New Zealand committed to NATO operations in Afghanistan

New Zealand Defence Minister Jonathan Coleman Tuesday pledged his country’s continued commitment to NATO operations in Afghanistan.

Defence ministers of NATO-ISAF (International Security Assistance Force) states would discuss the military drawdown in Afghanistan and planning for NATO’s post-2014 training, advice and assistance mission, Xinhua quoted Coleman as saying.

“New Zealand remains committed to supporting the final stages of the ISAF mission in Afghanistan. It is important to secure the gains made by the international community over the last decade,” he said.

Italian new government wins vote of confidence

The Italian new government won the vote of confidence in the Senate early Tuesday, after Prime Minister Matteo Renzi pledged to work for radical and immediate changes to revive the country’s recession-gripped economy.

The Renzi government, which was sworn in Saturday, won the support of the upper house by a vote of 169 to 139, reported Xinhua.

A similar vote is set to take place in the lower chamber Tuesday.

Cloudy Tuesday in Delhi

The national capital woke up to a pleasant Tuesday morning. The Met Office has forecast a cloudy day.

According to a Northern Railway official, 12 trains coming to Delhi were running late due to fog in and around the national capital.

“The day will be partly cloudy. Moderate fog was witnessed early morning,” said an India Meteorological Department official.

The visibility at 8.30 a.m. was 400 metres.

Tuesday’s minimum temperature was recorded two notches below average at 10.3 degrees Celsius.

Saqlain could inspire West Indies spinners, says Miller

West Indies spinner Nikita Miller said the return of spin legend and coach Saqlain Mushtaq to the regional setup will help inspire their bowlers in the limited-overs series against England, starting Friday.

SC refers euthanasia plea to constitution bench

The Supreme court Tuesday referred to the constitiution bench a plea for voluntary passive euthanasia in the case of a person who is terminally ill and in medical opinion there is little hope of revival and recovery.

Referring the matter to the constitution bench, the apex court bench headed by Chief Justice P. Sathasivam said an earlier judgement of the court on voluntary passive euthanasia in Aruna Shanbaug’s case did lay down a certain procedure but it was not clear.

Lalu accuses Nitish of hatching conspiracy to break RJD

With a faction of his MLAs parting ways with the RJD, Lalu Prasad today rushed to Patna to bring his house in order and blamed Chief Minister Nitish Kumar for hatching a “conspiracy” to break his party.

WhatsApp to add Skype-like voice calling later this year

Popular messaging service WhatsApp is reportedly set to add voice calls to iOS and Android platforms in the second quarter of this year.

The now 465-million-user strong service was acquired by social networking giant Facebook this week for a whopping 19 billion dollars.

According to The Verge, the addition of voice calls to its service would only enhance the app’s popularity for being an inexpensive messaging service.

The voice calls would be free of charges for a limited time, but would eventually be priced the usual 0.99 dollars per year subscription.

Obama to act on Keystone in next couple of months

President Barack Obama has told US state governors at a White House meeting that he expects to decide on the proposed Keystone XL oil pipeline from Canada in the next couple of months, two Republican governors said.

Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin, who chairs the National Governors Association and supports Keystone, said she asked Obama about the pipeline at a meeting with about 40 governors.

Obama yesterday told her he expects a decision “in the next couple of months,” but didn’t offer a specific timetable, Fallin and Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman said.
