A new study has shown that a simple handshake predict cancer survival rates, as handgrip strength may be linked to a person’s ability to fight the disease.

Concordia professor Robert Kilgour and his colleagues at the McGill Nutrition and Performance Laboratory confirmed a link between handgrip strength and survival rates.

The test was simple: 203 patients fighting advanced-stage cancers squeezed a device known as a dynamometer with their dominant hand. The instrument then measured peak grip strength.

Qantas cuts 5,000 jobs, posts AUD 235 mn loss in first half

Disclosing a AUD 235 million half- year loss, Australian national airlines Qantas today announced axing 5,000 jobs in a bid to cut costs.

According to media reports, Qantas Chief Executive Alan Joyce said the result was unacceptable and the company would slash 5,000 full-time equivalent positions.

Eight injured in clash between villagers

According to railway police Kachiguda, the deceased B Balreddy, 80, native of Mahboobnagar, trying to cross the railway tracks when he was hit by an oncoming fast train.

He died on the spot. Railway police is further investigating.

US army chief fears complete troop withdrawal would encourage Afghan Taliban

America’s top military officer has said speculation over the US withdrawal from Afghanistan could ‘encourage the enemy’.

General Martin Dempsey said talk of a full withdrawal could lead Afghan forces to make ‘accommodations’ with the Taliban, the BBC reports.

According to the report, President Barack Obama warned that the United States might pull all troops out of Afghanistan in 2014 if a bilateral security agreement (BSA) was not signed.
