Shooting at Florida college campus

A shooting incident was reported on a college campus in the US state of Florida Thursday.

The shooting occurred in a parking lot on campus in the college, Xinhua quoted the Eastern Florida State College stating in a tweet. “The Palm Bay campus, one of the college’s four campuses, is locked down and people are asked to stay inside with doors locked.”

Govt working on health plan for Delhi: Kejriwal

The Delhi Government is working on an ambitious health plan for the city to boost its medical infrastructure and provide better facilities to public.

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal made this announcement today at a press conference, stating that details of the plan is being worked out.

Kejriwal, at the same time, also hinted at scrapping a few hospital projects which have been lying in the cold storage for many years despite being granted approvals long back.

Italian company Moto Morini to launch two new bikes in India

Italian bike-maker Moto Morini today said it will launch two motorcycle models — Granpasso and Scrambler — at the forthcoming Auto Expo in Greater Noida.

The motorcycles will be imported and distributed in India by Vardenchi Motorcycles, the company said in a release.

Last year Moto Morini had tied up with Mumbai-based custom bike maker Vardenchi to design and manufacture an ultra premium motorcycle.

This motorcycle will be unveiled at the Auto Expo, which will also mark the official entry of the joint venture, the release said.

BYPL seeks funds from Govt, says some areas may face outages

Reliance Infra-backed power distribution company BSES Yamuna Power Ltd has informed Delhi Government that areas in Central and East Delhi may face eight to 10 hours of power cuts from Saturday as the company was facing serious fund crunch to buy electricity.

In a letter to Delhi’s Power Secretary Puneet Goel, BYPL sought immediate financial assistance from the government to deal with the “difficult” situation as it was not being able to make payments to various state-run power generators including NTPC and NHPC.

Govt keeping eye on “communal forces”: Siddaramaiah

Karnataka government today said it will not allow communal forces to create disharmony and keep an on “elements” spreading hatred through social media and mobile phones.

“We will not allow communal forces like Bajrang Dal, Vishwa Hindu Parishad, Sriram Sene and others to create disharmony. We will take every step to curb them,” Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said, while winding up the debate on the motion of thanks to the Governor for his address in the Assembly.

Communal forces were spreading hatred for political gains in the light of the coming Lok Saba polls, he said.

2 arrested for robbing businessman of Rs 36 lakh

Delhi Police’s Special Cell today claimed to have cracked a case in which a businessman was robbed of around Rs 36 lakh on Azad Pur flyover on January 13.

Two residents of Delhi, identified as Nitin Kumar (28) and Upender Gupta alias Bittoo (23), were arrested on Tuesday in this connection, police said, adding a country-made pistol of .12 bore and five live cartridges were seized from them.

Police have seized a Hyundai Accent car bought by Nitin using the robbed money. They have also recovered Rs 6.5 lakh and foreign currencies worth Rs 5 lakh from Nitin’s house.

Chinese man uses first-class air ticket to eat free meals

In a bizarre case, a Chinese man bought a first-class plane ticket and re-booked it 300 times to have free meals at the VIP lounge of an airport in the country.

The frequent diner purchased the first-class, fully refundable ticket aboard Eastern China Airline and then re-booked his ticket over and over again to have free meals.

He used the ticket to gain access to the Xi’an International Airport’s VIP lounge, where high-rolling travellers dine for free, according to a report in the Chinese-language newspaper Kwong Wah Yit Poh in Malaysia.

Court asks Lalu to record statement in fodder scam case

A special CBI court today asked RJD supremo Lalu Prasad, who was convicted in a fodder scam case and facing charges in four others, to record his statement in a case on February 6.

The court of Sitaram Prasad asked Lalu, who is out on bail, to appear before it on February 6 and record his statement in connection with RC 64 A/96 case pertaining to fraudulent withdrawal of Rs 84.53 lakh from Deogarh Treasury during his tenure as Chief Minister in the 1990s.

District court acquits Swami Sachidanand of murder charge

A district court today acquitted godman Swami Sachidanand here giving him the benefit of doubt in a firing case, in which one person was shot dead in 2006.

Acquitting Swami Sachidanand, Additional District Judge M S Bhatt said today that the prosecution has not been able to establish the charge of murder against Sachidanand.

The case dates back to July 17, 2006, when a gang of robbers had attacked Swami Sachidanand’s Bhaktiniketan ashram in Dhantli in Petlad taluka of Anand district.

AAP is a “self-certifying” govt: BJP

BJP today took a dig at the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) Delhi government headed by Arvind Kejriwal for its self-certification.

“AAP is good as it gives a certificate to itself. Kejriwal government has become a self-certifying government,” BJP Spokesperson Prakash Javadekar said, while ridiculing Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal commending his own government on the completion of one month.

He said if one made allegations against them they rejected them and indulged in fudging of figures.

US ending Myanmar refugee program

The United States is winding down a program which has helped to resettle 73,000 refugees from Myanmar over almost a decade, a US official confirmed.

After being introduced in 2005 primarily to help Karen and Hmong minorities that have been displaced in Myanmar, also known as Burma, “we’re reaching the natural conclusion” of the program, State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said.

Yahoo email account passwords stolen

Yahoo has said that usernames and passwords of its email customers have been stolen and used to access accounts, but the company isn’t saying how many accounts have been affected.

Yahoo is the second-largest email service worldwide, after Google’s Gmail, according to the research firm comScore. There are 273 million Yahoo mail accounts worldwide, including 81 million in the US.

Yahoo Inc. Yesterday said in a blog post on its breach that “The information sought in the attack seems to be names and email addresses from the affected accounts’ most recent sent emails.”

Militants assault government building in Baghdad

Gunmen and suicide bombers staged a brazen assault on a government building in Baghdad, officials said, killing two people in the latest such attack in the heart of the Iraqi capital by militants trying to undermine further the Shiite-led government’s shaky authority.

The firefight at a state-run transportation company was one of several attacks that left 11 dead across the city, and came as Iraq grapples with a stubborn insurgency in the country’s western Anbar province. Government troops are trying to oust al-Qaida-linked fighters and their allies from cities in the area.

US to seek death penalty for accused Boston bomber

The United States is to seek the death penalty for accused Boston bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev if he is convicted of involvement in the deadly attack, Attorney General Eric Holder said today.

“The nature of the conduct at issue and the resultant harm compel this decision,” Holder said in a statement on the prosecution of the 20-year-old, a US citizen from a Chechen Muslim family.

Three people were killed and around 260 wounded on April 15 last year when two bombs made of explosives-packed pressure cookers exploded near the finish line of the Boston marathon.

Transgenders get government jobs in Pakistan

In a first, the Sindh government in Pakistan has employed transgendered persons in different departments.

Sindh Minister for Social Welfare and Development, Rubina Qaimkhani confirmed appointment of Riffay Khan, Muskaan and Anjum.

Riffay holds a masters degree, whereas Muskaan and Anjum have both completed their schooling up to matriculation.

According to official estimates there are around 500,000 “gender confused” people in Pakistan and these include eunuchs, hermaphrodites, transsexuals, transvestites and homosexuals in addition to castrated men.

US says Syria ‘dragging its feet’ on chemical weapons

The United States has accused the Syrian regime of dragging its feet over its chemical weapons stockpile and urged Damascus to immediately hand over the cache as promised for destruction.

Top US officials voiced concern that a deadline set with Damascus to remove the most dangerous chemical arms from the country had been missed by a month.

“Syria must immediately take… The necessary actions to comply with its obligations,” said State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki.

US warns Moscow of concern over cruise missile test

The United States has raised concerns with Moscow over a reported Russian test of a cruise missile and is evaluating whether it breaks a 1987 treaty, a US official said today.

Washington has raised “the possibility of… A violation,” State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said, amid reports that Russia had tested a new ground-launched cruise missile.

The New York Times said today that Moscow had begun testing the new missile as early as 2008, and that the State Department’s senior arms control official Rose Gottemoeller had repeatedly raised the issue with Moscow since May.

Missing man’s body found

The mystery surrounding the disappearance of a 25-year-old man was solved today after his parents identified his body, which was recovered from a drain.

The body was found in a drain at Chhatikara in Vrindaban police station area when it was being cleaned.

Subhash alias Pintu, who worked as a driver in Delhi, had visited his native place on January 22.

His father alleged that he was called by a girl to a particular place, and when he had gone there he was killed by her father and his associates.

Delhi varsity students plan demonstration outside Secretariat

A group of Delhi University students has decided to stage a demonstration outside the Delhi Secretariat tomorrow to press for their demands of affordable education, transport and accommodation before the Chief Minister.

“The Delhi University students today suffer from massive problems of transport, absence of hostels and unbridled rent in private accommodation and of course, the mounting problem of infrastructure in colleges,” said Sunny Kumar of All India Students’ Association (AISA).

Nigeria market attack displaced 2,000: relief agency

More than 2,000 people were forced from their homes after a market attack in northeast Nigeria blamed on Boko Haram militants that killed at least 52, a relief agency said.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in the region said 4,000 people were “affected” by Sunday’s attack in Kawuri village, Borno state, without giving further detail.

NEMA spokesman Abdulkadir Ibrahim said that in addition “over 2,000 internally displaced people (IDPs) are camped in” a college and primary school in Konduga district.

Libya sues Goldman over failed deals worth USD 1 billion

Libya’s sovereign wealth fund is suing banking giant Goldman Sachs for “deliberately exploiting” its position to make USD 350 million profit on USD 1 billion worth of failed derivative trades, London’s High Court announced.

The Libyan Investment Authority (LIA), which was set up in 2006 to handle the country’s oil revenues, accuses the investment bank of gaining the “trust and confidence” of its inexperienced managers, before advising them to enter into “inadequately documented” derivative trades into companies including Citigroup, EdF, Santander and ENI.

Pak PM Sharif orders more security for Shia pilgrims to Iran

Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif today said enhanced security including air travel would be provided to Shia pilgrims travelling to Iran through the restive southwestern Balochistan province.

The premier admitted during a visit to the capital city of the troubled province that the pilgrims travelling to Iran faced serious security threats to their lives.
