Ukrainian forces kill rebels behind helicopter attack

Ukrainian military forces Thursday killed the armed activists responsible for the deaths of Ukrainian soldiers in a military helicopter crash near the eastern town of Slavyansk, the National Guard Force said.

“In response to the actions of terrorists, the forces of the anti-terror operation made artillery and air bombardments, which resulted in liquidation of a group of criminals involved in shooting at the helicopter,” Xinhua quoted the National Guard as saying in a statement.

Sabahy admits defeat in Egypt presidential election

Egypt’s presidential candidate Hamdeen Sabahy Thursday admitted his defeat in the elections that concluded Wednesday, losing to his sole rival, former military chief Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi.

“I admit losing the presidential race,” Xinhua quoted Sabahy as saying in a press conference Thursday.

“We show respect for the will of the people,” Sabahy added.

Sabahy said there were some violations during the vote but they would not affect the final result.

30 per cent of world is now fat, no country immune

Almost a third of the world is now fat, and no country has been able to curb obesity rates in the last three decades, according to a new global analysis. Researchers found more than 2 billion people worldwide are now overweight or obese. The highest rates were in the Middle East and North Africa, where nearly 60 per cent of men and 65 per cent of women are heavy. The US has about 13 per cent of the world’s fat population, a greater percentage than any other country. China and India combined have about 15 per cent.

India successfully test-fires Pinaka rockets

India Thursday successfully test-fired the indigenously-built Pinaka rockets from a defence base in Odisha, an official said.

Three rounds of rockets were fired from the multi-barrel rocket launching system (MBRLS) at the Proof and Experimental Establishment (PXE) in Chandipur-on-sea in Balasore district, around 230 km from state capital Bhubaneswar.

Capable of firing 12 rockets in a single salvo with 1.2 tonnes of explosives within 40 seconds, the Pinaka system has already been inducted into the armed forces and was used in the field during the 1999 Kargil war.

Court calls Tihar Jail superintendent on Bhatkal plea

A court here Thursday asked Tihar Jail superintendent to appear before it June 7 while hearing a plea moved by Indian Mujahideen co-founder Yasin Bhatkal complaining about insufficient facilities provided to him and his co-accused in the prison.

Bhatkal and his associate Assadullah Akhtar told the National Investigation Agency (NIA) special judge that they were not being provided even the basic amenities in the high security prison.

The duo were presented in the court during an in-chamber hearing in a case filed by the NIA.

Railway minister meets Modi

Railway Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda Thursday paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Gowda was accompanied by Minister of State for Railway Manoj Sinha.

AP Chief Secy asks banks to help calamity-hit farmers

Stating that farmers in Andhra Pradesh suffered heavily due to a series of natural calamities in the last five years, Chief Secretary Prasanna Kumar Mohanty today asked banks to come to their rescue.

The statement comes at a time when bankers have complained about mounting dues and non-repayment of loans, because of loan waiver promised by various political parties.

However, state officials suggested that banks and the government should address the loan waiver issue since every party had promised it in their election manifestos.

Curfew in Meghalaya after clash over custodial death

Curfew was imposed in certain areas of Meghalaya’s South Garo Hills district Thursday following a violent clash over the death of a suspected militant in police custody, officials said.

A mob attacked the Chokpot police station, injuring six policemen. Three police vehicles and three motorcycles were set ablaze.

Taking advantage of the melee, suspected militants also fired from a church complex towards police personnel who were rushed in to to control the mob.

However, police did not retaliate as there were many children in the church premises.

According to Kukatpally Police, Deceased P Manjula (45) an Housewife W/o Swamy R/o Allwyn Colony of Kukatpally committed suicide by hanging herself at her residence on Wednesday night hours.

The family members of the woman told the police that she slipped into depression she was a paralysis patient due to ill health and might have ended her life over it.

An unidentified man of age about 35-years old died on the spot after he was hit by a train while trying to cross the railway tracks.

Delhi sizzled Thursday with the maximum temperature recorded three notches above average at 43.7 degrees Celsius, making it the season’s hottest day so far. Worse is in store as the met department has forecast 45 degrees for Friday.

The scorching sun coupled with hot winds made the day unbearable for those venturing outside as roads wore a deserted look.

The minimum temperature settled a notch above average at 26.3 degrees Celsius.

KCR to be sworn in as T CM on june 2: Guv

Governor ESL Narasimhan has invited the TRS LP leader K Chandrasekhar Rao to form the Government in Telangana. A Raj Bhavan communiqué said the swearing in ceremony of K Chandrasekhar Rao as Chief Minister of Telangana State will be held at Raj Bhavan on June 2 at 8.15 am. While congratulating KCR on his election as TRS LP leader, the Governor invited him to form the Government.
It may be mentioned that TRS leader E Rajender and other MLAs called on the Governor on May 18 and handed over him a copy of TRS LP meeting decision which elected KCR as its leader.

Narasimhan to be sworn-in as T Governor (addl charge) on june 2

ESL Narasimhan will take oath as Governor with additional charge for Telangana State on June 2, according to information. He is likely to take oath as the Governor (additional charge) by High Court Chief Justice Kalyan Jyothi Sengupta at Raj Bhavan on the Appointed Day at about 6.30 am.
It may be noted that President Pranab Mukherjee recently appointed Narasimhan with additional charge as Governor of Telangana State. TRS Chief KCR will take oath as new Chief Minister of Telangana at 8.15 am. Arrangements are being made for swearing ceremonies of the Governor as well chief minister.

Asaduddin Opposes Ordinance

MIM president and MP Asaduddin Owaisi has opposed the Centre issuing ordinance merging 200 affected villages of Polavaram project in Khammam district, into Andhra Pradesh.
Owaisi called on the state governor E S L Narasimhan and lodged his party’s protest. He protested the Centre’s ordinance to hand over 200 villages of Telangana to Andhra Pradesh for Polavaram irrigation project under Bhadrachalam and Palvancha mandals in Khammam district.

Mysoora justifies P’varam ordinance

YSRC leader M V Mysoora Reddy today said TRS president K Chandrasekhar Rao might have called a bandh to satisfy Telangana people.
Reacting on the bandh called by TRS on the ordinance related to Polavaram project, Reddy told media that the bandh is related to TRS. If affected villages of Polavaram project were not merged with Andhra Pradesh, the affected villagers had to face problems at the time of distribution of compensation, he said.

Venkaiah says no need for controversy ON P’varam

TDP warns KCR on P’varam issue

TDP senior leader Somireddy Chandramohan Reddy today strongly criticized the TRS president K Chandrasekhar Rao for giving a call for bandh opposing the ordinance related to submergence villages under Polavaram project.
