Alcohol, smoking and obesity fuel WHO’s global drive to tackle cancer

The World Health Organisation has urged for a global drive to tackle the causes of cancer linked to lifestyle, such as alcohol abuse, sugar consumption and obesity.

It predicted that the number of new cases could soar 70 percent to nearly 25 million a year over the next 20 years, the Guardian reported.

Half of these cases are preventable, says the UN’s public health arm in its World Cancer Report, because they are linked to lifestyle.

It is implausible to think we can treat our way out of the disease, the authors said, arguing that the focus must now be on preventing new cases.

Dowry Harassment forced women to end life

On Monday at Vajpayee Nagar, Neredmet, a woman committed suicide unable to bear the harassment for additional dowry. The victim is identified as C. Meena, 23, wife of Satish, was working at a private firm.

According to Neredmet police, the couple got married in 2010, but had no children. The police further said that the harassment began right after the marriage by Satish and his mother Jayamma.

Mechanism that helps HIV evade antibodies identified

Scientists have claimed to have discovered a mechanism involved in stabilizing key HIV proteins and thereby concealing sites where some of the most powerful HIV neutralizing antibodies bind.

Numerous spikes jut out of the surface of HIV, each containing a set of three identical, bulb-shaped proteins called gp120 that can be closed together or spread apart like the petals of a flower. Some of the most important sites targeted by HIV neutralizing antibodies are hidden when the three gp120s, or the trimer, are closed, and the gp120 trimer remains closed until the virus binds to a cell.

Too much salt ups obesity, inflammation risk in adolescents

Adolescents consuming more than twice the recommended daily allowance of salt increases their high sodium intake that correlates with fatness and inflammation regardless of how many calories they consume, a new study has found.

In the study of 766 healthy teens, 97 percent self-reported exceeding the American Heart Association’s recommendation of consuming less than 1,500 milligrams of sodium daily.

Consumption of added sugar linked to death from cardiovascular disease

Researchers have used national health survey data to examine added sugar consumption as a percentage of daily calories and to estimate association between consumption and cardiovascular disease (CVD).

A new study by Quanhe Yang , Ph.D., of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta, and colleagues indicate that the average percentage of daily calories from added sugar increased from 15.7 percent in 1988-1994 to 16.8 percent in 1999 to 2004 and decreased to 14.9 percent in 2005-2010.

Thief performs sexual act on headless mannequin after robbing store

A man was caught performing a sexual act on a mannequin after robbing the store.

According to the CCTV footage, the suspected thief stole clothes from a shopping centre in Brazil and then was seen kissing the headless dummy’s breast before mounting it while it lay on the floor, Metro.co.uk reported.

The video, where the thief is seen wearing a black T-shirt over his head while committing the act, was posted on LiveLeak.

He was later arrested by police who say he committed the robbery to fund his drug habit. (ANI)

Pesticides linked to increased risk of Parkinson’s

A new study has shown how pesticides may increase the risk of Parkinson’s disease and that people with certain gene variants may be more susceptible to the disease.

The research showed that certain pesticides that inhibit an enzyme called aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) are related to an increased risk of Parkinson’s disease. The enzyme plays a role in detoxifying substances in cells, along with metabolism of alcohol.

Tendulkar, who retired from international cricket on November 16 last year, will be the first sportsman to receive the country’s highest civilian honour.

Prof. Rao is an eminent scientist and a well-recognized international authority on solid state and materials chemistry. He has published over 1,400 research papers and 45 books.

Srinivasan has agreed for Indo-Pak bilateral series: Ashraf

The Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Zaka Ashraf has said that his Indian counterpart N Srinivasan had agreed to India playing a bilateral series with Pakistan at a neutral venue.

“Mr Srinivasan has reassured me they are serious about playing a bilateral series with us even at neutral venues of our choice, but eventually we will need some written assurances and firm guarantees that this series will happen,” Ashraf told the media in Lahore yesterday.

Intermediate second year student commits suicide

On Monday, Prajwal Natkar, 17 years-old, committed suicide by hanging from a ceiling fan in his hostel room. He was a second year intermediate student of Narayana Junior College in KPHB. He was a native of Nagpur was an MPC student.

The incident came to light when his room-mates returned and alerted authorities. The motive behind the suicide could not be ascertained and no suicide note was found. The students alleged pressure from teachers led Prajwal to commit suicide.

Interest-free loans to students from economically backward families –State Govt

Students from the economically weaker sections pursuing general degree courses in the State can now be benefitted through interest-free educational loans.

The State government has made a decision to implement the Rajiv Gandhi Loan Scholarship Scheme for students in general degree and postgraduate degree courses from the academic year 2013-14.

All the colleges run by the State government, universities and aided colleges (for aided courses only) will be applicable for this scholarship excluding professional courses.

Mariyam’s family seeks action against the ‘guilty’

Three-year-old Mariyam Kouser, who has been in a critical condition since December for alleged medical negligence of doctors from Sanjay Gandhi Institute of Trauma and Orthopaedic. Her relatives protested and urged the government to take strict action against the doctors responsible for her condition and also in such other cases, here on February 1.

Two doctors had been terminated, while other two were suspended for medical negligence.

Sensex dips below 20k level, tanks 233 pts in opening trade

The benchmark BSE Sensex today dipped below psychological 20,000-level by falling nearly 233 points in opening trade following weak global trends after disappointing US factory data.

The 30-share barometer fell by 232.88 points, or 1.15 per cent, to trade below 20,000-level at 19,976.38. The index had lost 304.59 points in the previous session.

All the sectoral indices led by realty, IT and metal were major losers, dragging down the benchmark Sensex.

The wide-based National Stock Exchange index Nifty dipped below 6,000-mark by falling 59.80 points, or 1.00 per cent, to 5,942.00.

Magnitude-6.1 earthquake jolts Indonesia

The U.S. Geological Survey says a magnitude-6.1 earthquake has been recorded in Indonesia.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre has no warning in effect.

The Geological Survey report says the quake hit 318 kilometers east of Dili, East Timor, just after 1730 GMT.

The quake’s depth was recorded at 18 kilometers.

Indonesia is located on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” an arc of volcanoes and fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin.

Kohli fourth in ICC Twenty20 rankings

Virat Kohli slipped a rung but was still the best-placed Indian batsman at fourth in the latest ICC Twenty20 rankings issued today.

He was followed by Suresh Raina at fifth and Yuvraj Singh at sixth. Both these batsmen gained a position to move up the list.

However, no Indian found a place in the top-10 of bowlers’ list, while Yuvraj was steady at third in the all-rounders’ chart.
