Museology is neglected in India: PM

Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh on Sunday said museology is a neglected field in India and added that Indian museum can and must take a leadership role in making good this deficiency.

Inaugurating the bicentenary celebrations of the Indian Museum here, Dr. Singh said: “Museology is a neglected field in India and it is not enough now to just house a collection but there should be efforts to document, study and analyse the collection and build up collaborations with other great museums.”

PM asks Deepa Dasmunsi to end fast for AIIMS-like institute in Raiganj

Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh today requested Union Minister Deepa Dasmunsi to end her fast to press for setting up an AIIMS-like institute in her constituency Raiganj, West Bengal .

Dr. Singh spoke to Dasmunsi, who began hunger strike here on Friday, and assured support for her demand.

“Yes, the Prime Minister called me in the morning around 9:37 a.m. He requested me to withdraw the fast. He said that we will together see that AIIMS like hospital can be set up here,” Dasmunsi said. (ANI)

Australians’ support for republic dwindles to 20-year low

Support for a republic has dwindled among Australians to a 20-year low, a new survey has found.

An exclusive ReachTEL poll of more than 2100 Australians found that only 39.4 per cent of Australians saying they support a republic.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, support was lowest among older Australians and Generation Y voters, with people aged 35 to 65 most supportive of Australia abandoning the monarchy.

The poll found that 41.6 percent oppose the country becoming a republic, and 19 percent had no opinion on the issue.

Four-year-old boy seen shooting AK-47 in terrifying Syria footage

A new video has emerged on YouTube showing a four-year-old receiving training to use an AK-47 in the Syrian conflict.

The child is reported to be one of the ‘cub’ jihadists recruited by rebel factions in the war-torn Syria.

The footage titled ‘A message from one of the cubs of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant’ was posted on YouTube by a north Syrian terrorist group on January 21.

According to the Daily Star, the toddler is seen firing a series of bullets from the gun, as adults around chant Allahu Akbar -‘God is Greater’.

Woman strangled by husband

32-year-old Fatima Begum was strangulated by her husband on Friday at Narsingi. The accused Faisal stuffed her body in a suitcase. The victim Fatima Begum was the wife of Jaber Ali alias Faisal. The couple was married about six year ago and had a daughter.

After a row over some issue Faisal who is an auto driver by occupation, strangulated his wife and stuffed the body in a suit case. A cousin of the victim somehow learnt about the crime and rushed to the house along with the police. A case has been registered against Faisal under section 302 IPC.

Hizbul Muhjahideen commander held

A self-styled commander of Hizbul Muhjahideen, a militant outfit, has been arrested by security forces in Anantnag district of Kashmir.

“Mubarak Ahmad Wani alias Major Saqib, Divisional Commander of Hizbul Mujahideen, was arrested based on specific intelligence in a joint operation yesterday,” an Army spokesman said today.

An AK rifle, a pistol and some ammunition were recovered from his possession, the spokesman said.

Wani had joined militancy in 2001 when he had crossed the Line of Control to Pakistan-occupied Kashmir to get arms training, he said.

Woman jumps from height, dies

A 32-year-old woman jumped from 3rd floor of a building sustaining multiple injuries. The incident occurred at Rahmathnagar, Jubilee Hills, where Sunitha, w/o G Nagi Reddy committed suicide by jumping from 3rd floor. She was rushed to the nearby hospital where doctors declared her brought dead. Not bearing severe head ache she took the extreme step.

Teenager gang-raped in Burdwan district

A teen aged girl was gang-raped allegedly by two men who beat up her brother when he came to her rescue in Burdwan district, police said on Saturday.

The 14-year-old girl, was alone at home last night since her mother was visiting a relative’s house and her father out on an errand when one of the accused allegedly dragged her out to the nearby Nigh colliery and raped her, they said.

He was joined by second person who also allegedly raped her, they said, adding when the girl’s brother came to her rescue he was beaten up by the two.

Teacher beaten up for molestation in AP, handed over to cops

A teacher of a private school was on Saturday beaten up for allegedly molesting a student and was later handed over to police.

According to the complaint, A Bhaskar Rao (33), a teacher of mathematics at a private school in Kancharapalem area had been misbehaving with a class IX girl for the past few weeks.

Though the girl complained to the principal of the school, the authorities did not take any action against him.

The victim then narrated the incident to her parents, after which the local residents caught hold of the teacher and thrashed him up severely.

Alien life may have evolved just after Big Bang

Exoplanets may have been teeming with alien microbial life just 15 million years after the Big Bang, according to a Harvard scientist.

Exoplanets that orbit far beyond the habitable zone may have been able to support life in the distant past, warmed by the relic radiation left over from the Big Bang that created the universe 13.8 billion years ago, said astrophysicist Abraham Loeb from the Harvard University.

After Walmart, Amazon lobbies in US for Indian FDI

After supermarket giant Walmart, it is online retail major Amazon which has begun lobbying with the US lawmakers to seek their support for facilitating its “foreign direct investment in India”.

According to lobby disclosure reports filed with the US Senate, Amazon.com and its group entities including Amazon Corporate LLC have been lobbying on various issues since at least year 2000.

However, it was only in the last quarter, ended December 31, 2013, when its lobbying issues included “foreign direct investment in India”, shows the latest disclosure report dated January 22, 2014.

Centre to hike DA by 10% for second time, will make it 100%

Centre is likely to announce next month a hike in dearness allowance by 10 per cent to 100 per cent, benefiting about 50 lakh employees and 30 lakh pensioners.

It would be the second double digit DA hike in a row. The government had announced a hike of 10 per cent to 90 per cent in September last year, effective from July 1, 2013.

According to an official source, the preliminary assessment suggests that dearness allowance hike will not be less than 10 per cent and would be effective from January 1 this year.

British Airways to pay Rs 5L for not helping stranded fliers

British Airways has been directed by a consumer forum to pay Rs 2.5 lakh each to two doctors for leaving them to “fend for themselves” after their flight from London to Delhi was cancelled due to a snowstorm.

The Delhi State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission said the airline “violated the basic courteous behaviour” expected of it by not making arrangements of food and stay for its passengers and their “violation of duty to care” is “actionable negligence”.
