Ready with charge sheet against Italian marines: NIA to court

The NIA today told a special court here that it was “ready” with a charge sheet against two Italian marines, accused of killing two Indian fishermen off Kerala coast in 2012, and would file it after the Supreme Court decides on the issue raised by the Italian government.

According to the National Investigation Agency, the apex court is scheduled to hear the plea of Italian government challenging invocation of anti-terrorism law against its two marines on February 3.

Self Employment Scheme for minorities, last date today

Today is the last date to avail the self employment scheme launched by the state government for minorities and other weaker sections. However it is likely to be extended further. According to highly placed sources the deadline can be extended for 10 days.

Extension was demanded by SC, ST, BC, women and physically challenged besides minorities. Nearly 4000 applications have been received by the Minority Finance Corporation so far, while 300 applications were received from Hyderabad.

German Bakery blast: HC dismisses witnesses’ plea against ATS

The Bombay High Court today dismissed an application filed by two witnesses in the February 2010 Pune German Bakery bomb blast case seeking protection from officers of state Anti Terrorism Squad (ATS).

A division bench of Justices V K Tahilramani and P N Deshmukh dismissed the application.

The witnesses had alleged that they were coerced into giving false statements against lone convict Himayat Baig before a trial court.

Can’t say whether crisis averted: Omar on NC-Congress tussle

“I cannot say whether the crisis has been averted,” Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said today about the tussle with his coalition partner, the Congress, over the creation of new administrative units in the state.

Omar’s cryptic remark came two days ahead of a crucial meeting of his Cabinet in Jammu at which a report of a Cabinet Sub-Committee on such units will be considered amidst reports that the issue had snowballed into a confrontation between coalition partners.

Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee today dubbed CBI as the ‘Congress Bureau of Investigation’ for apparently giving a “clean chit” to the erstwhile Left Front regime on Nandigram firing in 2007.

Woman burnt to death alleging withcraft

A tribal woman was allegedly burnt to death after she was accused of practising witchcraft at Jambani in West Midnapore district, the police said today.

The hut of 65-year-old Srimati Sabar was burnt last night when she was asleep at her hut at Barsol village, the police said.

Bimala Sabar and her husband Subol Sabar were arrested on the basis of a complaint lodged by Srimati Sabar’s son.

Bimala and Subol had complained the elderly woman of having done black magic which was the cause of their grandson’s sickness, the police said.

HC to hear Jethmalani’s plea against expulsion from BJP in May

The Delhi High Court today fixed May 2 as the date for hearing plea of noted criminal lawyer Ram Jethmalani challenging his expulsion from primary membership of BJP on charges of “breach of discipline”.

The hearing on the law suit of Jethmalani, 89, was deferred after Joint Registrar Brijesh Kumar Garg of the High Court was informed that the report, regarding the service of notices on BJP Parliamentary board members, has not been received.

SP sets up coordination panel for LS polls

Samajwadi Party today constituted a state-level coordination committee to be headed by state party chief Akhilesh Yadav for effective monitoring of affairs related to Lok Sabha elections.

The 18-member committee included ministers Shivpal Singh Yadav, Ahmad Hasan, Ram Govind Chowdhury, Om Prakash Singh, Balram Yadav, Rajendra Chowdhury, Gayatri Prasad Prajapati and Rajpal Kashyap among others, a party release said here.

The committee would keep an eye on activities and performance of Lok Sabha candidates and look into their problems, if any, and try to redress them.

Wrong to draw parallels between 1984 and Godhra riots: Badal

Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal today said it was wrong to compare Godhra riots to 1984 “carnage”, saying what happened in Gujarat was a result of clash between two communities while “carnage” of Sikhs was carried out by the then ruling Congress at the Centre.

“The unfortunate incident that took place in Godhra city of Gujarat was riot while the killings in 1984 was a carnage of the Sikhs undertaken at the behest of the then Congress government at the Centre,” Badal told reporters on the sidelines of Sangat Darshan programme in Malout Assembly here.

Man gets death sentence for killing wife, four daughters

A local court here today awarded death sentence to a man for killing his wife and four young daughters as he suspected the wife’s fidelity.

The court of Additional District Judge (5th) Daya Ram held Deen Dayal Tiwari guilty of the murders on a petition filed by his brother Dinanath Tiwari.

The wife Siya Lali was 30 years old at the time of the murder while the daughters were aged between two and eight.

Sex racket busted in Kanpur, 18 arrested

Police today arrested eight girls, including three minors, and 10 others allegedly involved in an inter-state sex racket in Shyam Nagar area here.

City Senior Superintendent of Police Yashasvi Yadav told reporters that eight girls, including three minors, along with a woman kingpin, three middlemen and six customers, were arrested from Shyam Nagar area.

The racket was being run by Sara Subahno from her house in Shyam Nagar with the help of middlemen Jeetendra, Rakesh Singh and Nagendra Nath, he said.

8-month-pregnant woman, husband commit suicide

An eight-month-pregnant woman and her husband committed suicide at Mandi Dhanaura in the district today.

Shashi (24) of Gandhi Nagar locality, allegedly consumed poison. Seeing Shashi dead, her husband Sonu (27) shot himself with his pistol, Circle Officer Dhanora Nishank Sharma said.

He died on way to hospital, he said.

Sharma said it seemed that the incident took place after a dispute between the couple.

No FIR has been lodged by the couple’s family yet.

The bodies have been sent for postmortem and investigation is happening, he said.

People won’t spare Cong for fixing LPG cap in first place: BJP

BJP today said it was the UPA government which had in the first place imposed a cap on subsidised domestic LPG cylinders and claimed that the people of the country would neither spare nor forgive it for the same even though it has now agreed to increase the number of such cylinders.

“Congress government wants people to cheer about their announcement of increasing the cap of subsidised LPG cylinders from nine to 12 per family per year.

“(But) people are in no mood to appreciate. They are instead asking a simple question, ‘who brought in the cap of six cylinders in the first place?’

Two cab drivers arrested for outraging modesty of women

The Cyberabad Police arrested two cab drivers today on charges of allegedly outraging the modesty of two women and robbing them after picking them up in their car near the Rajiv Gandhi International (RGI) Airport at Shamshabad here.

Cab drivers R Jagan and T Srinivas, who had observed the movement of working women of RGI Airport during night shifts, targeted them when they travelled alone in cabs during nights, the police said.

73-yr-old advocate uses law expertise to fake car papers, held

A 73-year-old advocate, who allegedly used his expertise in law to make fake documents of vehicles stolen by him has been arrested, police said today.

Dhani Ram Mittal alias Puran Chand (73) was nabbed on Tuesday by the anti-auto theft squad of North-West district police. A stolen car has also been recovered from his possession.

On a tip off, a police team laid a trap at Jehangirpuri Metro Station and stopped his car, which on verification was found to be stolen, a senior Delhi Police officer said.

Eight houses gutted, 24 families rendered homeless

Eight heavily timbered houses were gutted and nearly two dozen families were rendered homeless when a fire broke out in a village, 60-km from here, today.

The houses were reduced to ashes as the blaze engulfed Bareyon village in Panog Gram Panchayat at Kotkhai, police said.

Some two dozen families were left shelterless, they said adding the total loss was estimated at Rs six crore.

Chief Parliamentary Secretary Rohit Thakur, who represents the Kotkhai assembly constituency, directed the administration to provide immediate relief to the affected families.

School director gets lifer for murdering a lady teacher

The 38-year-old director of a private school in the district was sentenced to life imprisonment today for killing a lady teacher employed in his institution.

While sentencing the director, Arun Panchal under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code IPC various Sections of the SC / ST Act, the Court of Special Judge R P Sharma also ordered him to pay compensation of Rs 10,000 to the victim’s mother.

The prosecution counsel, Indrajeet Singh Bhatia said that Panchal who had been running a school about 30 km from here had killed the lady teacher in the jungles near Simrol on June 27, 2011.

Syrian government, opposition discuss security: Brahimi

The Syria government and the opposition discussed the security situation on the ground on the sixth day of ongoing peace talks, as their respective delegations participated in the joint meeting Thursday here, UN-Arab League Special Envoy to Syria Lakhdar Brahimi said.

The two sides had a “very long meeting” this morning, Xinhua quoted the international negotiator of the ongoing talks as saying during a press conference late afternoon.

According to sources from the UN Information Service of Geneva, there were no meetings held this afternoon.
