Despite EC order, minister’s pic remains on official website

The Ministry of Women and Child Development has still not followed the order of the Election Commission to remove the picture of its minister Krishna Tirath, contesting Lok Sabha polls here, from the official website.

The direction of the Commission was forwarded by Additional Secretary in the Cabinet Secretariat to all the Secretaries concerned asking them to follow the EC’s directions to this effect.

Sonia wants to keep Muslims poor: Modi

Pawan Kalyan criticises YS Rajasekhar Reddy over AP division

Actor-turned politician and Jana Sena Party leader Pawan Kalyan, who is supporting BJP’s PM nominee Narendra Modi, on Friday said the division of Andhra Pradesh was “taken up” by family members of former chief minister and Congress leader YS Rajasekhar Reddy.

“The division of Andhra Pradesh was taken (up) by Rajasekhar Reddy and his family members including (his son) Jaganmohan Reddy who is the president of YSR Congress Party, and not by Union Minister K Chiranjeevi,” Pawan said while addressing a well-attended rally in support of BJP-TDP alliance candidates at Subramanya Grounds here.

India successfully test-fires Akash missile

India Friday successfully test-fired its Akash medium-range surface-to-air missile from a defence base in Odisha for the second time in two days, an official said.

The indigenously-developed missile, with a 27-km range and an effective ceiling of 15 km, was test fired from the Integrated Test Range of Chandipur in the coastal district of Balasore, 230 km from Bhubaneswar.

Akash was earlier successfully tested a number of times within a week from the same defence base including one Thursday.

Won’t be part of government, says Rajnath

BJP president Rajnath Singh has indicated that he will not be part of the government if his party comes to power after the Lok Sabha election.

“I am the president of the party. My responsibilities have been fixed beforehand. When I wasn’t the president, I was in the government,” Rajnath Singh told NDTV.

“My responsibilities are already decided and I think, in the BJP, I have many colleagues who are capable who should be given a chance in the government,” he added.

Rajnath Singh categorically said Narendra Modi will be the prime minister if the party comes to power.

Seemandhra people in Hyderabad will be protected: Sonia

Congress president Sonia Gandhi Friday assured full protection to people of Seemandhra residing in Hyderabad, saying they are proud owners of the historical and modern city as much as anybody else.

“My party is committed to protect physical, social, cultural and financial interests of every single person residing in Hyderabad,” she told an election rally in this south coastal Andhra town.

Gandhi said it was enshrined in the Reorganisation Act that the governor will be responsible for the safety and security of the property and the people living in the common capital of Hyderabad.

CNG prices in Delhi hiked by Rs.2.95 a kg

The price of compressed natural gas (CNG) in the national capital was Friday hiked by Rs.2.95 per kg, and that of piped cooking gas (PNG) by Re.1 per standard cubic metre (scm) due to a rise in input cost.

CNG, whose price was last cut by Rs.14.90 per kg in February, will cost Rs.38.15 per kg from Saturday as against the current rate of Rs.35.20.

“We are constrained to revise the retail price of CNG and PNG mainly due to increase in the overall input cost of natural gas being sourced by us,” Indraprastha Gas Ltd (IGL) said.

Diplomacy only solution to Ukraine crisis: UN chief

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki- moon Friday reiterated his “grave concern” over the deteriorating situation in east and south Ukraine.

The UN chief also stressed that a “diplomatic solution was the only way out of this crisis.”

Ban made the remarks in a statement after Ukraine launched a military operation Friday against the eastern city of Slaviansk, which had been reportedly seized by pro-Russia forces, Xinhua reported.

“Escalating violence and reported further loss of life in the city…is a stark reminder of how dangerous the situation has become,” he said in the statement.

Hagel urges NATO members to raise defence spending

US Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel Friday renewed calls for members of NATO to increase defence spending, following Russia’s recent action in Ukraine.

Although NATO was about to end its combat mission in Afghanistan later this year, challenges today remind the members countries of “the enduring need for the alliance” and the need to strengthen it, Hagel said at an event in here on the NATO’s future.

2,500 feared dead following Afghan landslide: official

At least 2,500 people were feared dead in a landslide in the northern Afghan province of Badakhshan Friday, the provincial governor said.

“We estimate that more than 2,500 were missing. It is feared that most of the missing people were died as more than 20 meters of debris covered the houses in a small village,” Governor Shah Wali Adib told Xinhua.

The incident occurred in a village in Aab Bareek area of Argu district, four-hour drive from the provincial capital Faizabad city.

US reports first case of deadly MERS virus

The US reported Friday reported first case of the deadly Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS).

The patient, now was kept in an isolated place in an Indiana hospital after being diagnosed with the MERS virus, Xinhua reported citing the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said.

He is “in stable condition” and “is being well cared for, CDC said.

The patient began to experience respiratory symptoms, including shortness of breath, coughing, and fever April 27, and went to see doctors the next day and was then admitted to hospital.

Anthony Lake reappointed UNICEF chief

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon Friday reappointed Anthony Lake as head of the Unicef.

“Following consultations with the executive board of the UNICEF, the secretary-general was pleased to reappoint Lake as the executive director of Unicef,” UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric announced at a daily briefing.

Lake has been the sixth executive director of the UNICEF since May 1, 2010

Russia, Ukraine agree on normal gas transit until May end

EU energy commissioner, energy ministers from Russia and Ukraine agreed that gas transit to Ukraine would not suffer in any way until the end of May.

EU’s Energy Commissioner Guenther Oettinger, Russia’s Energy Minister Alexander Novak and Ukraine’s Energy Minister Jurij Prodan met here Friday to discuss the Russia-Ukraine gas crisis, Xinhua reported

Oettinger stated at a press conference that the meeting had been a positive one where an agenda had been constructed for two further meetings in May.

“Both sides showed good will and neither wanted further escalation,” Oettinger said.

4 Indians win awards in Harvard’s contest

Four Indians are among the winners of a Harvard Business School competition that awards prizes to innovative business and social impact start-ups.

Harvard MBA student Amrita Siagal won the grand prize in the ‘Social Enterprise’ category for her venture ‘Saathi,’ which she co-founded with Oracle engineer Kristin Kagetsu. Saathi provides affordable sanitary pads made from waste banana tree fibre to women in rural India. Siagal and Kagetsu received a $50,000 prize.

Pak woman leaves for home with baby born in India

A Pakistani woman, who recently got clearance from her country’s High Commission to travel back to her home with son born in Jaisalmer, today left the city for Jodhpur to board the Thar Express to Karachi.

Mai Fatima was earlier denied permission to go to Pakistan along with her son because the child’s name did not figure on the parents’ passport. But she and her husband Meer Mohammed recently met Pakistan High Commission officials and got visa for the baby.

Obama threatens broader sanctions on Russia

US President Barack Obama said Friday that the US and Germany were prepared to impose broader sanctions on Russia if it continues to destabilise Ukraine.

“We will not have a choice but to move forward with additional, more severe sanctions,” if Russia disrupts Ukraine’s elections scheduled for May 25, Obama said at a joint news conference with visiting German Chancellor Angela Merkel at the White House, Xinhua reported.

22 yr old Housewife succumbs to accidental burn injuries

A 22 year old House wife died of burn injuries which she suffered on April 27 at her residence in old Malakpet.

According to Chaderghat police, the deceased Sana @ Anees Begum (22) a House Wife W/o Abdul Shafi Khan R/o Old Malakpet, caught fire while cooking on stove accidentally flames caught her on April 27. Immediately she was rushed to OGH for treatment where she was died on Thursday night hours.

Deceased Sana married with Abdul Shafi Khan about three months back.
