Stricken submarine: Two sailors still missing

Two sailors are still missing on the accident-hit INS Sindhuratna submarine, official sources said Thursday.

An official said the condition of the submarine has been described as safe.

“We shall attempt to open the sealed compartments where the two missing sailors are believed to be trapped and hope to rescue them,” the official, requesting anonymity, told IANS.

Seven Indian Navy personnel were injured and two went missing early Wednesday after smoke filled up a compartment aboard the INS Sindhuratna submarine.

Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s niece set to join Congress

Former Lok Sabha member Karuna Shukla, the niece of former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee who quit the BJP last year, will join Congress on Thursday.

In an embarrassment to the BJP ahead of Lok Sabha elections, Shukla met Congress president Sonia Gandhi here on Wednesday and is expected to be welcomed into the party fold at the Congress headquarters today.

Shukla had resigned from the BJP last year, alleging she was being “continuously neglected” by senior leaders.

Chinese New Year sees more visitors to New Zealand

New Zealand had a record number of overseas visitors last month, thanks to the Chinese New Year holiday, the government statistics agency announced Thursday.

The number of visitors last month was up 12 percent year-on-year to 292,400, the highest ever for a January month, according to Statistics New Zealand.

“New Zealand saw more visitors arrive from China and Hong Kong this month, compared with January 2013, due to the earlier timing of Chinese New Year,” population statistics manager Andrea Blackburn said in a statement.

Rain likely in Delhi today

The Board of cement manufacturer India Cements Ltd today approved the amalgamation of Trinetra Cement Ltd and Trishul Concrete Products with the company.

“The Board of Directors at the meeting held today approved the proposal for amalgamation of Trinetra Cement Ltd and Trishul Concrete Products with India Cements Ltd subject to all regulatory approvals,” city-based India Cements said in a statement.

Govt to file affidavit in SC seeking field trials of GM crops

Government will file an affidavit in the Supreme Court pleading that field trials of genetically modified (GM) crops be allowed, Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar said today.

The minister assured that the government will take all safety precautions for conducting field trials of GM crops.

Hearing a petition against GM crops, the Supreme Court had set up a technical expert committee (TEC), which suggested an indefinite moratorium on such trials unless shortcomings in the regulatory process were plugged. But one member gave a dissenting note opposing the moratorium.

‘Designated pvt hospitals cannot deny free aid to refugees’

Refugees in India can avail of free treatment facilities at any of the 45 private hospitals in the national capital which have been identified by Delhi government to render such services, the Directorate of Health Services (DHS) has said.

Replying to a Delhi-based lawyers’ group which has alleged that a Myanmarese refugee was denied treatment by a south Delhi private hospital, DHS clarified that the designated private hospitals cannot deny free assistance to any refugee who came under the EWS category.
