Sharif, Modi meeting hints at peace, trouble: Pakistani daily

The meeting between Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and India’s Premier Narendra Modi hints “at the prospects for peace and the likelihood of trouble in the months ahead”, said a Pakistani daily Wednesday.

The editorial “A new page?” appeared in the News International a day after Sharif and Modi met at New Delhi. Sharif along with other SAARC leaders attended the swearing-in ceremony of Modi Monday.

UP train crash toll rises to 28, probe begins Thursday

The toll in two trains’ collision in Uttar Pradesh’s Sant Kabir Nagar district has risen to 28 and a probe into the accident will begin Thursday.

Chief Commissioner of Safety (Railways) Prabhat Kumar Bajpayi would be arriving at the site of Gorakhdham Express-goods train collision in Sant Kabir Nagar Thursday and begin investigating the reasons that led to it.

The toll in the accident rose to 28 with the discovery of the badly mauled body of the assistant driver of the train.

BJP protests power outages in UP

The BJP’s Uttar Pradesh unit has upped its ante on power outages in the state and decided to hold a string of protests against the Samajwadi Party government.

The party, in the first phase, has begun holding protests across 75 districts of the state Wednesday.

The protests would continue Friday also against the grim power scenario in the state.

The statewide protests are being led by district BJP presidents and will demand an end to unscheduled power rostering and improvement of power generation and transmission.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh meets RSS leadership: TV report

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday met with leaders of the Rashtriya Swayam Sewak Sangh (RSS).

According to a Times Now television channel report, this was Singh’s first meeting with the RSS leadership after assuming charge of the Union Home Ministry.

According to the channel report, it is not known as yet as to what transpired between Singh and the RSS leadership, which included RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, at the RSS headquarters here.

Singh is also the president of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Further details are awaited. (ANI)

Modi pays tribute to Veer Savarkar

Prime Minister Narendra Modi Wednesday paid tributes to freedom fighter Veer Savarkar on his 131st birth anniversary.

“Tributes to Veer Savarkar on his birth anniversary. We remember and salute his tireless efforts towards the regeneration of our motherland,” Modi said in a tweet.

Modi added: “Veer Savarkar is remembered as a prolific writer, thinker, poet and a social reformer. Leaving for parliament to pay tributes to Veer Savarkar.”

People’s Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti criticized Minister of State in Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) Dr. Jitendra Singh over his recent statement calling for a debate on the contentious Article 370.

“Well I think it is very unfortunate of a minister who belongs to Jammu and Kashmir and has seen the bloodshed and suffering of the people to make such a statement. He (Jitendra Singh) has no better thing to do on the very first day of his ministry and rakes up an issue where he has no control,” said Mufti.

Minister says process on for repealing article 370, backtracks

Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) Jitendra Singh Tuesday stirred up controversy after declaring the new government has started the process for repealing Article 370, which grants special status to Jammu and Kashmir. He later said he was misquoted by the media.

“The process of repealing article 370 has started. We are speaking to the stakeholders,” Jitendra Singh told TV news channel CNN-IBN.

South Sudan fighting uproots 70,000 in three weeks

The UN refugee agency said Tuesday that more than 70,000 South Sudanese have fled to safety in three weeks after a truce was signed in Addis Ababa May 9.

According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), recent arrivals say they fled violence in Jonglei and Upper Nile states, particularly the area around Mathiang in Longechuk county of Upper Nile state, Xinhua reported.

“Ethiopia currently hosts the largest South Sudanese refugee population at 131,051 people, mostly women and children,” UNHCR said in a statement.
