Pro-Jamat group asked to vacate Suchitra Sen’s home in B’desh

A Bangladeshi court today dismissed a plea by a pro-Jamaat-e-Islami organisation to retain possession of legendary Bengali actress Suchitra Sen’s home in Pabna city.

A bench headed by Supreme Court Justice S K Sinha issued the order, clearing all legal hurdles that existed in recovering Sen’s ancestral home at Hem Sagar Lane in the city.

There is now no legal bar to evict the Imam Ghazali Institute from the home, said Additional Attorney General Murad Reza, bdnews24.Com reported.

EAMCET to be held on May 22

The Engineering, Agriculture and Medical Common Entrance Test (EAMCET) will be held on May 22 and the results will be announced on June 2.

According to EAMCET co-convener K Eshwar Prasad, elaborate arrangements are being made for the smooth conduct of the test. The candidates can download the hall tickets online from May 8. Compared to last year, there has been an increase of about 8,000 applications for medical stream. However, the applications for engineering stream have dropped by nearly 10,000.

It’s NDA or chaos, says Jaitley

A day after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi refused to back a Third Front, BJP leader Arun Jaitley Sunday said people will have to choose between a Narendra Modi-led NDA or a “chaotic coalition”.

The Bharatiya Janata Party leader said the Left parties wanted a split mandate so that they could put together a Third Front.

He also indicated that the Congress’ regional rivals would automatically ally with the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

“Rahul Gandhi has categorically said that his party would not support the Third Front,” Jaitley said in a blog Sunday.

Twin undersea quakes jolt south Fiji

Two 6-magnitude-plus undersea earthquakes jolted south Fiji Sunday, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said.

A 6.6 magnitude tremor struck from a depth of 527.6 km at 9.15 p.m. local time (0915 GMT), and was traced 722 km south of the Fijian capital of Suva, data showed.

The agency had initially reported the quake at 6.8 magnitude.

Another 6.1 magnitude quake struck from a depth of 610.6 km at 9.25 p.m. local time (0925 GMT), and was traced 848 km south of Suva.

Cong to face consequences of passing T-Bill in haste:Rajagopal

Former MP from Vijayawada Lagadapati Rajagopal, who had created a storm by using pepper spray in Parliament, attacked the Congress saying it would face the consequences of trying to “bulldoze and kill democracy” by hastily passing the Telangana Bill in Lok Sabha.

Congress seeks transfer of case against Modi outside Gujarat

Narendra Modi today hit out at the Trinamool Congress for claiming to be a do-gooder for Muslims, saying the minority community is far better-off in his state Gujarat than in West Bengal.

Korean president visits scene of ferry sinking

South Korean President Park Geun-hye Sunday visited the site where passenger ship Sewol sank April 16 claiming at least 230 lives

Park headed first for the Paengmok port where coast guard ships bring ashore bodies recovered from the sunken ship and let relatives of the missing people identify the bodies.

ISI planned attacks on US, Israeli missions in India

Central security agencies have claimed that Pakistan’s ISI had plans to carry out terror attacks on two foreign consulates in India with evidence for this reportedly given by a Sri Lankan national, arrested from Chennai, during his interrogation.

Official sources claimed on Sunday that Sakir Hussain, a Sri Lankan national, told his interrogators that he had been hired allegedly by an official in Pakistani high commission in Colombo as part of the ISI’s alleged plans to conduct reconnaissance of US consulate in Chennai and Israeli consulate in Bengaluru.

Two dead after Shanghai residential building collapse

Two people were killed and three others injured when an old residential building collapsed in Shanghai Sunday, authorities said.

The three-storey brick-and-wood structure crumbled at 4.49 a.m. when nine people were in the building in Hongkou District, Xinhua reported citing local government.

Four people managed to escape while the rest were pulled out by rescuers, the statement said.

Three injured survivors were being treated in a hospital.

An initial investigation showed the accident was caused by a gas explosion.

Police kill 2 suspects, arrest 8 in Assam violence

Police on Sunday said they killed two suspected militants and arrested eight forest guards for their alleged involvement in the killings of 29 Muslims in the worst ethnic violence in Assam in two years.

Four suspected militants hurled a grenade and fired at policemen who ambushed them in a dense forest, said police officer Sanjukta Prashar. Police killed two in an exchange of gunfire and two suspects escaped near Tejpur, a town nearly 80 kilometres north of the region where Muslims were attacked on Thursday and Friday, she said.

EC failed to stop rigging, violence: Modi

Modi dares EC to act against him

Complaining of booth rigging in West Bengal, Bihar and western Uttar Pradesh, Narendra Modi today alleged that the Election Commission was not acting impartially and dared it to take action against him.

FDI in services sector drops 54% during April-February

Foreign direct investment (FDI) in the services sector declined 54 per cent to USD 2.18 billion during April-February of 2013-14 from a year earlier.

Services such as banking, insurance, outsourcing, R&D, courier and technology testing had received USD 4.74 billion of FDI during April-February 2013, according to data from the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP).

According to experts, foreign investors will move ahead with their decisions once a new government takes over after the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.

Economic growth slated to improve but gradually: Deloitte

Country’s economic growth will improve in the coming quarters, but the pace is likely to be gradual due to persistent challenges such as elevated inflation and policy uncertainty, says a report.

According to Deloitte’s ‘Global Economic Outlook’ report, the country’s growth outlook will also hinge on the election outcomes on May 16.

“Economic growth is likely (to) improve in the coming quarters, but the pace of growth may remain gradual because of persistent challenges,” the report said. It said that some challenges have been more persistent in nature.

India Inc’s plan to soften bad debt-burden on banks

The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has recommended a five-point action plan for consideration by the government to address the mounting problem of bad loans in the banking system.

“The five-point action plan focuses upon: Revamping the Corporate Debt Restructuring (CDR) mechanism; creating a special resolution mechanism for the infrastructure sector; setting up a national asset management company; liberalizing norms to increase capitalization of asset reconstruction companies; and improving the effectiveness of the insolvency regime,” CII said in a statement here Sunday.
