Newly elected Delhi Assembly to meet today

The first session of the newly elected Delhi Assembly will begin from today. The session will come to end on January 7.

On the first day of the session, newly elected MLAs will take oath. The Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party government will also seek a vote of confidence on the floor of the assembly during this period. The election of the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker has been fixed for January 3.

Kolkata gangrape case: Civil society members to meet Governor Narayanan

With Kolkata Police refusing to hand over the body of a 16-year-old rape victim to her father for cremation, protesting civil society members have decided to approach West Bengal Governor M.K.Narayanan to seek his intervention in the matter.

Media reports said the meeting with Governor Narayanan is expected to take place at around 12.30 p.m. on Wednesday.

The girl, who was allegedly gang-raped two months ago, died in hospital on Tuesday, more than a week after she set herself on fire.

Shutdown in Telangana district over change in minister’s portfolio

Karimnagar district of Telangana region is observing a shutdown Wednesday to protest Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy’s move in taking away the legislative affairs portfolio from Civil Supplies Minister D. Sridhar Babu.

Shops, business establishments and educational institutions remained closed while buses of state-owned Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) went off the roads in the district on a call given by the district unit of the Congress party.

Congress workers took to streets raising slogans against the chief minister, burning his effigies and tyres.

Two powerful bombs explode near Imphal

Two powerful bombs exploded in Shingjamei area near here, police said.

The Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) were exploded through a remote-controlled device when people were celebrating New Year Day around 5.30 AM.

A team of police and CRPF rushed to the spot and cordoned off the area before launching a search operation.

Different social organisations have appealed to militants not to explode bombs in crowded area.

Telangana Bill to rock Andhra Assembly session starting Jan 3

The Winter session of Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly, resuming on January 3, is expected to generate much heat as the debate on the draft Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation bill, 2013 is on the agenda.

The Winter session of the Assembly began on December 12 and the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) of the house had decided to take up a debate on the draft bill, but that did not happen due to the din over the issue. The Assembly was adjourned on December 19 for resumption on January 3.

Traffic medians around Charminar, conspiracy against push-cart vendors

Installation of traffic medians is in full swing at the prime roads of old city around Charminar. But these road dividers are becoming a menace for the commuters. Instead of ensuring free flow of traffic, these medians increase traffic congestion. From Mandi Meer Alam road to Charminar and from Makkah masjid to bus stand road, medians have been installed. Johnson warns England not to back away

Destructive paceman Mitchell Johnson has set the scene for a tetchy final Ashes Test by claiming today that England’s batsmen are deliberately backing away from fast bowlers as an unsettling tactic.

Country singer Blake Shelton has laughed off reports suggesting that he is splitting up from his wife Miranda Lambert.

The 37-year-old singer was hit with divorce rumours last week when some tabloids reported that the couple were heading for a USD 100 million divorce because of Blake’s excessive drinking, reported Aceshowbiz.

“Wow Miranda Lambert and I are so excited about our 100 million dollars. Who knew you could make so much money just by divorcing?,” Shelton wrote mocking the rumours.

Book release function in Urdu University

Prof. Shameem Hanafi of Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi will deliver an extension lecture on “The frontiers of Urdu Language and Literature” at Maulana Azad National Urdu University. Prof. Mohammed Miyan, Vice Chancellor of Urdu University will preside over the function and will release the book on “Abul Kalam Azad: Vision and Action” written by Prof. B. Shaik Ali, former Vice Chancellor of Goa University. This book has been translated into Urdu by Dr. Abul Kalam, Head of the Dept. of Urdu at Maulana Azad National Urdu University.

‘Shocked’ Kerry Katona expecting baby girl, not boy as she thought

Kerry Katona, who was initially told by doctors that she may be pregnant with a baby boy, has revealed that she is actually expecting a baby girl.

The Atomic Kitten singer told OK! Magazine that when she went for her 12-week scan, she was told that there was an 86 percent chance it was a boy, Contactmusic reported.

Even though one can’t properly tell the sex of the child until 20 weeks, she and her former rugby player fiance George Kay took it as a definite, she asserted.

Indian’s body stuck in Oman

The body of an Indian national, who committed suicide in Oman, is stuck in that Gulf nation due to incomplete paperwork and cannot be sent to India, according to media reports.

The body of Ashokan, 52, who hailed from the south Indian state of Kerala, hanged himself Dec 25 in a store room near his residence in Oman’s capital Muscat. The body is now stuck back in Muscat due to lack of necessary papers, the Times Of Oman reported Tuesday.

Telangana minister divested of legislative affairs portfolio

A couple of days before the Andhra Pradesh assembly is to begin a debate on the bifurcation bill, a cabinet minister from Telangana region was Tuesday divested of the legislative affairs portfolio.

Civil Supplies Minister D. Sridhar Babu, a supporter of a separate Telangana state, was also holding the legislative affairs portfolio.

In a move which evoked strong reaction from Telangana leaders, Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy handed over the legislative affairs portfolio to Primary Education Minister S. Sailajanath.

For trade talks, Pak should first remove restrictions: India

India today made it clear that resumption of talks with Pakistan on normalisation of commercial ties can only happen after it fulfils its commitment of removing trade restrictions.

There is a “sequential road map” and it was decided during the last meeting of Indo-Pak commerce secretaries that Pakistan will remove all restrictions pertaining to trade and commerce, the spokesperson in External Affairs Ministry said.

The next round of talks can only take place when the first step is completed, he said.

Payments made via Aadhaar crosses one crore-mark in Dec

Transactions made through the Aadhaar payment bridge system (APBS) of the National Payment Corporation of India (NPCI) has reached a new milestone with the total number of transactions in December crossing the 1 crore mark, the corporation said today.

Bulk of these transactions pertains to direct benefit transfer for LPG subsidy, it said.

The Aadhaar mapper located at NPCI has close to 5 crore numbers mapped to various banks and government departments make payments to about 5 lakh beneficiaries each day using just the Aadhaar number as the address.

APSRTC decides to make contract employees permanent

The year 2014 would be auspicious for the contract employees of APSRTC. The Govt. of A.P. has decided to regularize the services of the contract and temporary employees of APSRTC. Nearly 24, 000 employees will benefit from it. It is said that the orders will be issued in 2 or 3 days. APSRTC Employees’ Union and RTC Telangana Mazdoor Union have welcomed this decision of the Govt. They termed it as the new year gift and said that the struggle of the unions has been successful.

More pacers in team because of conditions: Sanjay Patel

India have included an extra pacer in the Test squad for New Zealand as the conditions there would be more favourable for the fast bowlers, said Indian Cricket Board’s secretary Sanjay Patel.

“There are always different experiments going on. With that thing in mind, as well as the requirement of the team and place, more pace bowlers have been selected,” said Patel after the selectors chose a 17-member squad for New Zealand tour here today.

Rizwan Ahmad takes over as UP DGP

The Uttar Pradesh government has appointed Rizwan Ahmad as the new Director General of Police, replacing Devraj Nagar who retired today.

Ahmad, a 1978-batch IPS officer, will, however, have a short tenure as he is set to retire in February.

On taking charge as the new DGP, Ahmad said the state police was capable of dealing with all the challenges.

“I will do everything to boost the morale of police, which is capable of dealing with all situations,” he said.

Three other IPS officers — Himmat Singh, D D Mishra and R K Rai — also retired.

Free bus travel for girl students in Haryana from new year

In a new year bonanza for girl students in Haryana, the state government will provide free travel facility to them in the state owned buses.

Free passes will be issued to all the girls of Haryana studying in various schools, colleges and institutes in the state and are recognised by the state government or are affiliated with any University or Board in the state, Transport Minister Aftab Ahmed said here today.

Haryana is infamous for its skewed sex ratio.

However, students of distance learning mode will not be get the benefit of the scheme.
