MERS virus can spread from camels to humans

The recently emerged Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV) can be transmitted from camel to man, it has been found.

Scientists at the University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna, show that the MERS coronaviruses in man and camels from a single region are almost identical.

The MERS coronavirus was first found in June 2012 in a patient from Saudi Arabia, who suffered from severe pneumonia.

The fact that the Arabian camel is the origin of the infectious disease has been confirmed recently. The transmission pathways of the viruses, however, have not been clear until now.

Chawla settles for bronze in Asian Snooker C’ship

Indian cueist Kamal Chawla settled for a bronze medal after losing his semifinal match to Chuan Leong Thor of Malaysia in the Asian Snooker Championship being held in Al Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates.

Chawla struggled against his Malaysian opponent and lost 2-6 in the semifinals, after a fine run in the tournament. The Indian somehow managed to win two frames in the best of 11 semifinal but that was not enough for him to advance further.

This was Chawla’s first medal in Asian Championships.

Sikh cab driver in US found guilty of raping, kidnapping woman

A Sikh cab driver in the US has been found guilty by a jury here of raping and kidnapping a 29-year-old woman and faces up to 25 years in prison for the 2011 assault.

Gurmeet Singh, 42, will be sentenced on May 12 after the jurors at his trial in Brooklyn Supreme Court yesterday found him guilty of raping and kidnapping.

The jurors cleared him of the charges of robbery and assault as well as the on the count of predatory sexual assault.

The victim, a non-profit employee, recounted in court her trauma of being held at knife point during the 2011 assault.

Nine more bodies recovered in Assam, death toll in militant attacks rises to 32

Nine more bodies were recovered from a village in Baksa district on Saturday morning, taking the toll to 32 in the violence unleashed by NDFB-Songbijit militants in Bodoland Territorial Administration Districts (BTADC) area in Assam.

The bodies of the victims, including four children and two women, were recovered from Khagrabari village under Salbari sub-division adjacent to the Manas National Park, official sources said.

Bodies of two children were identified as Ilina Khatun and Ariful Islam.

Two killed in Pakistan firing

At least two people were killed Saturday when unidentified gunmen opened fire at a vehicle in the southern port city of Karachi, police said.

Advocate Chaudhry Idrees and his driver Nauman Shah died on spot as the armed men attacked the vehicle, Dawn online reported.

Police claimed this was a targetted attack.

Lawyers in Karchi announced a boycott of the city courts following the killings.

India has said that the cancellation of Visa of 500 Pakistani pilgrims has been done as a measure of precaution to ensure their safety and welfare.

External affairs ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin has said that the visit of such a large group of pilgrims from Pakistan would have required much more elaborate arrangements than what is usually done for such events.

“All government agencies including our railway authorities had made full arrangement to transport over 500 pilgrims from Pakistan, from the Attari railway station, to Ajmer and back,” he added.
