Dawoodi Bohra spiritual head dead

The spiritual head of the Dawoodi Bohra community, Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin, passed away here Friday following a cardiac arrest, an official said.

He was 102 years old. The end came at Saifee Mahal, his residence in Malabar Hill in south Mumbai.

As soon as the news spread, thousands of grieving Dawoodi Bohra community members rushed to Saifee Mahal.

Immune cells could mend broken hearts

A new research has revealed that immune system plays an important role in the heart’s response to injury, suggesting that embryonic macrophages in the heart promote healing after injury.

Now, researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis have shown that two major pools of immune cells are at work in the heart. Both belong to a class of cells known as macrophages. One appears to promote healing, while the other likely drives inflammation, which is detrimental to long-term heart function.

Man kills wife’s lover

A man named Ravi killed his wife’s lover after catching them together at his residence in Tulasinagar of Borabanda. His wife Swarna had an affair with an autorickshaw driver Sidhu aged 35 years. Ravi beheaded Sidhu then stuffed the body in a gunny bag and threw it on the roadside.
A police patrol found the body, and a manhunt was launched for the killer.

Delhi HC issues restraint order on media in case against ex-SC judge

The Delhi High Court has restrained media from publishing or televising contents of sexual harassment allegations against former Supreme Court judge Swatanter Kumar.

The court ordered two news channels and a daily to delete offending contents from their reports relating to the case.

The high court has also asked media not to carry the photograph of Justice Swatanter Kumar in any news items.

The restraint order would be effective till February 24, the next date of hearing of the case.

CBI registers five cases against Delhi Jal Board

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered five cases against 13 officials of the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) for alleged irregularities in the supply of equipments for sewage treatment plants.

Of the 13 officials, eight are executive engineers and five are junior engineers.

A CBI spokesperson said searches were conducted at 21 locations in Delhi, Ghaziabad and Noida before the cases were filed.

DJB officials allegedly conspired with a private firm to cheat the government to the tune of six crore rupees by supplying spurious and cheap items.

51 released Indian fishermen reach Tamil Nadu

Coast Guard officials have handed over 51 Tamil fishermen released from Lankan jails to fisheries officials at Karaikkal on Thursday evening.

Tamil Nadu Fisheries Minister Jayapal, Nagapattinam Collector Munusamy and fisheries officials welcomed the fishermen back.

Twenty one fishermen are from Karaikal, 20 from Pudukottai and 10 from Nagapattinam. They were brought back on the Coast Guard ship Vishwasth.

Family members said they were happy to see fishermen returning to their villages in Jagadapattinam, Kottaipattinam and Nagapattinam.

16-year-old Bulandshahr girl set on fire for resisting rape

A 16-year-old girl was set on fire after she allegedly resisted a rape attempt in Uttar Pradesh”s Bulandshahr area. The incident was reported from the Pahasu area of Bulandshahr District.

Doctors attending to her at the Aligarh Medical College said that she has suffered 90 per cent burns and may not survive. The accused, a local, allegedly tried to rape the teen at her house. NSA collects 200mn SMSes-a-day worldwide for ‘snoop-ops’

The US’ intelligence agency reportedly collected 200 million text messages a day worldwide as part of its wider mass surveillance programme.

According to classified documents revealed by whistleblower Edward Snowden, the National Security Agency used the messages to extract data including location, contact networks and credit card details.

The data collected by the NSA, under the programme codenamed ‘Dishfire’, had been used by its UK counterpart, the GCHQ, to search the metadata of “untargeted and unwarranted” communications belonging to people in the UK, the Guardian reports.

Inspector Mohammed Riyazuddin told that on the complaint of a local resident, 70 year old Jagdeesh Prasad Jaiswal was taken into custody. After primary investigations it was revealed that the accused was running finance business illegally. He lent money on huge interest and doubled interest money after 3 months. UP girl torched for resisted to rape

On Thursday, a 16-year-old girl was set on fire in Uttar Pradesh’s Bulandshahr district after she allegedly refuse to give in to a rape attempt.

The girl is a student of Class 9, has suffered 90 per cent burns and is struggling for life at the Aligarh Medical College.

SSC examination timetable pronounced

The Board of Secondary School Education of Andhra Pradesh has announced the detailed timetable of S.S.C. examinations in the state. The Exams are scheduled from March 26 to April 12 and all the papers will commence from 9.30 a.m. to 12 p.m. The last half an hour will be exclusive for objective paper.

A new study has provided important information about transmission of human leishmaniasis, which is a group of infectious diseases that kills more than 100,000 people a year.

Professor Deborah Smith of the Centre for Immunology and Infection at University of York, working with colleagues at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute and Charles University in Prague, has shown that Leishmania parasites reproduce sexually in the wild.

The research is a significant step forward in understanding how leishmaniasis is spread in endemic regions.

Govt.’s Self Employment Scheme: date extended

Government has extended the date to avail the self employment scheme launched by the state government for minorities and other weaker sections from earlier 21st January to 31 January. However the demand for increase in age limit was not conceded. A review meeting was held with chief secretary Dr. P K Mohanty in which officials of the corporations belonging to Minority welfare BC, SC, ST, Women and physically challenged attended the meeting. It must be recalled that the government by issuing GO Ms 101 on December 31 decided to release Rs. 1708 crore towards self employment scheme.

Nawaz Sharif in favour of testing dialogue option with Taliban

Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has said that the option of holding dialogue with Taliban to resolve issues at hand could prove to be the best strategy and hence should not be ruled out sans testing.

Sharif said that following the death of Pakistani Taliban Chief Hakimullah Mehsud in a drone attack, the dialogue process had come to a standstill, adding that such attacks must not be carried out on Pakistan’s soil as it breached the country’s sovereignty.

The man was administered a combination of drugs that have never been tried before in the United States.
