The documentary named “The Price We Pay”, launched on the eve of World Tobacco day (May 31), features interviews of several victims of tobacco-related diseases. Patients and their families speak about how poverty can inflict a family when the main breadwinner dies due to such diseases.

China’s efforts in MH370 search unprecedented: Malaysian PM

China and Malaysia Saturday vowed to continue the underwater search for the missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 “until it is found”.

“Both sides agreed to continue to work closely together in the sub-surface search operation for the missing flight in the southern Indian Ocean off the west coast of Australia,” Xinhua quoted a joint statement issued by the two countries as saying.

The Chinese side welcomes Malaysia’s commitment to continue the search until it is found, the statement said.

Astronomers say hello to ‘vintage’ spacecraft lost 35 years ago

A “vintage” sun explorer NASA spacecraft lost in space early in 1980s has now been established contact with by a group of private space science enthusiasts.

“Our team has established two-way communication with the International Sun-Earth Explorer-3 (ISEE-3) spacecraft and has begun commanding it to perform specific functions,” scientists associated with the “ISEE-3 Reboot Project” were quoted as saying.

In 1982, the ISEE-3 satellite was pulled away from its solar mission and joined a mini international race to make the first encounter with Halley’s comet.

Merkel backs Luxembourg’s ex-PM for European Commission president

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has backed Luxembourg’s former premier Jean-Claude Juncker to become the next European Commission leader, a British daily reported Saturday.

“I will now lead all negotiations in the spirit that Jean-Claude Juncker should become president of the European Commission,” The Guardian quoted Merkel as saying at the National Catholic Congress in Regensburg.

The move has dealt a blow to British Prime Minister David Cameron’s attempts to block Juncker from taking up the role.

PML-N lawmaker, ISI official abducted by Pak Taliban

A ruling PML-N legislator and an ISI official were allegedly kidnapped by the Taliban from Pakistan’s Punjab province on Saturday.

Rana Jameel Hasan was going to Islamabad along with his wife when unidentified gunmen intercepted his car and abducted him near Pindi Bhattian, some 150 km from Lahore, police said.

The kidnappers blindfolded the couple and took them away to a deserted area. They freed Hasan’s wife with a message to arrange Rs 5 crore ransom.

They threatened Hasan’s wife with serious consequences in case the payment is not made in two days’ time.

How green tea helps cure pancreatic cancer

A new study has revealed how green tea and its extracts might be able to help fight the cancer risks as well as some other diseases.

The study has found that EGCG, the active biologic constituent in green tea, changed the metabolism of pancreatic cancer cells by suppressing the expression of an enzyme associated with cancer, LDHA.

Researchers also found that an enzyme inhibitor, oxamate, which is known to reduce LDHA activity, also disrupted the pancreatic cancer cells metabolic system.

4 killed, 11 injured as speeding lorry mows down passengers

Four persons were killed and 11 others injured today when a speeding lorry hit people, who had alighted from a mini-van after it developed a snag in Tirupur district, police said.

Some 25 persons were returning after attending a condolence meet when the mishap occurred at Vallikkadu, about 80 km from here.

They had got down and were waiting for some other vehicle, when the lorry mowed them down, police said.

The injured have been admitted to a hospital.

Woman sells newborn daughter in Bengal

(IANS) Forced by abject poverty, a woman sold her newborn daughter for Rs.13,000 to a childless couple in West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri district, an official said Saturday.

The baby born May 25 has been now rescued and is in the care of the district Child Welfare Committee (CWC).

“The mother is a slum dweller and begs for a living. She sold the newborn – her fourth child – for Rs. 13,000. After we got to know about it, we traced the baby and she is now under the care of CWC,” an official of the district social welfare department told IANS.

Army hero calls Gwyneth Paltrow ‘mentally weak’ for comparing cyber-bullying to war

Green Beret Bryan Sikes, a member of the United States Army Special Forces slammed Gwyneth Paltrow for her recent comparing online harassment to war, calling her and her friends “mentally weak”.

In a guest column for Clash Daily, a website founded by conservative author Doug Giles, Sikes mocked the 41-year-old star saying that her comparison was a perfect nail hit on the head, and that she should get a medal, Us Magazine reported.

Lightning kills nine in Bengal

At least nine people were killed and a dozen injured by lightning in different parts of West Bengal Saturday, police said.

According to police, three people were killed in Hariharpara, two in Raghunathganj in Murshidabad district, one each in Khandaghosh and Raniganj in Burdwan district and two in Baghmundi Purulia district after they were struck by lightning.

In West Midnapore district’s Chandrakona, at least 12 people were injured in a lightning strike while they were working in a field.

After over 60 years of Urdu coming to an end to be a language of higher education at Osmania University (OU), the Maulana Azad National Urdu University (Manuu) is in the process of introducing it as a medium for bachelor and masters degrees in technical education.

The Maulana Azad National Urdu University (Manuu) was set up by the Central government in 1996. It was in 1949 that English replaced Urdu as a medium of instruction in Osmania University after about a quarter century.

AP Government makes provisional allocation of buildings in Hyderabad

With just two days left behind for the separate Telangana and (new) Andhra Pradesh states to come into existence, on Friday, the AP government made provisional allocation of several buildings which would house the Legislative Assembly, Legislative Council, and Secretariat to the two successor states.

The A, B, C and D Blocks on the existing Secretariat premises have been allocated for Telangana and J, K, L, H (South) and H (North) blocks for Andhra Pradesh. The AP government also allocated provisionally the office space to the departments of Secretariat of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
