Congress, MIM welcome GHMC budget

The Congress and Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen welcomed the Rs 4599 Crore tax-free budget of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation presented by Mayor Mohammad Majid Hussain on Monday.

Speaking in the GHMC council after the presentation of budget, Deputy Mayor appreciated the enhancement in the outlay and hoped that it would ensure development of GHMC area as a model city.

IM established new module in Rajasthan: NIA

Indian Mujahideen has established a new module in Rajasthan and members of the outfit were “highly motivated” to carry out terrorist activities in the country, the NIA has said in its charge sheet filed in a Delhi court.

In the charge sheet filed against IM co-founder Yasin Bhatkal and his three aides, the National Investigation Agency said members of the Rajasthan module of the outfit were in regular contact with Riyaz Bhatkal, a top IM operative who is based in Pakistan.

TDP, BJP rejects GHMC budget

Telugu Desam Party floor leader in the GHMC Singireddy Srinivas Reddy on Monday described the GHMC budget as jugglery of words.

Singireddy said that the GHMC was merely making tall claims while its performance has been highly condemnable. He pointed out that only 40 per cent of the amounts allotted in previous year’s budget were spent on development. He accused the Congress-MIM combine of converting the GHMC in a private company. He said there was no development at the grassroots levels.

GHMC approves Rs 4599 Cr tax-free budget

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) on Monday approved the budget for 2014-15 with a total outlay of Rs 4,599 crore. It includes Revenue Expenditure of Rs 1887.11 crore and Capital Expenditure of Rs 2,711.89 crore.

GHMC Corporators get Rs 1.5 Cr each for development

All 150 corporators of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) will get funds of Rs 1.5 crore each for the development of civic infrastructure in their respective divisions.

“We have earmarked Rs 1.5 crore for each corporator ward in the GHMC Budget 2014-15 for taking up works identified by the respective corporators,” Mayor Mohammad Majid Hussain announced while presenting the budget on Monday. The funds will be released in two phases (first half-year and second half-year) at Rs 75 lakh per phase, including the necessary allocations for sewerage and water works.

Four injured in grenade blast

At least four persons were injured in a grenade blast at a place bordering Kamrup and Baksa districts in lower Assam today.

Police sources said two grenades were hurled by two motorcycle riders at Gasbari daily market near Goreswar at a
around 6.10 pm injuring four persons on the spot.

Police went to the site and the injured were taken to hospital.

The identity of those who hurled the explosives has not been established, they said.

The anti-talk NDFB (Songbijit) faction is active in the area.

Couple commit suicide by hanging

A debt ridden man and his wife allegedly committed suicide by hanging themselves on the same rope from the ceiling of their house at Sundarapuram in the outskirts of the city today.

Police said Sathyanathan (35), a petty shop owner had borrowed heavily to expand his business and struggled to repay
the amount.

They said his brother broke open the door on hearing the couple’s children crying inside and finding that the door had not been opened since and found the dead bodies.

Plaint filed against Tejpal for keeping mobile phone in jail

Goa jail authorities today filed a formal police complaint against Tehelka founder-editor Tarun Tejpal and six others after mobile phones were found allegedly in their possession inside the Sada Sub jail.

During a surprise inspection in the jail yesterday, the authorities had found Tejpal possessing a mobile phone
with a SIM card in it, Additional Inspector General of Police Gopal Parsekar told reporters here today.

The formal police complaint has been registered against Tejpal, he said.

Kangana not disappointed with her films being shelved

Actress Kangana Ranaut has said that two of her films ‘Ungli’ and ‘I Love NY’ have been canned but she is not disappointed about it.

I Love New Year’, a romantic-comedy directed by Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru, stars Sunny Deol and Kangana. The
film was initially to be released in February last year, then it got pushed to April, to September and later December the same year, but did not hit the screens.

The exact reason for the delay was not known, but it was reportedly shelved due to the poor response to its trailer

Uneasy Cong puts up brave face on talk of LJP allying with BJP

Uneasy over speculation of Ram Vilas Paswan reaching out to BJP, Congress today put up a brave face saying every attempt is being made to broaden the ambit of a “non-communal” coalition and indicated that the matter could be resolved very soon.

Party spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi, though, remained non-committal on whether Congress and TRS will go for an
alliance or merger but stressed that be it Bihar or Andhra Pradesh, a “broadest alliance in national interest” will
happen.

Pvt Engg college lady student commits suicide

A first year woman student of a private engineering college at nearby Kalitheerthalkuppam allegedly committed suicide today by jumping from the fourth floor of the building.

The girl, hailing from neighbouring Villianoor and pursuing her first year B.Tech (Electrical and Electronic
Engineering) course, did not attend classes today,police said. They said the cause of the girl’s death was not known immediately.

ISI was against IM developing contacts with al Qaeda: NIA

Pakistan’s intelligence agency ISI had warned Indian Mujahideen(IM) operatives against attempting to establish contact with global terror groups like al Qaeda which had agreed to give training to Yasin Bhatkal’s group, NIA has told a Delhi court.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has said in its charge sheet that its probe brought out that ISI’s officials “mistreated” and “sternly warned” IM’s absconding operative Riyaz Bhatkal for trying to establish contact with al Qaeda.

For the first time in India, a youth movement organisation in Kerala would launch a matrimonial website to find life partners for cancer survivors, bringing solace and hope to those who have successfully battled the disease.

The initiative by the St George Orthodox Youth Movement, under the St Mary’s Orthodox Parish church at Kumbanad in Pathanamthitta district, is first of its kind in the country, the sources claimed.

The website – www.insightmatrimony.com – which seek to search suitable brides and grooms from among cancer survivors, will be launched on March 9, they said.

China refutes Modi’s ‘expansionist mindset’ remark

China today asserted that it had never waged a war to occupy “an inch of land of other countries”, days after BJP’s Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi slammed the Communist giant for its “expansionist mindset”.

“You mentioned expansionism by the Chinese side. I believe all of you can see that China has never waged a war of aggression to occupy an inch of land of other countries,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying told reporters while responding to questions on Modi’s remarks.

Rajiv killing: SC to hear centre’s plea against convicts release

The Supreme Court will hear Thursday the central government’s plea seeking to restrain the Tamil Nadu government from releasing the four conspirators in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.

A bench of Chief Justice P. Sathasivam and Justice Ranjan Gogoi directed listing of the matter after Additional Solicitor General Siddharth Luthra told the court that the state government had no jurisdiction to release the conspirators.

Lalu Prasad’s RJD in Bihar today split with 13 of the 22 legislators of the party pledging support to the Nitish Kumar government.

The 13, including five belonging to the minority community met at the residence of party MLA Samrat Chaudhary and wrote a letter to Speaker Uday Narayan Chaudhary withdrawing allegiance from the RJD and expressing support to the Nitish Kumar government.

SC asks EC to decide symbol plea of all-woman’s party

The Supreme Court today asked the Election Commission to decide the representation of an all- woman’s political party seeking the symbol of ‘kamadhenu’ (holy cow) for it.

A bench of justices S S Nijjar and A K Sikri asked the Commission to decide the plea of All India Mahila Democratic Front within a week after the representation is made to it.

The party pleaded that it had made several representations to the Commission for allotment of ‘kamadhenu’ symbol but EC had not taken a decision.

The Centre withdrew anti-piracy charges in the Supreme Court against the two Italian marines, charged with the killing of fishermen on Monday, an incident that soured diplomatic relations between both the countries. This will rule out the chances of death penalty for the two marines who are facing trial for allegedly killing two Indian fishermen off Kerala coast in February 2012.

Come, let’s play cricket: Pakistan minister to Taliban

In a lighter vein, Pakistan Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan today invited the Taliban to play a cricket match, saying members of the banned group keenly follow the game.

Khan was talking to reporters in Rawalpindi after he himself hit a few shots during a cricket tournament in the garrison city. He was the chief guest at the event.

The Minister said if a cricket match with the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan does take place, the outcome will be positive.

“The inputs suggest that Taliban keenly follow cricket,” he said in comments aired live on news channels.
