New laser to allow breath analysis for disease diagnosis

Researchers have developed a new type of laser that will enable exciting new advances in areas as diverse as breath analysis for disease diagnosis and remote sensing of critical greenhouse gases.

The team from University’s Institute for Photonics and Advanced Sensing and the School of Chemistry and Physics said that they have been able to produce 25 times more light emission than other lasers operating at a similar wavelength which has opened the way for detection of very low concentrations of gases.

SA justice department welcomes Dewani extradition ruling

The Justice Department has reportedly welcomed the British High Court ruling that honeymoon murder suspect Shrien Dewani could be extradited to South Africa.

Spokesperson Mthunzi Mhaga said that the Republic of South Africa (RSA) initiated the extradition application in January 2011 and has consistently expressed its desire to have Dewani returned to stand trial.

According to News24, Dewani stands accused of ordering the killing of his wife Anni, 28, who was shot as the couple travelled in a taxi on the outskirts of Cape Town in November 2010.

Twitter acquires 900 IBM patents, enters cross-license agreement

Twitter has reportedly purchased 900 patents from IBM, entering into a cross-license deal.

The financial terms of the deal haven’t been disclosed.

However, Twitter’s legal director said that the deal would provide the company with greater intellectual property protection and freedom to innovate, News24 reports.

According to the report, the short messaging service had announced in a November regulatory filing that it received a letter from IBM accusing it of infringing on three of its patents.

Reacting to a legal notice sent by former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Nitin Gadkari against the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), party spokesperson Ashutosh on Saturday said there was no question of his party apologizing to Gadkari, and that he should rather ask the BJP to apologize because they were the first ones to label him a corrupt leader.

“There is no question of our party apologizing to him. His party itself thought that he was corrupt, and hence, they did not give him a second term (as BJP president), and, that is when Rajnath Singh came in his place,” said Ashutosh.
