ECET exam. on May 10; JNTU releases schedule

Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU) today released schedule of ECET, which would be conducted for admissions into B Tech courses.
According to the schedule, the JNTU will receive applications from the candidates from February 10. The ECET examination would be conducted on May 10 and the results will be released on May 19. Rank cards will be issued to the candidates from May 26. (NSS)

Seven petitions filed in SC against State division

Seven petitions have been filed in the Supreme Court against bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh. These petitions filed by leaders of various political parties and voluntary organizations might come up for hearing on Friday.

The YSR Congress Party leader Somayajulu filed the petition in the Apex Court claiming that Andhra Pradesh Re-Organization Bill was against the spirit of the Constitution. The counsel of Raghuramakrishnam Raju, who filed petition in the Court, also urged the Supreme Court to speed up hearing on the petitions filed against bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh. (NSS)

No plans of joining politics: Shilpa Shetty

Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty today said that she had no plans of venturing into politics.

“I honestly have no interest in politics, I don’t think, I could ever get into politics,” said Shetty, who was in the city to launch her spa outlet.

When asked about the person, who should become the next Prime Minister of India, Shetty, 38, without naming anyone said, “From my point of view as a common person the PM of India should be a person who must keep the nation first and himself later.”

Fit-again Irfan hopes to do well in Hazare Trophy

India discard Irfan Pathan today said that he is working hard on his fitness and hopes to perform well for Baroda in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, starting February 27.

“I have been working with my physio on good programmes. I am fit and played three Ranji matches for Baroda this season. I pray to God that I stay fit in the upcoming domestic one-day matches,” Pathan told reporters at a promotional event here.

Baroda will take on Mumbai in their opening game on February 27.

Delhi govt seeks action against Sheila Dikshit

Opening a new front against outside supporter Congress, AAP government today recommended to President Pranab Mukherjee to issue an advisory to former Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit based on a Lokayukta order for alleged wrongdoings in grant of provisional regularisation certificates to unauthorised colonies.

“We endorsed the Lokayukta order. We have recommended that guilty should be punished as per the Lokayukta recommendation,” PWD Minister Manish Sisodia said.

400 flights cancelled as storm hits US

More than 400 flights were cancelled due to heavy snow Monday at three major airports in the New York area of the US, Xinhua reported.

The flight-tracking website FlightAware reported that by Monday afternoon, 177 flights were cancelled at LaGuardia Airport, 75 at John F. Kennedy International (JFK) Airport, and 188 at Newark Liberty International Airport.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for New York City, Long Island and parts of New Jersey, where 12-20 cm of snow is expected.

TDP, TRS leaders meet political parties leaders on Telangana

Regional parties from Andhra Pradesh today held a series of meetings with various political parties over the Telangana statehood Bill.

Even as TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu met leaders of BJP and JD(U) here, his counterpart and TRS supremo K Chandrasekhar Rao led a delegation to CPI.

Both the parties held separate discussions with RLD chief Ajit Singh within a gap of three hours on the Telangana bill which has been listed for introduction, consideration and passage in the coming session of Parliament.

BJP today dismissed the speculation on the emergence of a Third Front, saying such a configuration would neither have “ideological coherence” nor a large political nucleus which could provide stability to it.

Israeli PM slams Abbas’ refusal to recognise Jewish state

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu Monday slammed Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’ unwillingness to recognise Israel as a Jewish state in an interview by New York Times.

Abbas in the interview published Sunday proposed his own plan for security arrangements with Israel. The proposal accepts some major demands imposed by Israelis throughout the deteriorating peace negotiations starting last July, Xinhua reported.

UN deputy mediator on Syria to resign

Nasser al-Kidwa, UN Deputy Joint Special Representative on Syria, has confirmed that he is leaving the position, a UN spokesperson said Monday.

“United Nations and League of Arab States Deputy Joint Special Representative Nasser al-Kidwa has confirmed to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon his intention to leave his current position, effective this week,” Xinhua quoted Ban’s spokesperson as saying in a statement.

Al-Kidwa has indicated to Ban his willingness to serve the world organisation in other capacities, should the secretary general wish, according to the statement.

Saudi Arabia to punish citizens fighting abroad

Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al Saud ordered Monday the imprisonment of Saudi citizens who fight outside the country with prison terms ranging between 3-20 years, the Saudi Press Agency said.

Members of local, regional and international extremist and terrorist groups will also be imprisoned under the ordinance, Xinhua reported. Military personnel convicted will have harsher sentences, ranging from 5-30 years.

The king formed a committee of members from various government organisations to draft and update a list of illegal groups.

Delhi HC issues interim stay on fresh appointments to APMC

The Delhi High Court today issued an interim stay on the city government’s decision to appoint someone to replace the head of Agriculture Produce Marketing Committee (APMC) who was recently removed from his post.

Justice Manmohan, while refusing to interfere with the order removing former APMC chief Rajinder Kumar Sharma from his post, directed Delhi government not to make any fresh appointment to replace him till the next date of hearing.

UAE president ‘well’ after stroke: brother

UAE President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al-Nahyan is “well” after an operation last month following a stroke, his brother said today.

“We went through a tough time but we have overcome that,” said Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, who is crown prince of Abu Dhabi.

“Sheikh Khalifa, may God give him long life, is well,” he said.

Sheikh Khalifa, 66, who is also ruler of oil-rich Abu Dhabi, has not made a public appearance since the UAE announced that he underwent an operation following a stroke on January 24.

Will bounce back in Lok Sabha polls: Pilot

Congress respects the people’s verdict in the Assembly polls in Rajasthan, but the party would now work towards its aim of bouncing back in the Lok Sabha elections later this year, Union Minister Sachin Pilot said here.

Pilot, who was recently appointed the state Congress president, today addressed his first rally in Rajasthan ahead of the upcoming parliamentary elections.

Man cooks up story about wife’s death; held for her murder

A 35-year-old man, who allegedly murdered his wife, but cooked up a fake story that she was gangraped and killed by robbers, was today arrested by police.

The accused has been identified as Bharat Ramdas Dhokrat, a resident of Malegaon in Sinnar taluka of Nashik district.

According to Praveen Padwal, District Superintendent of Police (Rural), Bharat had murdered his 27-year-old wife Sheetal following a dispute with her last night.

Cong alleges nexus between BJP, naxals in Chg, seeks CBI probe

Alleging a nexus between some BJP leaders and Naxals in Chhattisgarh, the main opposition party Congress today demanded a CBI probe into “urban network” run by rebels, which was unravelled recently.

Congress members raised this issue through an adjournment notice in Chhattisgarh Assembly, which was accepted.

Beginning the discussion after lunch hour, senior Congress MLA Satyanarayan Sharma said, “The urban channel of the naxals has been operating from capital Raipur for long time and intelligence wing of police department has failed to crack it.”

Draft Jan Lokpal Bill: AAP “fooling” people, says Cong

Hours after the ruling AAP cleared the draft of the Jan Lokpal Bill, Congress today came heavily down on the Arvind Kejriwal-led government, saying it was flouting constitutional norms by not sending the proposed legislation to the Union Home Ministry for approval.

Senior Congress leader Mukesh Sharma said that Delhi government should get clearance from the home ministry before tabling any Bill.

119 cases registered against IAS, IPS officers in 5 yrs: Raman

Chhattisgarh government today revealed on the floor of Legislative Assembly that a total of 119 cases were registered against IAS and IPS officials with Lok Aayog in last five years.

In a written reply to a question by senior Congress member Satyanarayan Sharma, Chief Minister Raman Singh also informed the House that three cases were registered against officials with the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) during the period.

Besides the number of complaints, Sharma also sought to know the number of cases registered on them.

Former Goa CM, others to be quizzed by SIT in mining scam

Former Goa Chief Minister Digamber Kamat and several other government officials, including a suspended Director of Mines, will be questioned by the special investigation team (SIT) in connection with the multi-crore mining scam.

While the recording of statements will begin from tomorrow, Kamat would be questioned by sleuths on February 8, Deputy Inspector General of Police K K Vyas said.

India built 10,250 houses in Sri Lanka in 2013

The Indian government has built 10,250 houses last year for internally displaced people in Sri Lanka’s northern and eastern provinces.

“Another 27,750 houses will be constructed under the same scheme. The funds are being released directly to the beneficiaries,” Finance Minister P Chidambaram said quoting a communication from the Ministry of External Affairs.

He further said that as part of the rehabilitation scheme, 5,000 houses in Northern part of Sri Lanka are being repaired with the assistance provided by India.

Musharraf served with arrest warrant at hospital

Former Pakistani dictator General Pervez Musharraf was today served with an arrest warrant by the police at a military hospital where he is hospitalised.

A special court, constituted to try 70-year-old Musharraf on charges of high treason for imposing emergency in 2007, had issued a warrant on Friday, carrying a bail bond of Rs 2.5 million.

The court had also ordered the Islamabad police to submit a compliance report to the court on February 7.

Baghdad attacks kill 24 as Iraq presses Anbar assault

A series of attacks in and around Baghdad, including a spate of car bombings, killed 24 people today as Iraqi forces pressed an assault against militant-held areas of Anbar province.

The latest bloodshed comes amid a surge in violence that left more than 1,000 people dead in January, the worst such figure in nearly six years, as security forces grapple with near-daily attacks and protracted battles with anti-government fighters.
