Sensex gains 97 points in early trade

The benchmark BSE Sensex rose nearly 97 points in early trade today on sustained buying by funds and retail investors amid a firming trend in Asian markets.

Continuing its rising streak for the third straight session, the 30-share index rose by 96.90 points, or 0.47 per cent, to 20,908.34. The index had gained nearly 275 points in the previous two sessions.

All the sectoral indices led by banking and consumer durables were trading in positive zone with gains up to 0.63 per cent.

Sanjay Dutt’s repeated parole under central scanner

The union home ministry has sought a report from the Maharashtra government on the repeated parole granted to Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt, an official said here Monday.

Last week, in a communication, the centre asked the state government to clarify whether Dutt was accorded any special privileges while accepting his parole request thrice within eight months since he was lodged in the Yerawada Central Jail in Pune.

Confirming the development, state Home Minister R.R. Patil said the state government would send its reply to the central government soon.

‘Worst’ football team finally wins match after 171 attempts

Tunstall Town FC finally won a game after a record breaking streak of going winless for 171 matches.

Of the 171 matches that they played between the wins, they lost 169 of those.

The Staffordshire club finally broke their winless streak thanks to a 2-1 win over Betley Reserves, Metro.co.uk reported.

The first goal came courtesy of a 20-yard piledriver from Tunstall’s international striker, 32-year-old Ghanaian Daniel Dwase.

Student Adam Rose, 17, put Tunstall two up with a second-half penalty, before their opponents hit one in the goal.

Malala backs campaign against female genital mutilation

Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani teenager who survived being shot in the head by the Taliban, has offered her support to a campaign against female genital mutilation (FGM) in Britain.

The 16-year-old schoolgirl, who is now based in Birmingham, has linked a fellow teenager’s campaign for greater awareness on the issue across British schools with her own global campaign for the right to education for every girl.

In an interview with the ‘Guardian’, Malala praised 17-year-old Fahma Mohamed’s campaign and joined her in calling for better education in schools about FGM.

Jaganmohan Reddy to resume his tour of Telangana state

YSR Congress president Y S Jaganmohan Reddy, who opposed the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh, plans to resume his ‘Odarpu Yatra’ (tour to console people) in Telangana and address a public meeting in Khammam district soon, sources said.

A decision to this effect was taken at the Telangana district co-ordinators’ review meeting chaired by Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy, sources said.

“He plans to undertake his unfinished ‘Odarpu Yatra’ tour to all nine Telangana districts, except Khammam, which he has already visited,” YSRCP spokesperson Gattu Ramachandra Rao told reporters here on Monday.

Rahul Gandhi to address rally in Assam

Security has been tightened ahead of Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi’s scheduled visit to the state on Tuesday.

Gandhi is scheduled to come to Assam for a two-day tour from February 25. He will have a meeting with senior journalists, followed by a public rally on the first day.

On Wednesday, the Congress leader would hold a road show and go to Diphu in Karbi Anglong to discuss various issues of the tribal district.

At least 10 people were injured when militants triggered two blasts in Assam’s Kamrup district on Monday evening, a day ahead of Gandhi’s visit.

Civil Service coaching last date extended

Centre for Educational Development of Minorities has decided to provide standard coaching to 100 minority students from across the state with an aim to increase minority representation in Civil Services. The last date to avail the scheme was earlier scheduled as 25th February which has now been extended till 28th February.

Director CEDM Prof. S A Shukoor told that more than 600 applications have been received from Hyderabad and districts so far and about 1000 applications are likely to be received by the last date.

Modi slams Centre for failing to fulfil promises to youths

BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi today slammed the UPA government for not fulfilling its promises made to the youths.

“In the last general budget, the Union government had promised skill development of ten lakh youths. Till now, they have just given training to 18,000 youths,” Modi said while inaugurating various skill development schemes of Gujarat’s labour and employment department at Mahatma Mandir here.

Indian Mujahideen co-founder Yasin Bhatkal was inspired by al-Qaeda chief Osama Bin Laden and used to motivate youngsters for sacrificing their lives in the name of ‘jihad’ through the videos of the slain terrorist, NIA has said in its charge sheet filed in a Delhi court.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) said Bhatkal had downloaded from the internet a number of documents, including lectures, and videos of Osama and other prominent terrorists, and made young boys go through them.

Assembly polls in Seemandhra, Telangana unlikely with LS polls

Assembly elections in Telangana and residuary Andhra Pradesh may not be held along with the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Official sources said bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh will take at least three to four months as it had happened in case of formation of Uttarakhand, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand, and hence Assembly elections in Telangana and residuary Andhra Pradesh are unlikely to be held along with general elections.

Lok Sabha polls might be held in Andhra Pradesh as an undivided state along with the rest of the country.

Social activist Teesta Setalvad and her husband Javed Anand today filed anticipatory bail petitions before a sessions court here in connection with alleged embezzlement of Rs 1.51 crore collected by them for turning the 2002 riot-affected Gulbarg Society into a museum.

“Teesta and Javed Anand have filed applications for anticipatory bail before the city sessions court. The applications are likely to come up for hearing before judge H C Vora tomorrow,” said Setalwad’s counsel S M Vora.
