BJP wants Government to take concrete steps to stop violence against North Eastern students

Reacting to death of the Arunachal student Nido here , Bharatiya Janata Party ( BJP) leader Harshvardhan on Saturday said that he was going to write a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde to take concrete steps against discrimination and violence against North Eastern students in the capital.

“Yesterday a young boy named Nido who was killed in Lajpat Nagar and the people of Delhi are hurt by the incident. This issue has come up a lot of times in the past as well,” said Harshvardhan

1,900 people killed during UN peace talks

Around 1,900 people were reportedly killed in Syria, including at least 430 civilians, during the peace talks hosted by the UN in Switzerland.

The death toll was reported by the Britain-based Syrian Oservatory for Human Rights and indicated that violence did not cede even as the warring parties met for inconclusive talks.

According to News 24, the death toll included civilians, killed by bombs, snipers, missiles, and other causes, while the rest were rebels and forces loyal to President Bashar Assad .

Vodka blamed for Russia’s high death rate

A new study suggests that the high number of early deaths in Russia is mainly due to people drinking too much alcohol, especially vodka.

The study says that 25 percent of Russian men die before they are 55, and most of the deaths are down to alcohol. The comparable UK figure is 7 percent.

Causes of death include liver disease and alcohol poisoning. Many also die in accidents or after getting into fights.

The study is thought to be the largest of its kind in the country.

DERC announces hike in power rates in Delhi

The Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) on Friday announced a hike in the power tariff ranging from 6-8 percent applicable from February 1 onwards.

According to press statement issued by the DERC, rates of BSES Yamuna were hiked by 8 percent, of NDPL by 7 percent and of BSES Rajdhani by 6 percent.

“The hike in power rates will be applicable for three months starting from February 1,” the statement added.

A young woman from Toledo, Ohio, who has been addicted to eating eye shadows since she was a toddler, has finally decided that she would be better off without her dangerous habit.

When Brittoni made an appearance on TLC’s ‘ My Strange Addiction’ she told viewers that she can imagine the make-up coating her insides, while comparing her addiction to the craving of a candy bar, Metro.co.uk reported.

Brittoni, 22, had asserted at the time that she enjoys consuming eye shadows, and loves the metallic grey, white and brown colours especially.

Rawat to be sworn in as Uttarakhand CM

Harish Rawat, who is tipped to be appointed as the new Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, on Saturday arrived in Dehradun to a resounding reception by his supporters amid beating of drums and presentation of Kumaoni folk dances.

Pak Court issues arrest warrant against Musharraf

Pak court Friday issued a bailable arrest warrant against Pakistan’s former president Pervez Musharraf, media reported.

The special court constituted to try the former army chief on charges of high treason also rejected his application for permission to go abroad for medical treatment, Dawn online reported.

Body of an unidentified man retrieved from lake

The body of an unidentified man who accidentally fell into Peddacheruvu Lake was fished out by the Meerpet police. The decomposed body is believed to be of a man aged about 30 years. The body has been preserved at Osmania Hospital morgue for postmortem. The cause of death is not yet ascertained by the police.

NREGA funds embezzled to the tune of Rs. 23 lakhs, 10 held

CID sleuths arrested ten officials including Mandal Parishad Development Officers (MPDOs) and revenue staff on Friday in Kurnool district for embezzling National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGA) funds to the tune of Rs 23 lakh.

The accused are said to have conspired and committed cheating by withdrawing amounts in the names of benami persons by issuing double job cards, besides issuing cards to students, employees and also in the name of dead persons.

10th class student gang-raped by five youths in Meerut

A 14-year-old girl was allegedly abducted and gang-raped by five youths at Mawana area here, following which police today arrested three of the accused.

The girl, a Class 10th student, was abducted by five youths on Wednesday when she went to a neighbourhood market, police said.

The accused took her to a forest area at Inchauli where they tied her to a tubewell and gave her sedatives, they said, adding, they then raped her one by one after she fell unconscious.

The victim was held captive till Friday by the accused who later left her in an unconscious state near her house.

Victims in Muzaffarnagar camps professional beggars: SP leader

Rubbing salt into the wounds of Muzaffarnagar riot victims, SP leader Atiq Ahmed has said that those living in the camps were “professional beggars”.

“In every class, in every society professional beggars are found. So, everyone knows that some of these beggars entered the riot camps,” the former MP said.

“The victims were given Rs 15 lakhs and jobs. But the people being shown in the camps were professional beggars,” he charged.

Whatmore says is leaving Pak with `fond memories and heavy heart`

Outgoing Pakistani coach Dav Whatmore has said that he is leaving the team with a heavy heart and fond memories of Pakistan after his two-year contract with the national team comes to a conclusion in February.

However, Whatmore has left early after he had the choice of availing a month’s leave, which he had not taken and hence will not see out his contract till the end of February in Pakistan.

Narendra Modi free to apply for visa: US

BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi was free to apply for an American visa and a decision on it would be made on the process that we have in place, according to a senior US official.

“We said he (Modi) is free to apply for a visa, and we’ll make a decision based on the process that we have in place here,” State Department Deputy Spokesperson Marie Harf told reporters at her daily news conference yesterday.

In 2005, the State Department had revoked a visa that Modi had for travelling to the US in the wake of the 2002 riots in Gujarat.

Woman set ablaze for resisting rape attempt dies

A woman, who was set ablaze by four men after she resisted rape attempt here three days ago, died at a hospital, police said.

The 25-year-old, who had suffered 90 percent burns, died early Saturday at the government-run Gandhi Hospital.

The incident had taken place at railway quarters at Chilkalguda in Secunderabad, the twin city of Hyderabad.

The woman, who was staying with her mother and grandmother in the house, was called out by four men known to her. She was later found engulfed in flames by the local residents, who doused the fire and shifted her to hospital.

Paper’s author, Megan Mueller, Ph.D., a developmental psychologist and research assistant professor at the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University, said that the young adults who had strong attachment to pets reported feeling more connected to their communities and relationships.
