IT companies, HMDA join hands to clean up Hussain Sagar from Jan. 25

To keep Hussain Sagar lake clean and green, a group of IT companies in the State, in association with Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA), chalked out a plan to take up a Clean & Green drive at Banjara and Balkapur Nalas to protect Hussain Sagar Lake, which is the Pride of the City. Some 400 volunteers from IT companies, celebrities and colleges are going to participate in the program. The Banjara and Balkapur NGOs plan to kick off the Clean-up through a Solid Waste Management Awareness drive across a couple of Nala spaces on January 25.

Will go smiling: Sunanda tweeted

“joh hona hota hai woh hokay rahega. “Hastay huay jayengey (whatever is destined to happen will happen. Will go smiling)”, were the among the last tweets of Sunanda Pushkar, wife of Union Minister Shashi Tharoor, who was found dead in a five-star hotel room here tonight.

Sunanda spent the wee hours of today on micro-blogging site Twitter.

Her tweet at 5.27 AM said “a close frn of mine got, so made she did it but as v Hindus says joh hona hota hai woh hokay rahey ga.”

The BCCI today informed the Bombay High Court that it has paid all its dues to the government towards security cover provided by the police during the Indian Premier League (IPL) matches held in 2010-11.

A division bench of Justices S J Vazifdar and B P Colabawalla was hearing a public interest litigation filed by one Santosh Pachlag regarding non-payment of over Rs five crore to police for security provided for IPL matches played in Navi Mumbai’s D Y Patil stadium.

Nuke agency: Iran monitoring to cost USD 6 million

The UN nuclear agency estimates that monitoring Iran’s compliance with terms of the nuclear deal Tehran reached with six world powers will cost USD 6 million.

The figure is contained in a confidential report obtained yesterday by The Associated Press. It was prepared for a meeting Monday of the UN International Atomic Energy Agency’s 35-nation governing board, which is expected to approve the IAEA’s monitoring role.

The report says the IAEA can save minimal costs by reassigning some staff but most of the funding will have to come from contributions.

US ‘troubled’ by Myanmar unrest

The United States said today it was “deeply troubled” by a new wave of unrest in western Myanmar which has left several people dead, and warned security forces against “excessive force.”

“We are deeply troubled by reports of violence in the Rakhine state,” said State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki.

“We’re saddened to hear reports that several people have been killed, many injured, at least one missing and hundreds of civilians displaced in violence that included looting and destruction of homes and property.”

‘Obama not to pursue surveillance of dozen of world leaders’

US President Barack Obama has determined not to pursue surveillance of “dozens of world leaders”, whom a senior administration official today described as “friendly and allied nations”, stressing that this included primarily heads of states.

Though the list is expected to include leaders from countries like India, France, Germany and Britain, the official refrained from providing the list of the “dozens of countries”, whom the Obama Administration has determined be excluded from America’s controversial surveillance programme.

No US decision yet on Canada pipeline: Kerry

US Secretary of State John Kerry today refused to answer Canadian calls on whether or not Washington will approve the construction of a controversial oil pipeline, saying it was still under review.

“I can promise our friends in Canada that … All the appropriate effort has been put into trying to get this done effectively and rapidly,” Kerry said, ahead of talks with his Canadian counterpart John Baird.

US Secretary of State John Kerry will host Pakistan’s National Security and Foreign Affairs Advisor here on January 27 for the US-Pak strategic dialogue ministerial meeting.

“The United States and Pakistan are committed to continued cooperation between our governments and between the American and Pakistani people across a wide range of issues, which are in both our countries’ interests,” State Department Spokesperson Jen Psaki said today.

The strategic dialogue ministerial meeting, provides a platform for a focused discussion on core shared interests, she said.

Militants blow up gas pipeline in Egypt’s Sinai

A security official in Egypt says militants have blown up a natural gas pipeline in the Sinai Peninsula.

The official says a strong explosion rocked a village in central Sinai called el-Riysan today after militants planted explosives beneath the gas pipeline connected to cement factories in the area.

The official said there were no casualties. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to brief journalists.

Syria proposes Aleppo cease-fire, prisoner swap

Syria’s top diplomat said today his country is prepared to implement a cease-fire in the shattered city of Aleppo and exchange detainees with opposition forces as a confidence-building measure before a peace conference opens next week in Switzerland.

Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem told journalists about the cease-fire plan after meeting in Moscow with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov. He did not divulge details of the plan, which would contain “measures to enforce security” in Aleppo, Syria’s largest city.

Congress to move US court to dismiss lawsuit by Sikh body

India’s ruling Congress party will move a federal court here seeking dismissal of a human rights violation lawsuit against it by a Sikh rights group in connection with the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

The Congress party, through its attorney in the US, Ravi Batra will seek an order in March 2014 before District Judge Robert Sweet at the US District Court for the Southern District of New York to dismiss the lawsuit.

Lindsay Lohan clubbing, partying for moolah?

In her bid to stay clean and sober, troubled actress Lindsay Lohan has reportedly put herself up for hire to spend evenings in bars and nightclubs.

Tmz.com reports that Lohan has hooked up with some Londoners with connections to the city’s hottest clubs and other nightspots and they’ve negotiated deals for her to make money in appearance fees.

If reports are to be believed, Lohan has already made some appearances and more are scheduled. She’s charging in between $5K – $15K per appearance.

Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee mourns Suchitra’s death

Former West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee today expressed his condolences over the death of Suchitra Sen and said Bengali cinema would remain indebted to her for her contributions.

“She was a rare blend of personality and beauty and had a high place in Bengali cinema. She was a centre of attraction due to her acting skills for a long time. The Bengali cinema will remain indebted to her for ever. I deeply saddened by her death,” Bhattacharjee said in his condolence message.

An official spokesperson of Rashtrapati Bhavan said the President called Tharoor and conveyed his condolences.

Sunanda Pushkar, who was upset over an alleged extra-marital affair between her minister husband Shashi Tharoor and a Pakistani journalist, was found dead in a five-star hotel room which police suspect may be a case of suicide.

Sunanda death: Hotel staff quizzed, CCTV footage, call details

Police investigating Sunanda Pushkar’s death mysterious death tonight questioned a number of hotel staff and checked the CCTV fotage of the lobby of the third floor of the luxury hotel where she was staying.

Sources in police said call details record of Pushkar was also being checked as part of the probe into her death.

A team of Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) reached the hotel around 10:30 PM and immediately swung into action.

Will miss Jaipur Lit Fest due to wife’s illness: Tharoor tweet

In his last Twitter post for the day, Union Minister Shashi Tharoor said he would not be able to attend the Jaipur Literary Festival due to illness of his wife Sunanda Pushkar, who was found dead in a five-star hotel this evening.

“My wife’s illness means i need to be with her & will miss all 5 events of #JaipurLitFest 2014.” This was the last tweet posted by the Union Minister this evening.

Pushkar, who was upset over an alleged extra-marital affair between Tharoor and a Pakistani journalist, was found dead in a room in the Leela Palace hotel.

US urges UN force to go after Rwandan rebels in DR Congo

The United States today urged the UN mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo to “redouble its efforts” in the fight against Rwandan Hutu rebels in the restive east of the country.

US special envoy to Africa’s Great Lakes region, Russ Feingold, pointed to the success of Congolese troops backed by a UN intervention force in November in stopping the M23 rebel movement in eastern North Kivu province.

“The FDLR (Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda) need a similar end as the M23,” said Feingold in a telephone press briefing before leaving on a trip to the region.
