Former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Narayan Dutt Tiwari met his estranged woman companion Ujjwala Sharma Friday night after the Lucknow police intervened.

Sharma, 62, has filed a police complaint against the Congress leaders’s officer on special duty Bhawani Bhatt and security personnel for not allowing her to enter Tiwari’s house.

BJP complains to EC over Rahul Gandhi’s 22,000 deaths claim

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday filed a complaint with the Election Commission (EC) against Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi’s comment that if Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi becomes the prime minister of the country, then thousands of people will lose their lives.

“The statement was highly provocative and we have registered a complaint with the EC in this concern,” said BJP leader Ananth Kumar.

PM keeping close watch on Assam situation

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is keeping a close watch on the Assam situation in the wake of violence in two communally-sensitive districts of the state that has claimed at least 32 lives.

National Security Advisor Shivshankar Menon briefed Singh this morning on the situation, PMO sources said.

Singh then talked to Cabinet Secretary Ajit Seth and told him that all help should be extended to the state government to ensure peace.

Expressing deep anguish and sorrow over the killings, Congress President Sonia Gandhi had yesterday decried the role of sectarian and militant groups.

Srinagar curfew continues for third day

Curfew continued for the third day in seven areas of Jammu and Kashmir’s summer capital Srinagar Saturday though public transport ran and shops opened in some parts of the city.

As a preventive measure, the authorities continued the curfew in Rainawari, Khanyaar, Nowhatta, MR Gunj, Safakadal, Zadibal and Maisuma police station areas of the city.

No restrictions or curfew have been imposed in any other part of the city, a senior police officer told IANS.

Assam Violence: Nine more bodies recovered, death toll goes upto 32

Over nine more bodies were recovered on Saturday in militant attacks in Assam taking the death toll in the recent violence to 32.

Earlier, seven bodies were found in the Baksa district in Assam in an attack by suspected NDFB (Songbijit) militants in a village in Kokrajhar under Bodoland Territorial Administrative District (BTAD) of Assam.

Yesterday, there were reports of over seven people being killed in the attack.

Everest Climber Joby Ogwyn says deadly avalanche looked like big white dragon

Everest Climber Joby Ogwyn, who was about to take the big leap from the summit, has revealed that the deadly avalanche which claimed 16 lives “looked like a big white dragon.”

Ogwyn was laying in his tent at Base Camp in the early morning hours of April 18, the snow-and-ice capped peak of Mount Everest looming overhead, when he heard it – the familiar “creaking and groaning” sound of nearby glaciers cracking apart.

But something about the noise made the 39-year-old adventurer sit up, poke his head out the back of his tent and what he saw horrified him.

In the wake of a massive controversy over Narendra Modi’s interview to Doordarshan, Prasar Bharati CEO Jawhar Sircar on Friday acknowledged that certain portions of the Gujarat Chief Minister’s interview on Doordarshan “were apparently edited”.

Acknowledging that certain comments on personalities were apparently edited, the public broadcaster, which supervises the functioning of Doordarshan, said the free hand was given even though there were concerns that a “balancing interview” from the other side could not be procured despite best attempts of DD News.

Sun Pharma to shutter Detroit plant

Drug major Sun Pharmaceuticals will close its facility at Detroit as part of manufacturing consolidation.

The Workforce Development Agency for Michigan state has been notified about the decision to stop operations and close the Detroit plant, which belongs to subsidiary Caraco Pharmaceutical Laboratories, Sun Pharma said.

The generic drugmaker recently inked a $3.2 billion deal to buy Ranbaxy Laboratories.
“The company has provided the requisite advance written notice of the facility closure to the employee union and all affected employees,” it added.

Avocado diet could help cut heart disease risk among obese people

Researchers are exploring the potential effects of Hass avocado consumption on emerging cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors.

The research was based on a clinical study that investigated whether eating one Hass avocado every day as part of a moderate fat diet (34 percent fat) had a beneficial effect on risk factors for CVD among healthy overweight and obese subjects, compared to a similar moderate fat diet without avocados, and a lower fat diet.

350 killed in Afghan landslides (Lead)

At least 350 people were killed Friday after a series of landslides triggered by heavy rain hit Afghanistan’s Badakhshan district, said the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan.

“On behalf of the UN humanitarian agencies, I wish to extend our condolences to all those families who have lost loved ones as a result of these landslides. There have now been more Afghans killed through natural disasters in the past seven days than all of 2013,” Mark Bowden, UN humanitarian coordinator in Afghanistan said in a press release.

New element with atomic number 117 set to become reality

Researchers at the GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research, an accelerator laboratory located in Darm-stadt, Germany, have obtained evidence for the artificial creation of element 117.

The experiment was performed by an international team 72 scientists and engineers from 16 institutions in Australia, Finland, Germany, India, Japan, Norway, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States, headed by Prof. Christoph Dullmann, who holds positions at GSI, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU), and the Helmholtz Institute Mainz (HIM).

Seven more bodies recovered in Assam

At least seven more persons have been killed in militant attacks in Lower Assam, taking the death toll in the recent violence to 30.

As per reports, seven more bodies were recovered overnight in Baksa district. The death toll in the last 36 hours now stands at 30.

Till last night, 23 bodies had been recovered, including of children and women.

At least 14 others were seriously injured in attacks by heavily armed NDFB(S) militants in two communally-sensitive districts of Kokrajhar and Baksa.

Samsung ordered to pay Apple $119.6m for infringing patents

A US court has ordered Samsung to pay 119.6 million dollars to Apple for infringing two of their patents.

According to The BBC, the amount is less than 10 percent of what Apple requested and probably doesn’t surpass by too much the amount Apple spent litigating the case.

However, the court also ruled that Apple too infringed Samsung’s patents and awarded 158,000 dollars in damages, the report added.

Meanwhile, Samsung denied any wrongdoing and stated that Apple infringed two of their patents, and asked for 5 million dollars as damage s. (ANI)

Researchers have questioned the validity of oily fish being a part of a heart healthy diet.

This guideline is partially based on the landmark 1970s study from Bang and Dyerberg that connected the low incidence of coronary artery disease (CAD) among the Eskimos of Greenland to their diet, rich in whale and seal blubber. Financial Aid to Students under Vidya Sree Scheme

State Minister of Social Welfare of Karnataka Mr. H. Anjayya told that 50, 000 students will be given financial assistance under vidyasree scheme.
