The Ukrainian government Friday launched a full-scale operation in the eastern town of Sloviansk, using aircraft and landing troops against pro-Russian activists even as Russia slammed the move.

Ukraine’s Interior Minister Arsen Avakov said gunmen shot down at least two army helicopters in Sloviansk, killing one pilot and capturing the other.

“The terrorists opened fire with heavy weapons against Ukrainian special units. A real battle with professional mercenaries is going on,” BBC quoted Avakov as saying.

Nine rebel checkpoints have also been seized, Avokhov added.

The house owner found her body and informed police.

Russia rules out retaliation over Ukraine’s flights ban

Russia Friday said its passenger planes were banned by Kiev from entering two eastern Ukrainian cities, but pledged not to strike back.

“The Federal Agency for Air Transportation has been informed that starting from May 2, Ukrainian authorities have unilaterally banned Russian airlines from fulfilling flights to the airports of Donetsk and Kharkov,” the agency said in a statement.

Delhi temperature continues to rise, cloudy Saturday expected

The mercury here continues to rise, with Friday’s maximum temperature three notches above average at 41.7 degrees Celsius. The Met office forecast a cloudy Saturday.

“The skies will become partly cloudy and the maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to hover around 41 and 26 degrees Celsius respectively,” said an India Meteorological Department (IMD) official.

The city is reeling under the intense heat and it experienced the hottest May 1 as well as April 29 since 2010 with the maximum temperature at 42.8 and 41 degrees Celsius respectively.

SC refers plea challenging SIMI ban renewal to larger bench

The Supreme Court Friday referred to a larger bench a petition challenging the latest renewal of the ban on the Student Islamic Movement of India (SIMI).

The bench of Chief Justice R.M. Lodha and Justice Kurian Joseph directed the listing of the matter before a larger bench of three judges, and said the matter would come up for hearing Aug 12.

The ban is in continuation of the same imposed on the organisation in 2001.

The petition by former SIMI member Humam Ahmad Siddiqui challenged the latest renewal of the ban on the organisation in February this year.

20 child labourers rescued in Delhi

Twenty child labourers were rescued from three different factories in the national capital, police said Friday.

The Delhi Police and the labour department with the help of NGO Bachpan Bachao Andolan (BBA) rescued the 20 children in multiple raids and three factories were also sealed Friday.

Eight boys were freed from a bindi-making unit in Nand Nagar, Shahdara in east Delhi and the rest, including a girl, were rescued from a nail polish and utensil polishing unit in Samaypur Badli industrial estate of west Delhi.

Congress is determined to prevent takeover by communal forces personified by one individual, the party said today, virtually scotching speculation that Rahul Gandhi would prefer that the party sits in the opposition rather than stitch a coalition government.

Afridi meets Musharaff

Pakistan’s flamboyant allrounder, Shahid Afridi today met former President General (retd) Pervez Musharraf to enquire about his ailing mother in Dubai.

Afridi dropped in at the residence of Musharraf’s daughter in Defence Housing Society and remained with the former head of the state for a while.

A photograph of the two was also released on the social network site.

“It was a courtesy visit to inquire about Musharraf Sahab’s mother’s health and we also discussed some cricket naturally,” Afridi told Geo News.

Method

•Chickpeas (kabuli chana),cooked 2 1/2 cups
•Spinach leaves (palak),chopped 1 medium bunch
•Cumin powder,roasted 1 teaspoon
•Red chilli powder 1 teaspoon
•Garlic cloves 4-5
•Jalapeno 4-5
•Salt to taste
•Gram flour 1 tablespoon
Method
1. Put chickpeas, cumin powder, red chilli powder, garlic cloves, jalapenos and salt in a blender and blend coarsely. Transfer the mixture into a bowl.
2. Add chopped spinach and mix well. Add gram flour and mix well.
3. Heat sufficient oil in a kadai.

The interrogation of suspected ISI agent Mohammed Zahir Hussain, arrested recently here, has brought out that he has been making attempts to establish a widespread network to carry out activities, including ciruculation of fake currrency in south India, police sources said.

The investigators were baffled when Hussain, a Sri Lankan national, disclosed about his recruitment drive to spread the ISI network, the sources said.

Nepal Airlines jet makes emergency landing in Kuala Lumpur

All 53 people on board a Nepalese Airlines jet escaped unhurt when the plane made an emergency landing today at the Kuala Lumpur Airport due to a technical problem.

Kathmandu-bound flight RA-416 Boeing 757 returned to Kuala Lumpur 45 minutes after it took off and landed safely, said Ramhari Sharma, the spokesperson of Nepal Airlines Corporation.

It is learnt that the problem occurred when the fan blade of the right engine of the aircraft vibrated.

An airline official said the aircraft is at the Kuala Lumpur Airport and all 53 people travelling in the flight are safe.

Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav on Friday hit back at Narendra Modi for the “56-inch chest” remark alluding to his father and SP supremo Mulayam Singh, saying the BJP prime ministerial candidate is the “biggest liar” with a “56-inch belly”.

“He is the biggest liar in the world. His campaign is based on lies.. he does not have a 56-inch chest but a 56-inch belly,” Yadav said while addressing an election rally at Kaiserganj.

“In politics what is needed is a big heart not a big chest,” he added.

I will not join BJP again, says Jaswant

Expelled BJP leader Jaswant Singh Friday ruled out the possibility of his rejoining the party even if it showed willingness to re-induct him.

Asked during a meet-the-press event here if he would consider an invitation to rejoin the Bharatiya Janata Party if the party so intended, Jaswant Singh said: “I will not join the BJP.”

He said he was a “swatantra” or independent leader now, but was not contemplating forming any independent political party.
