TRS chief arrives in Hyderabad to hero’s welcome

The city Wednesday reverberated with slogans of “Jai Telangana” as TRS chief K. Chandrasekhara Rao arrived from Delhi to a hero’s welcome, his supporters celebrating the formation of Telangana state.

Thousands of Telangana Rashra Samithi (TRS) activists poured out into the streets to welcome Rao with slogans, dances, display of Telangana culture, bursting of firecrackers and showering of petals from rooftops.

Sharif appreciates new Pakistan security policy

Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif Wednesday voiced his appreciation for the country’s new security policy after it was unveiled by Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan in the National Assembly.

Speaking after the presentation of the policy, Sharif said democracy was the only panacea to problems facing the nation and urged the country to stand united for a secure and bright future, the Associated Press of Pakistan reported.

The prime minister invited proposals and a discussion in the house on the policy to further fine tune it.

No ticket to legislators for Lok Sabha polls: Kejriwal

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) will not give tickets to any incumbent legislator for the Lok Sabha elections, former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal said Wednesday.

“We will not give ticket to any legislator for the Lok Sabha elections,” Kejriwal told the media.

He, however, did not make it clear whether he was speaking about legislators of other parties or Independents, including from Delhi.

India again test-fires Akash missile

India Wednesday successfully test-fired its Akash medium-range surface-to-air missile from a defence base in Odisha, for the third time in less than a week, officials said.

The indigenously-developed missile, with a 27-km range and an effective ceiling of 15 km, was test-fired from the Integrated Test Range of Chandipur in the coastal district of Balasore, 230 km from Bhubaneswar.

All three tests were conducted for the army by scientists of state-run missile system manufacturer Bharat Dynamic Limited, and defence electronics company Bharat Electronics.

CPI-M expels Rezzak Mollah

The CPI-M Wednesday expelled former West Bengal minister Abdur Rezzak Mollah for “serious anti-party activities”.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) West Bengal unit.

“It has been decided to expel Comrade Rezzak Mollah from the party for serious anti-party activity and for belittling the party’s image in public,” the party said in a statement.

“I have not thought about it. In any case, polling is secret and let my views also remain secret,” Madhuri told reporters at an event to promote her movie ‘Gulab Gang’, when she was asked about whether she had been contacted by any political party for contesting the Lok Sabha polls.

Madhuri, who plays the role of ‘Rajjo’ in the movie, has been shown slapping and hitting men.

Fashion designing student raped by her uncle

A 19-year-old fashion designing student was allegedly raped by her uncle in Chanakypuri area of New Delhi a day before Valentine’s day, police said.

Police have registered a case in this regard on February 19 after victim approached them and a police team has been sent to Lucknow to nab the accused, identified as Sandeep Kohli who is a professional photographer and a businessman there.

Pak to set up Rapid Response Force to tackle terrorism

Pakistan government today announced that it will set up a body to coordinate between its 26 security agencies and establish a Rapid Response Force backed helicopter gunships to fight terrorism.

Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan said the National Counter-Terrorism Authority will be revamped and made into a premier counter-terrorism authority while a Joint Intelligence Directorate will be set up for effective coordination among the country’s security agencies.

Pakistan has a total of six intelligence agencies and 20 security organisations.

J&K govt allocates Rs 520 crore to Urban Dev dept for 2014

An amount of Rs 520 crore has been allocated to the Urban Development and Urban Local Bodies department this year for new and ongoing projects under it,the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly was informed today.

J&K Minister for Urban Development and Urban Local Bodies, Nawang Rigzin Jora said this while replying to a
question in the Legislative Council.

He also informed the House that about 14 projects costing Rs 823 crore were sponsored during 2013-14 for which an amount of Rs 109.38 crore stands released.

Yasin Bhatkal aide confesses involvement in 2013 Hyd blasts

A close aide of Indian Mujahideen (IM) co-founder Yasin Bhatkal, has confessed before a magistrate that he had assembled the explosives and had “guided” the members of the terror outfit while planting bombs at Hyderabad’s Dilsukhnagar area in February last year.

In his confessional statement recorded under section 164 of the CrPC in October last year, Asadullah Akhtar said the February 21, 2013 twin blasts at Dilsukhnagar area were executed by him on the instructions of another IM co-founder Riyaz Bhatkal who is now in Pakistan.

Congress, BJP running government in syndicate: Mamata

Seemandhra BJP wants to go solo in elections

Even as BJP is weighing its electoral options in Seemandhra region post bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh, its local unit has proposed that the party go solo in the upcoming Lok Sabha and Assembly elections.

The Seemandhra BJP has appealed to the party’s Central Committee to contest 175 Assembly seats and 25 Lok Sabha seats in the residuary state without tie-up with any political party.

BJP should apologise to whole country, not only Muslims: Khurshid

External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid on Wednesday said BJP President Rajnath Singh should issue a public apology not only to Muslims, but to the entire nation for the Godhra riots of 2002.

“Rajnath Singh must be regretful; he is a man of character. He’s in a spot because his PM candidate isn’t accepting the blame,” Khurshid said.

“They must first list all the wrongs that they have done, then the apology can come… They can’t just apologise to the Muslims alone, they should apologise to the whole country,” he added.

HC allows AAP plea against Sheila Dikshit

The Delhi High Court Wednesday allowed a plea by the Aam Aadmi Party to withdraw a petition filed by the erstwhile Congress government against a trial court order for lodging a complaint against former chief minister Sheila Dikshit for allegedly misusing government funds.

Justice Sunil Gaur also allowed an application of the former chief minister seeking impleadment in the case.

Ahmedabad: two bookies arrested for taking bets on Asia Cup

The city police today arrested two persons for accepting bets on the Sri Lanka-Pakistan cricket match of the ongoing Asia Cup.

“Two bookies, Bharat Thakkar and Prakash Thakkar, were arrested from Sola and Bopal areas of the city respectively,” said police inspector M A Patel.

“We have seized 17 cellphones, two laptops, an LCD TV, an Ertiga car and a motorbike from them, worth a total of Rs 10 lakh,” he said.

Rolls-Royce today unveiled its next generation of fuel-efficient plane engines to power civilian aircraft of the future.

Two weeks after announcing a shock profit warning with government cutbacks on defence spending impacting its military engines business, Rolls revealed plans to build on its successful Trent XWB engine used to power Airbus A350 passenger planes.
