SRK revels in KKR’s win at Eden

The Eden Gardens erupted in celebrations as home team Kolkata Knight Riders steamrolled Kings XI Punjab in the Qualifier 1 match of the seventh edition of Indian Premier League (IPL) to enter the finals.

Leading from the front, team owner and Bollywood Badshah Shah Rukh Khan went for the victory lap with the knights, as fans went wild with slogans of ‘SRK SRK”, “Shah Rukh, Shah Rukh”.

The teammates hugged each other and thumped skipper Gautam Gambhir while a few fans spilled onto the ground.

29 killed in Iraq attacks

A total of 29 people were killed and 72 others wounded in separate shootings and bombings across Iraq Wednesday, police said.

The deadliest of the attacks happened in Iraq’s capital Baghdad in the afternoon when a suicide bomber rammed his explosives-laden car into a police checkpoint and blew it up in the northern district of Kadhmiyah, leaving at least 12 dead and some 52 others wounded, a police source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

The huge blast set fire some 15 cars and badly damaged many others, the source said, adding that most of the victims were civilians.

Haryana to take up high toll taxes with Centre

The Haryana government Wednesday said it will take up with the central government the issue of high toll taxes being imposed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) on highways in the state.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the Haryana cabinet here.

“The cabinet Wednesday decided to take up the issue of high toll charges imposed by National Highways Authority of India with the central government, particularly in those areas where the toll was determined under the 2008 toll policy,” a state government spokesman said.

Gambhir’s performance a boost for Knight Riders: Akram

Pakistan hails Obama’s Afghan withdrawal plan

Pakistan Wednesday welcomed US President Barack Obama’s plan of withdrawal of forces from Afghanistan, noting that the country stressed the importance of a responsible withdrawal and “cautioned against the creation of a security vacuum”.

The statement came hours after President Obama said that the US plans to pull out all forces from Afghanistan by 2016 and will begin with reducing the troop presence in the country to only 9,800. The US will end its combat mission at the close of 2014.

Russia ready to send humanitarian aid to Ukraine

Russia Wednesday expressed its readiness to send humanitarian aid to Ukraine’s eastern regions, and said it expected a prompt response from Kiev to facilitate the deliveries.

“Russia receives insistent pleas from the conflict zones in eastern Ukraine for urgent humanitarian aid,” the Russian foreign ministry said in a statement.

Noting that the ongoing military operation in those regions had led to numerous casualties, Russia urged Ukrainian authorities to undertake all measures to provide aid delivery promptly, Xinhua reported citing the statement.

JK Tyre net profit rises 29 percent
