Delhi Government to install new night shelters

Taking stock of the chilly weather prevailing in the Capital, the Delhi Government on Wednesday announced its decision to install new night shelters, and convert the old ones into the porta cabin night shelters.

Addressing a press conference, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced, “The weather is very chilly here and it is a duty of any government to take care of people who are unprivileged. So we had a discussion on this issue and we have taken several decisions on it.

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Prashant Bhushan said on Wednesday that it is now gearing up for its next target- to contest in the 2014 general elections, after its impressive performance in Delhi Assembly Elections. Karnataka, Punjab, Maharashtra enter Ranji quarters

Karnataka and Punjab from Group A and Maharashtra from Group C qualified for the quarterfinals of the Ranji Trophy Wednesday on the third day of the last league phase.

New Year’s night sees 724 drivers ticketed in Delhi

A total of 724 motorists were ticketed in Delhi for violating traffic norms while five of them had to go behind bars for haphazard driving during the New Year celebrations.

Of these motorists, 67 were challaned (issued tickets) for dangerous driving and 532 prosecuted for drunken driving Tuesday night.

A total 238 car drivers, 265 mobike riders and 12 people plying auto-rickshaws were prosecuted for violating traffic rules.

Bengal gang rape victim cremated amid political row

A 16-year-old girl, who died after she was twice raped by a gang and set ablaze, was Wednesday cremated amid a raging political row over what protestors called police attempt at her “forcible cremation”.

The girl was allegedly gang raped twice in October. She breathed her last Tuesday at a city hospital after she was admitted with severe burn injuries Dec 23.

Believed to have attempted suicide, the victim in her dying declaration named two of the rape accused of setting her on fire.

Parliament to pass Telangana bill : Jaipal Reddy

Union Science and Technology Minister S. Jaipal Reddy Wednesday said the bill for formation of a separate Telangana state will be passed by parliament in the first week of February.

Six Seemandhra MPs to go on two-day fast

A two-day “Sankalp Diksha” from January 3 would be launched by six Congress MPs belonging to the Seemandhra region in protest against the Centre’s decision to divide the State to form separate Telangana State.
The “Sankalp Diksha” would be held on January 3 and 4 at Indira Park here. Lagadapati Rajagopal, Rayapati Sambasiva Rao, Undavalli Arun Kumar, Harsha Kumar, Ananta Venkatarami Reddy and Sabbam Hari would sit on the Diksha.

‘Tainted MLAs’ inducted into Karnataka ministry

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah Wednesday expanded his cabinet, inducting party legislators D.K. Shivakumar and R. Roshan Baig. For over seven months, the chief minister resisted pressure from them to be made ministers as they face corruption charges.

While Shivakumar faces charges of illegal mining, Baig is accused of land grabbing.

TDP MLA raps CM for vindictive action

TDP legislator Revuri Chandrasekhar Reddy today said it was astonishing to note that Legislative Affairs portfolio of Sridhar Babu was changed when Assembly was about to meet in next two days.
Speaking to the media here, Revuri said nobody would support the erroneous decision of Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy. It was duty and responsibility of the Chief Minister to protect sanctity of the Assembly. The Telangana Bill would have to be sent back to the President by January 23 whether a debate took place or not in the Assembly, he said.

Bengal gang rape victim was set on fire by attackers

A 16-year-old gang rape victim, who died of high degree burns, said in her dying declaration her attackers set her afire, a top officer of the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate said Wednesday.

“In her dying declaration (Tuesday) before a doctor and a police officer, the girl said Ratan Sil and Minta Sil, (accused in the rape case), set her on fire,” Additional Deputy Commissioner (Airport Division) Nimbalkar Santosh Uttamrao told IANS.

Police have now initiated murder charges against the accused, six of whom are behind bars, he said.

Rs 3600 cr VVIP chopper deal with AgustaWestland scrapped

India today cancelled its Rs 3,600 crore deal with Anglo-Italian firm AgustaWestland for supply of 12 VVIP choppers to the Air Force in view of charges that kickbacks to the tune of Rs 360 crore were paid in it.

The decision to scrap the 2010 deal was taken nearly (rpt) nearly a year after reports surfaced that two top officials of the company had allegedly paid bribes to bag the contract. Former IAF chief S P Tyagi is one of the accused in the case, which is being probed by CBI.

Man electrocuted to death in Ibrahimpatnam

A 21-year-old-man died of electrocution at Ibrahimpatnam on Tuesday night hours.

According to the Ibrahimpatnam police, Deceased identified as Parmesh, son of sadu patel a laborer, resident of Eliminedu of Ibrahimpatnam was trying to on a switch of flex box when he got electrocuted, the police said. He was rushed to a nearest private hospital but he was declared dead by the doctors. (INN)
