AAP targets Mukesh Ambani again

Renewing its attack on Mukesh Ambani, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) today alleged that some of his Reliance Group companies were involved in money laundering in connection with investments by a Singapore-based company.

Addressing a news conference here , AAP leader and senior advocate Prashant Bhushan also alleged that the UPA government did not even bother to investigate the matter and “showered one benefit after another” on Mukesh Ambani.

Don’t know if I will be home minister after elections: Shinde

“I don’t know whether I will be Home Minister after elections.”

This was Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde’s remarks at a Delhi Police function where he launched a web-based application which will allow people to report the loss of any document/article online.

Speaking before a packed hall, Shinde lauded Delhi Police for their “good work during difficult times”.

“I come from Mumbai; there we face a lot of difficulties, but the kind of problems I saw in Delhi is not seen in Mumbai or anywhere else in the country,” he said.

One held at IGI for smuggling in gold biscuits

CISF today apprehended a man who was allegedly trying to smuggle in ten gold biscuits on his arrival from Riyadh at the Indira Gandhi international airport here.

Sources said CISF personnel intercepted one Mohammed Naim, a resident of Muzaffarnagar, UP, when he trying to slip out through the green channel of the customs at the T3 terminal of the airport at about 1 pm.

A total of ten gold biscuits weighing a kilo were recovered from the passengers shoes.

He was later handed over to local authorities for further action, a senior official said.

Calling it one of his best knocks, Pakistan’s centurion Umar Akmal today said the plan was to stay till the end in their crucial Asia Cup match against Afghanistan here today.

Seven arrested for police constable’s murder in Indore

With the arrest of seven persons, police today claimed to have solved the case related to the murder of a constable on the Bypass road here on February 25.

The accused killed police constable Sandeep Singh Bais (36) after he, with two other policemen, tried to intervene following an accident involving two trucks on the Bypass road, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Indore Range Rakesh Gupta said today.

Bais and two other policemen reached the spot where the two trucks had collided. The two drivers were having a heated exchange on the road.

Mahatma Gandhi’s grandson in AAP’s second list

The Aam Aadmi Party Thursday announced its second list of candidates for the Lok Sabha elections, and said Mahatma Gandhi’s grandson Raj Mohan Gandhi will contest from a constituency in the capital.

In the list of 30 AAP candidates, former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Rajan Sushant will contest from Himachal Pradesh’s Kangra district.

Sushant, a parliamentarian from Himachal Pradesh, who was suspended from the BJP for anti-party activities, joined the AAP last week.

Aam Aadmi Party declares its first candidate from Gujarat

Releasing its second list of candidates for the 2014 general election, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) declared its first candidate from Junagadh Lok Sabha seat in Gujarat today.

“Atul Shekhda (46) a farmer from Junagadh will contest against BJP’s charge-sheeted MP Dinu Bogha Solanki, an accused in RTI activist Amit Jethwa’s murder,” AAP spokesperson announced.

However, it is not sure if the BJP will give a ticket to Solanki since the party has not announced who would contest from Junagadh.

The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court today directed the Uttar Pradesh government to file its reply within six weeks in the matter of providing school premises for providing accommodation to police personnel to be deputed for BJP leader Narendra Modi’s rally here on March 2.

A division bench comprising Justice Imtiyaz Murtaza and Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhaya passed this order on a PIL, registered on the basis of a news report.

PCB accepts Miandad’s resignation

The Pakistan Cricket Board has accepted the resignation of former captain, Javed Miandad, ending a six-year association between the two.

Miandad, who had joined the PCB in 2008 in a specially created position of Director-General cricket, had recently sent his resignation to the new chairman of the board, Najam Sethi, saying he wished to part ways.

“The managing committee in its meeting today respected Mr Miandad’s wishes by accepting his resignation with immediate effect,” PCB’s chief operating officer, Subhan Ahmad told a media conference today.

Teenager gang-raped in Delhi, two nabbed

A 16-year-old girl was abducted and gang-raped by two of her neighbours here, police said Thursday. The attackers have been arrested.

The incident took place in north Delhi’s Timarpur area Wednesday night.

The girl had gone to a market when the two men — Kapil, 24, and Kishan, 22 — abducted her and took her to an isolated area. They raped the girl in turns.

“A Delhi Police constable was patrolling in the area when he heard the girl screaming and shouting. He immediately alerted the staff members and the attackers were nabbed from the spot,” a police officer told IANS.

Speed up campaign, Sonia to Congress leaders

Congress president Sonia Gandhi Thursday asked party leaders to accelerate the pace of the campaign for the Lok Sabha elections.

Party sources said Gandhi made the remark at a meeting of the party’s campaign committee for the elections expected to be held April-May.

The meeting discussed the party’s campaign, including the “public reach” programme under which ‘padyatras’ (marches) will be held in all constituencies.

Congress sources said the public reach programme will be held at various villages and blocks.

Bollywood actress-director Nandita Das Thursday urged Indians to break the stereotype that women cannot share the stage with men in journalism.

Launching a report here on the condition of working journalist, she said women in the rural parts of the country remained confined and are never allowed to work in the field they were interested in.

“There is a need for people in the country to break the stereotype that women cannot share the stage with men in journalism,” Das said.

Gang war erupts in Ludhiana market, several rounds fired

Several rounds were fired by members of two groups involved in a gang war in a busy market in the city’s Sarabha Nagar this evening.

Two persons stated to be belonging to the same group were seriously injured in the exchange of fire from guns, revolvers, pistols, police said.

Two cars belonging to these groups were badly damaged.

According to an eyewitness account, both the groups are frequent visitors to the Sarabha Nagar mini market where they had an altercation today on some issue leading to sudden clash in which fire was freely exchanged.

Uma asks Sonia to clear Cong stand on Khurshid’s remark

BJP vice-president Uma Bharti today asked Congress president Sonia Gandhi to clarify her party’s stand on the “impotent” barb against BJP’s PM nominee Narendra Modi by External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid.

“In the last many years, nobody has made such intemperate comment against any politician. The Congress president should clarify whether her party approves of the comment made by Khurshid or whether the observation on Modi was Khurshid’s personal view,” Uma told PTI/Bhasha.

SC slaps Rs.50,000 cost on NCP MLA for case adjournment

The Supreme Court Thursday imposed a cost of Rs.50,000 on a Nationalist Congress Party legislator in Maharashtra for seeking adjournment of the hearing over a petition challenging his election.

The bench of Justice Surinder Singh Nijjar and Justice A.K. Suri granted the adjournment sought by Kisan Shankar Kathore but imposed a cost of Rs.50,000 on him because of the difficulties faced by disabled respondent Arun Dattatray Sawant while travelling to the court from his native place and also for staying in Delhi.

NATO supply line in Pakistan opened up

The ruling party in northwest Pakistan Thursday decided to unblock supplies to NATO troops in neighbouring Afghanistan days after a court ruled the blockade was illegal.

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), which leads a coalition government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, blockaded the NATO supply line to protest US drone strikes in Pakistan’s northwest tribal regions.

Cine actress and TRS MP M Vijaya Shanthi today joined Congress at a time when the possibility of TRS merging with Congress seemed to have hit a roadblock.

Vijaya Shanthi, who is not on the best of terms with TRS chief K Chandrasekhar Rao, today met Congress chief Sonia Gandhi after which the decision of her joining the party was announced.

Hyd: company chairman arrested for service tax evasion

Commissioner of Customs and Central Excise and Service Tax, Hyderabad, today said that chairman of a city-based company has been arrested for evading service tax to the tune of over Rs 20 crore.

The department said in a release without naming the person that it arrested the chairman and managing director of Vijay Mining and Infracorp Pvt Ltd for not depositing service tax collected from the customers.

“The company has also filed VCES declaration for some period and has defaulted on paying 50 per cent of the declared amount,” the release said.

Software engineer commits suicide in Delhi

A 26-year-old software engineer committed suicide by hanging from the ceiling fan at his home here, police said.

Neeraj Kumar, who worked in a private company in Hyderabad, was found hanging from a ceiling fan by a family member at his house at Aman Vihar area in west Delhi Thursday afternoon.

Police said Kumar was to get married in March this year and did not leave behind any suicide note. The reason behind the extreme step was unclear.

Kumar came back home 20 days ago.

Got input from CIA about wanted IM terrorist: Police to court

The CIA has tipped off Delhi Police about the presence of a “wanted terrorist” of Indian Mujahideen (IM) in Bihar or Kerala who could be arrested soon, a local court has been informed.

Delhi Police has also sought 15 more days time to complete its probe against IM co-founder Yasin Bhatkal and his close aide Asadullah Akhtar in the 2010 Jama Masjid terror attack case.

V K Singh to join BJP

Former Army Chief Gen VK Singh, who was engaged in a long-drawn battle with the Government over his age issue, will join the BJP on Saturday.

The decision comes months after he shared dais with BJP’s Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi at an ex-servicemen rally in Rewari in Haryana.

However, he had refused to confirm his plans to join the BJP stating that he was busy assisting social activist Anna Hazare in his movement.

It is, however, not yet clear whether BJP would field him in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
