Youth rapes teenage girl

A 17-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a youth under the pretext of marrying her and later reneging on his promise, police said today.

The accused, identified only as Ganesh, is a driver and the victim eloped with him after he assured her of marrying her, they said.

The teenage girl is the resident of Sabbavaram area in the district, police said.

The girl eloped with the accused on January 31 and the duo stayed at a lodge near Lankelapalem under Parawada block where Ganesh allegedly sexually assaulted her.

Reacting to Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh’s statement calling the coming Lok Sabha election the “last show” of the Congress, Chhattisgarh Assembly opposition leader TS Singhdeo said that the UPA would continue at the Centre like sequels of popular movies.

He also accused CM Raman Singh of covering up his government’s shortcomings through his populist policies.

“There is uncertainty over the outcome (of this Lok Sabha election). Nothing can be predicted. There will be a new picture,” Singhdeo told reporters at Raipur Press Club today.

16 Syria rebels killed in jihadist bomb attack: NGO

At least 16 Syrian rebels have been killed in a double bomb attack carried out by the jihadist Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, an NGO said.

Another 20 rebels were injured in the attack yesterday, some of them seriously, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

The attack took place in the town of al-Ra’ei, not far from the Syrian border with Turkey, the group said.

The Observatory said an ISIS fighter blew himself up at the headquarters of an Islamist rebel brigade in the Aleppo town, near the border with Turkey.

Moderate earthquake hits southern Iran

Iranian state TV says a magnitude 5.5 earthquake has jolted a sparsely populated area in the country’s south.

The report said the quake hit yesterday evening in the district of Goharan, about 1,200 kilometers (750 miles) southeast of the capital Tehran.

It says many buildings were damaged and that rescue workers were on the scene.

The quake affected cellular phone coverage in the region with a population of 15,000 in nearly 80 villages. No casualties are reported so far.

Iran sits on a series of seismic fault lines and experiences one slight quake a day on average.

36 dead in air strikes on Syria’s Aleppo: monitor

At least 36 people have been killed in regime air strikes and aerial attacks with explosive-packed barrels on the northern Syrian city of Aleppo, a monitoring group said.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said regime aircraft carried out a series of deadly air strikes for a second day in eastern parts of the city.

Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman told AFP that most of the dead were killed in several raids in which regime helicopters dropped so-called barrel bombs on the Tariq al-Bab district.

Mandela’s will to be made public Monday

The dying wishes of South Africa’s anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela will be revealed tomorrow, the Constitutional Court announced.

“The executors in the estate… Invite you to a media briefing on the contents of his last will and testament,” the court’s vice president, Dikgang Moseneke, said in a statement Sunday nearly two months after Mandela died on December 5.

The Mandela Foundation will reveal the contents at midday tomorrow at the foundation, he said.

US immigration system ‘completely backwards’: Bobby Jindal

Describing the current US immigration system as “completely backwards”, Indian-American Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal today said the country needs a system of “high walls and a broad gate”.

“When it comes to immigration, we’ve got a completely backwards system today. What I believe we need is a system of high walls and a broad gate. Right now, we’ve got the opposite. We’ve got low walls and a narrow gate,” Jindal told CNN in an interview.

Woman in Sangam Vihar slaps AAP MLA

Aam Aadmi Party MLA Dinesh Mohania was today allegedly slapped by a woman in his Sangam Vihar constituency when he had gone there to study the problem of water scarcity in the area.

Mohania, however, described the entire episode, which took place this evening, as being part of a conspiracy against him.

“There is a water mafia operating in the area… I went to see the problem after receiving complaints. The mafia did not come in front, instead they sent a woman,” Mohania said.

He added that he possesses video footage to substantiate his claims.

Clash averted between two groups

Police was deployed at Raya town here today after two groups of the same community got into a dispute over the burial of a body of a woman, a district official said.

While one group wanted to bury the body of the woman near Pathanpara, the other group objected to it triggering a dispute.

The groups agreed not to take any agressive step after the intervention of district administration, Mat SDM, Vineet Kumar Srivastava said.

5 killed as two blasts hit cinema hall in NW Pakistan

At least five persons were killed and nearly 20 others injured when two blasts ripped through a cinema hall in the capital of the restive Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province of northwest Pakistan today.

According to initial reports, around 70 people were in the theatre when the blasts occurred. A Pashto film was being screened at the hall located opposite a police station.

AAP named ‘corrupt politicians’ for four reasons: Kejriwal

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said in comments published Sunday in a Pakistani newspaper that the AAP targeted “corrupt politicians” for four reasons.

“There are four reasons,” Kejriwal was quoted by the Dawn as telling a group of Pakistani journalists who called on him.

“We are against corruption among politicians,” he said, listing the reasons.

“We are against their criminalization,” he added. “We are against their commercialization. And we are also against dynastic politics.”

World Food Program can’t meet demand in Syria

Aid agencies have been overwhelmed by demand for food in Syria, with thousands surviving without a regular supply of nourishment for more than a year because of civil war in the Middle Eastern country, a United Nations official said.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has received a mixed reaction from the media here after his interaction with Pakistani journalists, with one daily today calling him the “most unimpressive” Indian politician while another praised him for his simplicity.

Tearing into Kejriwal, The News daily reported: “India’s new shooting star with dreams of another ‘India Shining’ appeared as of the country’s most unimpressive politicians but with a most impressive agenda”.

Man arrested for molesting Manipuri women in Delhi

A 32-year-old man has been arrested for his involvement in the molestation of two Manipuri women in the capital, police said Sunday.

The incident occurred before Republic Day but came to light after the death of Nido Tania, a 19-year-old student from Arunachal Pradesh.

Delhi Police arrested Prem Chand, a resident of Kotla Mubarakpur area in south Delhi, for his involvement in assaulting the two women.

Police said the two women, in their late 20s, were beaten up by a group of men in Kotla Mubarakpur on the evening of Jan 24.

Romania sends last military mission to Afghanistan

The troops of the Romanian 20th Infantry Battalion left Sunday for Afghanistan for the last mission, Xinhua reported.

The Romanian troops, dubbed the Black Scorpions, have carried out numerous missions in Afghanistan, Bosnia and Iraq.

121 dead in Syrian regime attacks on Aleppo

At least 121 people died in bombardments using barrels of explosives dropped from helicopters on the weekend by the Syrian army over various sites in northern Aleppo province, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported Sunday.

Among the fatalities Saturday were 13 children and at least 10 combatants of the Al Nusra Front, which is linked to Al Qaeda, according to a communique issued by the independent group, which has a wide network of activists on the ground in the war-torn Middle Eastern nation.

DMK chief Karunanidhi’s daughter Kanimozhi hospitalised

DMK Rajya Sabha MP and daughter of party chief M Karunanidhi, Kanimozhi was on Sunday admitted to a private hospital here, sources close to her said.

“She has giddiness and uneasiness since she did not sleep well last night,” they said. A medical bulletin released by Kauvery Hospital said, “She is undergoing treatment for tiredness and exhaustion, with intravenous fluid therapy. She has been advised complete rest for the next few days.”

Kanimozhi, who was admitted this morning, was recovering well and would be discharged soon, it added.
