CBI may question Ram Vilas Paswan in Bokaro recruitment case

CBI may question former Union Steel Minister Ram Vilas Paswan in connection with alleged illegalities in the Bokaro Steel plant recruitment process in which relatives of some high-profile personalities are under the scanner of the agency.

Paswan, who is negotiating seating arrangements in Bihar for the upcoming general elections, has come under the lens following recovery of some documents which, agency sources claimed, indicate that his staff may have been actively involved in extending favours to some candidates.

Trooper shoots five colleagues, kills self in Kashmir

A trooper shot dead five of his colleagues and then turned the gun on himself in north’s Kashmir Ganderbal district, sources said Thursday. An inquiry into the incident has been ordered.

Police sources told IANS that an angry trooper of the Rashtriya Rifles went berserk inside the Safapora (Manasbal) camp in the district, 35 km from here, following a heated argument with his colleagues.

“He resorted to indiscriminate firing resulting in the death of five Rashtriya Rifles troopers.

“After the firing, the irate trooper shot and killed himself,” police said.

TRS says no to talks of merger with Congress

The possibility of TRS merging with Congress seemed to have hit a roadblock on Wednesday with the regional party of Andhra Pradesh saying there was no such move but said it was open to an alliance.

Russia to obtain air bases around world: Defence chief

Russia looks forward to expand it military presence in the world’s key areas, Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu said Wednesday.

“We are going to expand our presence,” Xinhua quoted Shoigu as saying.

He elaborated that Russia has currently been negotiating with Singapore, Nicaragua, Venezuela and Seychelles in particular. “Results are nearly at hands,” Shoigu said.

According to the minister, Russia is seeking to establish bases close to the equator for refuelling its strategic air force.

US considering $1 bn loan guarantee for Ukraine

US Secretary of State John Kerry said the US is considering $1 billion in loan guarantee for Ukraine, media reported Wednesday.

Kerry said the financial aid is part of a planned international assistance for Ukraine and the US will consider other direct aid to the former Soviet republic, Xinhua reported.

He also warned Russia that it would be a “grave mistake” to embark on a military intervention in Ukraine.

Sensex gains 134 points to extend rally for 4th day

The BSE benchmark index Sensex rose for the fourth day on Wednesday ending 134.52 points higher at 20,986.99 on buying in bluechips led by GAIL, ITC and Infosys.

Buying by investors to cover their pending positions on settlement in the derivatives segment helped the barometer touch 21,000 level in day trade after a gap of over one month.

The index gained 316 points in the previous three sessions.

The broad-based National Stock Exchange index Nifty rose by 38.75 poins, or 0.62 per cent, to 6,238.80 led by FMCG and capital goods stocks.

RBI committed to “strongest growth possible”: Rajan

New shipment of chemical weapons leave Syria

A new shipment of Syria’s stockpile of chemical weapons left its territory Wednesday, as a continued international effort to rid the war-torn country of its chemical arsenal, the UN confirmed in a statement.

“Today, a shipment of the Syrian Arab Republic’s stockpile of sulphur mustard, commonly known as ‘mustard gas’ has left its territory,” Xinhua quoted special coordinator for the joint mission of the UN and the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) , Sigrid Kaag, as saying Wednesday.

Gunmen kill intelligence chief in southern Yemen

Security officials in Yemen say militants have killed an intelligence chief in a southern province.

The security officials say that two gunmen on a motorcycle shot and killed Intelligence Gen. Rishad al-Kaladi as he was leaving a restaurant in Hadramawt province’s capital.

The officials spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to journalists. Militants have carried out numerous similar security leaders killings in recent years.

UK Muslim duo get life, 45 years for murder of British soldier

A British Muslim man convicted of the murder of soldier Lee Rigby on the streets of London last year was on Wednesday sentenced to life in prison while his accomplice was jailed for 45 years.

While Michael Adebolajo has been ordered to spend the rest of his life in prison, Michael Adebowale will serve at least 45 years. The pair were absent during sentencing after a scuffle in the dock, which also delayed proceedings at the Old Bailey Court here today.

Delhi’s student raped by uncle

A 19-year-old fashion designing student was raped by her uncle here, police said Wednesday.

The incident took place at the Gymkhana Club in central Delhi’s Chanakyapuri area Feb 13.

According to the police complaint lodged Feb 19, the student said her uncle Sandeep Kohli, who lives in Lucknow and is a professional photographer, came to Delhi for some professional work.

He called her to meet at the Gymkhana Club, where he raped her and also threatened her with dire consequences if she told anybody about the assault, the complaint said.

Delhi scraps transfer points in nursery admission

Lt. Governor Najeeb Jung Wednesday informed the Delhi High Court that the city government has decided to scrap the five additional points to be given to children of parents who come under the inter-state transfer category in nursery admissions.

Advocate Raju Ramachandran, appearing for Jung, informed Justice Manmohan that a survey was carried out in 58 leading private schools in the city that found massive misuse of the transfer points.

A notification in this regard will come Thursday, the advocate said.

NASA discovers 715 new planets outside solar system

US space agency NASA said Wednesday its Kepler spacecraft has verified the existence of 715 more planets orbiting stars outside the solar system.

The latest discovery brings the confirmed count of planets beyond the solar system to nearly 1,700, Jack Lissauer, a planetary scientist at NASA’s Ames Research Center told a press teleconference, Xinhua reported.

“We’ve almost doubled just today the number of planets known to humanity,” Lissauer said.

These newly-verified worlds orbit 305 stars, meaning many are in “multiple-planet systems much like our own solar system,” NASA said.

146 rhino killed in South Africa since 2014

A total of 146 rhino have been killed so far this year in South Africa, with 95 poached in the Kruger National Park bordering Mozambique, said the South African National Parks (SANP) Wednesday.

“The Kruger National Park remains hardest hit by rhino poaching, having lost 95 rhino since Jan 1,” Xinhua quoted SANP spokesperson Albi Modise as saying.

This mainly resulted from the park’s open border with Mozambique. Poachers have killed all the rhino on that side, and are safe from South African forces when they cross the border, according to Modise.

63% Indians favour BJP in polls: US survey

More than three-fifths of Indian voters favour the opposition BJP in the upcoming general elections as against less than one-fifth for the ruling Congress, a major American survey released today said.

“With the Indian parliamentary elections just weeks away, the Indian public, by a margin of more than three-to-one, would prefer the Hindu-nationalist opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to lead the next Indian government rather than the Indian National Congress (INC), which heads the current left-of-centre governing coalition,” Pew Research said.
