Libyan warplanes bomb militias in Benghazi

Warplanes belonging to Libya’s “coup” general Khalifa Haftar Wednesday launched an air strike on Jihadist militia bases in Benghazi city, military officials said.

Two fighters bombed the February 17 Brigade militia compound and the Ansar al-Sharia militant base in Libya’s second largest city Benghazi, witnesses said. The two militia groups under attack did not disclose their casualties and damages.

The attacks came weeks after Haftar and his allied armed forces launched “Operation Dignity” to “purge terrorists.”

29 girls from poor families get government funds to marry

A total of 29 girls from poor families in the hilly Ramban district of Jammu and Kashmir were Wednesday given financial assistance from local authorities for solemnizing their marriages.

Ramban’s District Magistrate M.H. Malik distributed Rs.8.5 lakh among 29 matriculate girls from BPL (below poverty line families) families at a simple function, organized by the state social welfare department, in Ramban.

The district social welfare officer said these unmarried girls had applied under a welfare scheme during March this year for financial assistance.

Zardari acquitted in corruption case

The accountability court Wednesday acquitted former Pakistani president Asif Ali Zardari in the polo ground corruption case, a media report said.

The court said in its verdict that the accused had not been proven guilty so far, Dawn online reported Wednesday.

The court stated that evidence against Zardari was not sufficient for further proceedings.

IM operative sent to police custody till June 2

A court here Wednesday sent to police custody, till June 2, Indian Mujahideen (IM) operative Faizan Ahmed Sultan, who is an accused in the 2008 Delhi blasts.

Sultan was deported from Sharjah to Delhi May 2 and arrested here by the National Investigation Agency, which claimed that Sultan provided hiding places to the top leadership of the IM since 2008. His name was disclosed by an arrested IM operative and later by IM co-founder Yasin Bhatkal.

Nicolas Sarkozy came under fresh pressure over an election funding scandal today as France’s Socialist government demanded full disclosure of the former president’s campaign financing.

“In a presidential campaign there are clear rules about financing limits, so it is important now that a full disclosure is made,” said government spokesman Stephane Le Foll.

It was a statement made purely for political effect. The government has no say in the ongoing legal probes that have been linked to Sarkozy’s electoral campaigns, or on the body that oversees election financing.
