Boko Haram releases four schoolgirls

Nigerian radical group Boko Haram has released four schoolgirls out of more than 200, who have been abducted and held captive since April 14, media reported Thursday citing sources.

According to sources in the Nigerian town of Chibuk, the Boko Haram let go of the four girls, while other sources believed that the girls managed to escape.

The Punch, a local daily newspaper, said the number of freed girls has risen to 75.

“Rain and thundershowers are likely to occur over mid and low hills of the state during the next three days,” an official of the India Meteorological Department here told IANS.

He said most of the prominent tourist destinations like Shimla, Dharamsala, Palampur, Manali, Kasauli, Kufri, Narkanda and Dalhousie are likely to witness intermittent rainfall till June 1, which will bring down temperatures to comfortable levels.

Himachal providing funds to restore ancient temples

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh Thursday said adequate funds were being provided to restore and maintain historical temples in the state.

He said the funds were being provided to restore the ancient temples in their original architecture.

Speaking to reporters after performing ritual ceremonies at the ancient Narain Temple in Rohru tehsil in Shimla district, he said the grant-in-aid to the temples had also been increased.

The temple was recently re-constructed by spending Rs.3 crore, temple officials said.

Entries invited for Rajiv Gandhi Sadbhavna award

The Congress advisory committee is seeking entries for the Rajiv Gandhi Sadbhavna award 2013, a statement by the All India Congress Committee said Thursday.

The award carries a citation and a cash prize of Rs.5 lakh. It is given to either individuals or institutions in recognition of their endeavour to promote communal harmony or fight terrorism and violence.

The entries should be sent latest by June 14 to the chairman of the advisory committee, Karan Singh, the statement added.

Doctor couple booked for carelessness in operating patient

A doctor couple was on Thursday booked for their alleged carelessness in operating a patient who died post the surgery, police said.

The FIR has been registered against Dr Chhavi Ojha and Dr Ramesh Ojha, who had operated one Phoolkumari, who died on May 27, they said.

The family members of the victim have alleged that she died due to carelessness of the doctor couple. On their complaint, police has lodged FIR against the two doctors. The doctors claimed that they were innocent, police said.

Sahara to sell assets in London, New York to raise money

The Sahara group Thursday told the Supreme Court that it was selling its three prime properties in London and New York to raise money to secure the release of Subrata Roy and two other directors.

The court, however, asked Sahara to place before it the communication it had exchanged with the Bank of China with which these properties were mortgaged.

The three hotels in which the Sahara group would be off-loading stakes are the Grosvenor House Hotel in London and the New York Plaza and Dream New York hotels.

India will release 30 fishermen and 5 civilian Pakistani prisoners on Thursday. The move by India comes after bilateral talks between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif.

12 killed in Afghanistan violence

Twelve people, including 10 militants, were killed in separate incidents of violence in Afghanistan Thursday, authorities said.

In one attack, a district intelligence chief was killed while three intelligence officials were wounded when a roadside bomb struck a vehicle in Aqcha district of northern Jawzjan province at noon, provincial police chief Faqir Mohammad Jawzjani told Xinhua.

Separately, police official Abdul Matin and a colleague were injured when a sticky bomb attached to a police jeep went off in Maehtarlam, the capital city of eastern Laghman province before noon.
