Jaya to meet Modi on June 3 in first official engagement

In her first official engagement with Narendra Modi after he became Prime Minister, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa will meet him in Delhi next week, in a bid to push for Central assistance for her state.

The June 3 meeting is scheduled against the backdrop of Jayalalithaa boycotting Modi’s swearing-in ceremony on May 26 to protest Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s presence at the event. She had earlier dubbed as “unfortunate” the invitation to Rajapaksa.

As his tenure will come to an end after the conclusion of the IPL final on June 1, BCCI-IPL president Sunil Gavaskar feels effective implementation of ideas is a big challenge for any former player who wants to don the administrator’s hat.

“The biggest challenge for him (player-turned-official) is to put forward some of the ideas he has and the suggestions he has based on of the observations he might have made while playing, and to convince the other members of the administration team to act on them,” Gavaskar told ‘IPLT20’ website yesterday.

“This is all sycophancy. Those people who bring such proposals they do with an aim to eulogise the leader. It is good that Modi has understood and realised it. My own opinion is that it won’t be right for students to learn about lives of those people who are still alive,” Anwar said.

Non-bailable arrest warrants issued against Gilani for financial irregularities

Non-bailable arrest warrants have been issued against two senior Pakistan politicians in case relating to financial irregularities in the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP).

An anti-corruption court in Karachi issued the warrants against former prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani and a senior Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Makhdoom Amin Faheem.

According to Dawn News, a case has been registered by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) when Faheem was the commerce minister.

35-yr-old man held for raping minor girl

A 35-year-old man from Vasai in Thane district was arrested for allegedly raping a minor girl, police said today.

The accused, Rajesh Vishwakarma, a resident of the same Boidapada locality in Vasai where the 11-year-old victim lived, yesterday went to her house when her parents were not around and asked her to cook food for him as his wife had not done so, Waliv police station inspector Narayan Patil said.

Fire breaks out at Vaishno Devi shrine board godown

A fire today broke out at around 4 am in the morning at the Vaishno Devi shrine board’s godown in Katra, J and K.

The reason for the fire breakout is still not clear.

The CEO of the Shrine Board, Dr M K Bhandari said that the officers of the shrine board, the CRPF and fire tenders immediately rushed to control the damage.

Radio journalist murdered in Honduras

The host of a programme on a radio station in Honduras was found fatally shot, a spokesman for the Office of the Human Rights Commissioner told Efe.

The killing of Hernan Cruz, 52, brings to 43 the number of media workers slain in Honduras since 2003, the spokesman said.

Cruz was discovered shot to death inside a taxi in Santa Rosa de Copan, 450 km west of Honduras’s caital Tegucigalpa.

The victim, who owned several taxis, hosted a news and opinion programme on a radio station in San Juan de Opoa, where he once served as a justice of peace.

Reliance Industries to buy Network 18 for Rs 4,000 cr

In the biggest ever deal in the Indian media sector, Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) will acquire control in Network 18 Media & Investments Ltd, including its subsidiary TV18 Broadcast Ltd, for Rs 4,000 crore.

The Board of RIL on Thursday approved funding of up to Rs 4,000 crore to Independent Media Trust (IMT), of which RIL is the sole beneficiary, for acquisition of control in Network 18 Media & Investments Ltd (NW18), including its subsidiary TV18 Broadcast Ltd (TV18), the company said in a statement.
